Great self observation: it’s much easier to focus on what other people are doing (or not doing), rather than to focus on what’s going on inside of us. This is the work of Compassionate Inquiry. “Wherever there is tension, so it requires attention.” So helpful! Thanks, Dr Maté.

I am eternally grateful to Dr Gabor Maté. Don't know how I'd missed this one; I thought I'd seen every video of him on YT. (Really striking to watch this during the pandemic...back when we could chat maskless and hug!) Shelly Prosko, that was a superb question. Absolutely love your energy.

So much like Hakomi therapy (Refined Hakomi therapy as taught by Ron Kurtz) and similar to IFS therapy work. Compassionate inquiry A non-patholigizing, somatically oriented healing modality that is about curiosity, compassion, etc - AND pays attention and is about 'being with' the client's internal state as well as the state of the facilitator/therapist. Being in 'loving presence' being the most important -- and how that also relates to clarity and opens up a space for acceptance and transformation, too. I also like this because it shows up with the hard working, articulate, wise man that Gabor Mate is -- with him smiling and sharing a hug, too! :))

Thanks for taking the time to watch this, Bettina! I think you've summarized and articulated the Compassionate Inquiry process very accurately and beautifully. I'm familiar with Hakomi and IFS (not in-depth, but have read about them very briefly) and they seem to be in line with Gabor's work indeed! I've heard Gabor reference Schwartz and IFS before. And I agree, I also appreciated and loved seeing/experiencing Gabor's joy, smiles and the hug!

Thanks for this. My teacher (yoga therapy) always talks about being curious, so the way Dr. Gabor explained it was very revealing and more understandable to me. She'll also often talk about taking a pause, stepping back, taking my a broader view. Softening my own gaze. And then how my effectiveness is about me as a practitioner being okay with where I'm at, so my presence can really 'be' with the person in front of me. And finally, talking about putting a person on the defensive. I know personally that my clarity gets clouded if that happens to me , so to think about it in terms of whom I"m with, really hit home. What a kind, thoughtful man....let alone, all his wonderful work. Currently reading his book, actually "When the Body Says No".

Hi Jody. Thanks for watching this WOW Chat. Like you, I see many parallels with Dr. Mate's approach and the 'process' approach we take when we use yoga as a therapeutic approach. Creating a safe space in the therapeutic environment and ensuring it is a partnership and process vs a 'prescription' approach is a very yogic model! I really enjoyed "When the Body Says No" and "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts." I agree, he is a compassionate, thoughtful and simply brilliant man :)

I learn something new each time I hear him speak. Thanks for watching this WOW Chat, Michele! Yes, please do check out some of my other ones. I have a compilation of them (about 20 so far)....I'm blessed to know and come across so many wise and compassionate people whose work is really in line with making this world a better place!
