Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show (shortened to Dr. Hook in 1975) was an American rock band, formed in Union City, New Jersey. They enjoyed considerable commercial success in the 1970s with hit singles including "Sylvia's Mother", "The Cover of 'Rolling Stone'" (both 1972), "Only Sixteen" (1975), "A Little Bit More" (1976), "Sharing the Night Together" (1978), "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman" (1979), "Better Love Next Time" (1979), and "Sexy Eyes" (1980). In addition to their own material, Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show performed songs written by the poet Shel Silverstein.
The band had eight years of regular chart hits in the United States, where their music was played on top-40, easy listening, and country music outlets, and throughout the English-speaking world including the UK, Canada and South Africa. Their music spanned several genres, mostly novelty songs and acoustic ballads in their early years, though their greatest success came with their later material, mostly consisting of disco-influenced soft rock, which the band recorded under the shortened name Dr. Hook.

Lyrics: Elvis he's a hero he's a superstar And I hear that Paul McCartney drives a Rolls Royce car And Dylan sings for millions And I just sing for free Oh everybody's makin' it big but me Oh, everybody's makin' it big but me Everybody's makin' it big but me Neil Diamond sings for diamonds And here's ole rhinestone me Oh everybody's makin' it big but me Well I hear that Alice Cooper's got a foxy chick To wipe off his snake, and keep him rich And Elton John's got two fine ladies And Doctor John's got three And I'm still seein' them same old sleezoes, that I used to see Oh, everybody's makin' it big but me Yeah everybody's makin' it big but me I've got charisma And personality Oh how come everybody's makin' it big but me? (What's wrong with that?) (I don't see nothing wrong with it Ray) Well I paint my face with glitter Just like Bowie does And I wear the same mascara That Mick Jagger does And I even put some lipstick on But that just hurt my dad and mom And everybody's makin' it big but me Oh, everybody's makin' it big but me Yeah everybody's makin' it big but me They got groupies for their bands And all I got is my right hand And everybody's makin' it big but me Everybody's makin' it, makin' it, makin' it Everybody's makin' it big...

James Gardiner ; at 55, brother, I have to agree. The vidoes are from before there was such a thing as "videos". This was all just called "footage". The behavior was not scripted-exactly the opposite. This sort of footage reminds me of old friends and when times were better.

What I enjoyed was how they all "Interacted" and EVERYONE got to "Make it BIG at the Mic" at least once..... They were a "BAND" and every member of it, got a piece of the action..... This song, just show's HOW THEY WERE...... ENJOYABLE.

As a member of the younger generation I wish more bands would act like this and not take themselves so seriously. I've been a fan of Dr. Hook for almost a decade now and they, almost more than anyone else I listen to, always put me in a great mood. I could tell they were having a ball doing this music, whether you thought it was good or not, and in the end that's what it's all about. Being selfless for your audience.

Billy Francis is the greatest, the look on his face before he takes over is priceless, The dance he does in the Yodel song is beyond comparison. The world needs more Billies then we may not take things so seriously.

@@barrymcnicholl4140 I'm not young enough to search long enough to find it so I'll just stick to the 70s. I'm still finding 70s gems that were completely buried by Lennon and McCartney, Zeppelin, Elton, Floyd, Rod, Seger, Skynyrd, EWF, ELO, Miss Linda, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Olivia, Doobies, Cars, Toto, the Who, Allmans, Simon, Frampton, Stones, Clapton, Charlie, Marshall, ZZ, Rush, Kansas, Heart, brother's Gibb, Wonder, Dylan, Straits, Ted, and on and on and on and on..........

@@feellucky271 well, there is a list of modern bands to prove that ongoing false argument " they don't make music like this anymore" very wrong: The Temples, Lemon Twigs, Yorick van Norden, Greta van Fleet, The Claypool Lennon Delirium, Mona Lisa Twins. In case you still haven't heard: radio and tv is not the stage where you find real modern talent anymore, you have to search Spotify, MySpace and KZbin. May take some more time, but the search will be rewarding, I promise.

This is such a fun song and funny to watch! Rik is sooo cute and this is the only video that I've seen him singing in so far. Such a funny ending with Billy taking over. lol Btw, Elton John was married for a few years in the 80's and yes, to a woman. :) He was saying he was bi- then decided he was really gay. Just a little info, 'cause of so many remarks about him! lol
