I do not know of any parents that hope their child finds another parent, and comes home to declare, "I found new parents, you're out and they are in." Hence, where the words "until death us do part" comes into view. So I definitely agree we are monogamous creatures. I also do not know people that care more for the dog their neighbor owns than their own. I think many are confused with the word monogamy, we all seek it, whether it's our parents, our siblings, our pets, or our community. No one likes a cheating leader! As for a mate, oh yes, we do seek to find the "love of our life!" In fact we will leave a spouse if we should find them later! Driving us towards monogamy again!

That would be ideal as it was like that with divorces in the Middle East in the past before the much newer permanent divorce laws.

Since monogamy is a social construction, for the people who follow it, yes it's natural, doesn't mean also that polygamy is unnatural. I prefer to believe and follow monogamy since it's simpler and better in my opinion.

I think its a society problem, actually, not a gender one. I've observed similar problems in both men and women. Many people in general are simply selfish and have little compassion for others as long as they benefit themselves. I can't speak for other places but this does seem prominent in the US.

More specifically if you're into the MBTI 16 personalties types of data I am a ENTJ-P this would describe me probably flawlessly.

I have always wondered if humans were monogamous by nature. I do believe that we are, if you look at how humans and even apes have a stronge ties between a male and his favorite female, and vice versa, they stick together as long as possible, when all others leave because they form these intense emotional bonds. look how cave men lived, laws of ancient Egypt, Greece, Native Americans, Myans, the Chinese and even in ancient African and middle eastern cultures (where cheating spouses could be killed or lose limbs...even sultan had the men protecting the harem castrated to prevent emotions or sex between the help and the wives and even sultans could choose one wife or had a special favorite) , there were always laws about relationships, infidelity and marriages. Religions all over the world, have descriptions and explanations of relationships marriage and rules against infidelity. all Countries in modern times have laws, requirements and punishments, for marriages, infidelity and definitions of relationships and marriages, even tribes of people in Africa. these laws and religious descriptions didn't come from no where... laws and beliefs are driven by a common thinking of the general population of people in an area or country, since these laws and religious have been with humanity since the beginning and societies of people all over the world feel and think the same way about Monogamy ... it really is proof that monogamy and long life bonds are part of human nature...not just culture a society ...those are all actually formed by common human behavior.

we are semi- monogamous… this is evidenced by our the fact that a typical relationship involving a birth lasts on average of 4 years… just long enough to rear a child to an age appropriate for a single parent. not to mention true monogamy is one wife/sexual partner for life… also given the fact that we are more closely related to bonobos and chimps genetically speaking than the african elephant is to the indian elephant… and bonobos and chimps are not at all monogamous… I will have to disagree. your argument sucks.

Somehow I don't agree with Dr. Helen Fisher; she references things that are Biology and Medicine, so the studies, if they exist, would be in peer review journals. But there are no citations. She is a psychologist. A psychiatrist has a background in medicine, but a psychologist doesn't. Even a 1st year psychology student knows the four types she merely renamed Ptolemy's "choleric, sanguine, phlegmatic, and melancholy," I recognized them from the descriptions. Past behavior is always the best predictor of future behavior (from Psych. 101) So, I predict she will take basics of psychology and reinvent them so they make her sound far more qualified than she actually is. Or "once a liar then always a liar" as my Grandfather used to say. He said the same about deceivers too.
@OldToughDW
@OldToughDW 7 жыл бұрын
One correction she is a Biological Anthropologist, still not qualified as a doctor of medicine or a psychologist, but she talks about psychology and Endocrinology as if she is an expert and I still can't find the studies she supposedly used. My opinion of her just went down too. I surveyed Anthropology classes while in college and they have some really screwed up ideas and theories, which I think are based more in wishful thinking than science.

She's an biological anthropologist. Look at the right journals (for example Journal if Comparative Neurology, Journal of Forensic Sciences, Neuroendocronolgy Letters, Cerebrum etc. ) and read her six books. Lol. She's a researcher at the Kinsey Institute, Indiana University and a member of the center for human evolutionary studies at Rutgers University. Her colleague was Dr Lucy Brown. Together they put over 75 people into a brain scanner (fMRI), which back then was top of the notch science. She received her PhD in physical anthropology. Hence she has professional knowledge about brain chemistry and neurochemistry. Maybe you should look up physical anthropology instead of confusing it with anthropology. Boy, do your research before you start to complain about her being unscientific. Lol Shall I add that her publication about the fMRI scans was chosen as one of the best 100 academic articles of 2010…?

Well you're just avoiding the wrong kind of people. Notice I said "people" because, while important to who we are, there are women who would do the same, gender does not define us. Helen Fisher understands this. Now I would appreciate if you would refrain from these sexist remarks and attempting to negatively homogenize me based on my gender because some PEOPLE who happened to be male stick out in your mind as particularly corrupt. Bigotry is always bad, no matter what direction it's going in.

I think this kind of personality typology is too generalized. We have to consider that personality types evolve over time and adapt to situation and context which includes culture and societal pressures. Categorizing men into 4 general personality types is akin to astrology and that other 'personality typology' i.e. MBTI. would like to make you think it is that simple but humans are very complex. Personality does not remain the same, people learn, shape and reshape their personality accordingly. People would like to think they are XYZ personality because it is empowering and increases motivation. Personality research has been over this over a period of decades and it is still ongoing and most psychologists agree there is no typology but merely facets that might remain and/or change.

Some wit remarked once that "Marriage(monogamy?) is popular because it combines the maximum of temptation with the maximum of opportunity.". Social monogamy quickly loses its meaning, at least for women I've met, plus a few outliers who were honest enough to come clean with me, when they aren't getting their bells rung often and/or loud enough. The western divorce rate speaks for itself.

I don't know if she' right, but I think you have an opportunity to do something many women never consider. You could tell the man exactly how you feel, and let him tell you what he thinks, and how he feels about it. Maybe a director doesn't want to have to deal with another director? Also, agony203 is about 16 years old, so don't listen to him.
