my 18 year old 20 lbs mutt had his 1st seizure last night. I was terrified. I held him in my arms the whole time not knowing what to do. I honestly thought he was dying in my arms. Now 16 hours later he's acting like nothing happened. He's my little fighter. I love him so much.

"Dogs can't swallow their tongue... neither do people" Thank you for saying that Dr. Jeff! To this day, so many people think you should try to grab someones tongue when they're having a seizure! STOP PEOPLE!! You'll end up hurting yourself and the person!

Aren't you supposed to make it so they don't bite their tongue

You do realize that there has been cases where people bit their tongues off during a seizure before, right?
@noneofyourbusiness9369
@noneofyourbusiness9369 5 ай бұрын
@@tobe3940Where did you hear that? Never in my 40 year's in the medical field have we ever had or heard of anyone biting their tongue off. That is a myth. Don't ever put anything in a person mouth that is having a seizure. Roll them to their side to help with their airway make sure to keep area clear so they can't be injured don't hold them down you can put something soft under the head and keep time of the beginning and end of seizure.

I walk a dog that has cancer and he has already surpassed his odds and has been doing really really good despite his prognosis. He hasn’t had one in a while but I want to make sure I’m prepared if he does have one while I’m watching him so he can be as safe as possible. Thanks for the info ! I hope I never need it !

I wrote down the important information in this video so that I (and other people) could have a concise list of things to do if this ever happens to your dog : 1) Make sure you don't put your hand in their mouth and don't let their mouth be anywhere near your hands, face, or you in general. This also means if you grab or move them, you don't do it by grabbing near the mouth and you don't do it with the mouth facing you. 2) If they are near a wall, stairs or furniture, get them away from there and make sure they have plenty of room not to hit anything. Do this by grabbing them by the hind legs or tail. 3) Make sure they are in a "sternum position" (belly down, not on their back). 4) Quiet the environment (turn off TV, music and lights if possible). 5) Put a blanket on their whole body (the weight helps to calm them and it also prevents stimuli). 6) If you have it, put an ice pack (or frozen bag of peas, or whatever does the job) on top of them, directly on their spine at the very end of the back near the tail. Cover them back up with the blanket and don't touch them anymore. 7) If they vomit, grab them by the lower belly and pull them up slightly so that the head is at an angle and the vomit can freely fall off so they don't choke on it. Don't go in their mouth to try and scoop it out and such. 8) If the dog is only having 1-2 seizure in a row, the previous steps should be enough (but once the seizure are over, you should probably plan a visit at the vet the make sure everything is fine). If the dog is having 3-4 or more seizure in a row, you should probably rush him to the vet so they can stop the seizures and help you.

Thank you for the informational video. My dog had 2 seizures 7 days ago and has been on medication since that time and has been seizure free. I am looking forward to the future for references and I found your video helpful for the most part. My GSD had her first seizure while sleeping upside down with her legs in the air. She is 80 pound and has done this for years... I freaked out and thought she was dying when it happened. Luckily my son came when I started screaming at 5am. He placed her on her side and just held her tightly until she calmed down and came out of it. He then carried all 80 pounds of her outside and loaded her in the truck and we immediately went to the vet. Long story short... because it was a long story... we experienced a second seizure... this one on her side and it didn't last as long. Honestly the medication has helped but it has also come with some serious side effects... which are difficult for a 80 pound GSD and a human loved one. Watch my daily videos if you are interested. If I had CBD oil or alternatives I would consider them but at this point we are past the worst with the meds and we are just waiting and hoping the next one isn't so bad. Day 7 complete for us. Seizures are so scary! PS... My vet recommended an ice pack on her head because that is where the neurons are causing the seizure. I know this vet was all about safety to human, but if you can during safely or afterwards. Anyway... thanks for the post and to anyone reading my long story... #dogslife

Very Helpful. Thank You for the info. My 4 yo Shih Tzu had a small seizure tonight. She's had this happen once before in exactly the same setting. She'll be fast asleep when I come home and when she wakes up all excited to greet me she seizes. She's never fully flopped over or lost full mobility like I've seen in other dogs, but she does paddle her paws, shakes, and looks, dazed, then is a bit wobbly after she comes to. I'm taking her the Vet first thing in the morning. I've seen much worse seizures in dogs who much older, but I've never had a dog so young have a seizure.

Thank you so much Dr. Jeff for this video on managing dogs experiencing seizures. This video really helped me a lot in taking of my favorite dog Chuchay.. I've spent sleepless nights since she had her seizure last August 11. She is only 6 months old.. I think she was exposed to a poison or insecticide somewhere dumped by the neighborhood. With your video I was able to managed how to control the attacked. I will be taking her to the vet tomorrow since she experiences 3 to 4 seizures a day.. Thank you so much.. This really is a big big help.. God bless you doc Jeff!!!

My dog has maybe one a year, and only one. But I can see I've done a number of things wrong. I left the TV playing instead of quieting the area. I turned on the lights instead of darkening his world. and I put my head on his neck and arm around him trying to comfort him. Now in the past 5 years he's had like 1 a year, and he's never bitten or even lashed out at me, but I can see where thing could get worse. My moose is a pit/boxer mix, and like 105lbs, so he really could hurt me not meaning to. Thanks for the video. I learned something.

side note: oddly enough the mother of the dog that had the seizure began to bundle her up in a blanket the sat right up against her (not on top) but just enough to cover her ears and eyes. She had blankets shoved all around her from my bed. I love animals and I believe the mother knew even better than I as to what to do. Then I watched this and realized she did everything you said and all I had to do was turn down the lights and computer and she was fine. God bless you for this information.

@@MaMaTArtlife next time just take him to the nearest vet. If he needs to be sent to another location they should tell you there. You just need it to stop, in my opinion, as long as it's stopped and the animal is okay, that's all that matters. Hope your dog's doing good!

Massage your pet while they have the seizure. It will “cut down the length” of the seizure. Also it is calming for the dog. Massage around their neck, shoulders the most and down their back. It’s worked the most for my family. We have had two dogs now over the years with seizures.

My dog has epilepsy. She gets very scared when having a seizure (understandably), and needs comfort like being held, and kept cool. ( I use a small fan, and use a wet cold rag to wet her ears and belly. ) if I left her in the floor like this she’d hurt herself to find me and would be in a lot more stress. I know my dog and her seizures, and I honestly wouldn’t care to be bit while comforting her. She jerks and convulses, but never bites. I think you’d have to know how your dog to know what works for them.

My beagle has them maybe once or twice a month. The vet said they had no idea what it could be as her vitals and bloodwork were normal. They figured epilepsy but said medication may or may not help since they weren't certain. She didn't start having seizures until she was a couple of years old. From her only litter, we were told one of the puppies had seizures pretty early on though and is now on meds. Dr said that is probably the best indication its epilepsy in her since it was passed down.

I do have a question. with the ice pack on the back - you said the sternum position......my dog is 117 pounds, strong and stronger during seizures and he never is in any other position than on his side during one. My dog just had his first seizure. At first I thought his legs weren’t working and he was just flipping around to try and get up. He’s a little old shih tzu and I love him so so much 😢 (Edit) he seems to be okay now ❤️❤️❤️

Wished I'd seen this video before my dogs first (and so far only) seizure :'D Bit both my thumbs almost to the bone and one of my fingernails right in half. Now I know to stay away from the mouth, thanks for the tips, I hope I'll never need them!

My silver lab got ahold of beer a year or two ago and as he walked into my room he was walking crooked and failed to jump on my bed. He eventually got onto my bed and just fell over and started seizing. I yelled for my step mum and we tried to calm him down and after a few minutes it finally stopped. It was terrifying and gladly he hasn't had one since but now i know the warnings beforehand.

Hi Dr. Jeff, I recently adopted a 3 yr old Brussels from a rescue who was sort of feral with seizure disorder. We have her on pheno and Zonisamide. She is only 9lbs and has break through seizures since I adopted her July 2019. She has a seizure every 2 weeks, 20 seconds or so. Twice 2 seizures in a 24 hr period. Her blood work is fine, liver ect. I just was given liquid Keppra med to top off on her other meds. I just wonder what you think. I find the phenobarb so sedating, she's a young pup. The seizures are upsetting of course but Bella pup bounces back. I do the cool pack on her belly and a bit of vanilla ice cream and it helps her get back to normal really quickly. Let me know if you have any advice. I really appreciate it :)

My dog, a 8 year old mutt just had one, it's the second time Ive witnessed and it wasn't any less frighting than the last time it happened months ago. He didn't snap or growl, he just shakes a lot and foams a little, eyes down turned. Didn't last more than about 3 or 4 minutes, with the disorientation period accounted for, thankfully. Like last time there wasn't much more I could do than petting him and try to sooth him through it, so when it was done I googled for more information, to see if there was anything else I could and came across this video. Thank you very much for the information, if it happens next time, I'll be a little better prepared.

I Have to disagree with one of the points made only because it can be dangerous for your dog. Do NOT put a blanket on your dog! The reason I say this is because during a seizure your dogs temperature is elevated and you do not want to raise it more. In fact you should do things to help keep their body temperature from rising. It was suggested by my vet to have a fan blowing on her. In addition to the ice pack on the spine, I also put one on the top of her head.

I agree. A dog can get overheated if it has continuous seizures. Instead of putting a blanket on the dog in that case, you should be on your way to the hospital.

my dog will run to me right before she has a seizure and during the seizure she will pee and puke, and with the extreme seizures she will poop as well it usually helps her calm down to have her head on my shoulder

I tooked him out of kennel, and wrapped him in a towel. I was so scared, that he going to die. He is only 4 pounds. Well thank goodness everything was okay.

Thank you so much for posting this. I don't know if my dog is having seizures or not. She has Cushing's and last night started shaking her head for 5-10 seconds. She later did it again for 20 seconds and then repeated it for 20 seconds today. It's just her head shaking rhythmically, not the whole body. My vet is out for a couple days. Don't know what to think but I'm glad to have the advice in this video.

I wish I could watch this video before , today morning at around 3:30 am I lost my pup because of seizures, two days ago I went to veterian but Doctors was not able to identify the disease , he said temperature is low so I have to keep my pup warm and should massage her when she shiveers and foaming. I did a very big mistake by making my pup warm , I love her very much and miss her very badly, she was a very cute pup used to play with me always.

this actually is very important. I never knew that... (I would coddle my pup before he passed, never was bitten. but there way a huge chance I couldve been) but me not knowing. thats all I knew. hold him, pet him. and talk to him... (the vet thinks he was abused before we had him, we got to deal with the aftermath) poor Rexaroni

The oldest chihuahua started having seizures a couple months ago. I honestly thought that he was injured at first. His first one he started out falling over then he would stiffen and start screaming like he was being killed. His seizures seem to be triggered when he gets overly excited. (I'm suspicious that a flea med given 1 time last year, started them, but there's no proof. Just suspicions.) To be honest all of us have picked him up every time he has had a seizure and once he's against us his screaming stops shortly and he snaps out of it quickly. He has started to walk to us to lay down near us now right before he has one. I wouldn't pick him up if he was exhibiting any teeth grinding or some of the other behaviors during seizures I've seen some dogs do on KZbin btw! Ace Academy definitely has the protect yourself thing spot on!!!!!! The dogs have absolutely NO idea what's going on for a while! I just wanted to share this. Our poor little guy has one or two every month now. They never last more then a few minutes but his recovery time varies. After he suddenly relaxes when the seizure is done, it can take up to 10 min to have him fully aware and back to normal.

I have a chihuahua that has had seizures since she was three months she is 9 years old now she use to be on phenobarbital till this Nov when we moved out of the state we heard we could taper her off of the pheno with peanut butter and honey it worked her seizures have lessened and now when she has one we put her in a cooler place and she seems to come out of it within mins it use to be multiple seizures and sometimes last hours. not sure why it is working but it does. Also read that taking her off the pheno would help with her kidney issues she use to urinate all the time even after coming in from outside she would go again. Now tonight my Maltese who never has had a seizure seems to be having tremors she is 3 and has always been active and healthy my husband threw some old bread out to feed the birds it was an everything Italian loaf could that have caused her to have a stomach ache or any damage he did pick it up but she may have eaten a slice it has seeds on the edge like a everything bagel I am very sorry about this being so long but we just moved here and have not established a new vet we are both still looking for jobs. she just seems off tonite and I am really worried.

My 13 year old Maltese just got done with her second seizure and her life about 10 minutes ago. I'm glad I look this up. I took her to the vet immediately after the first time, but they didn't know exactly what it was because it could have been three things. I don't have the money really right now to get her a cat-scan and x-rays as he suggested. I'm going to save up as much as I can and get everything she needs, my dog though doesn't go flat on your stomach during a seizure, she falls on her side and bends backwards to where her head almost touches her tail and screams. It all starts with a cough, then she acts like she can't breathe and then collapses and has a seizure. It happens when she's way too excited after I come home. It hurts so much to see her suffer
