@@SoulFaeWorld it was all so sudden too. I left for work Saturday and he seemed ok, Saturday night he was kinda lazy, didn't want to leave my side or the bed which wasn't typical. Sunday he was resting on my bed until early Sunday afternoon he had his 1st of 4 seizures. I would have loved to have known what was going on with him but I couldn't afford to have them keep him overnight and do a bunch of tests. He was 12, soon to be 13 so his quality of life even on medication probably wouldn't have been great.

Where as kids will be exhausted and sleep following seizure, a dog will often pace around and be starving, even if they just ate. But I couldn't assign any patho I have learned to how melatonin inhibits seizure activity. But our vet said try it can't hurt as all the antiepileptics were failing my boy. My cavalier is in the hospital tonight after a long seizure quite nasty. She had one in July a mild one looked more like a simple family which she recovered from within a few minutes (she's 7 year old CKCS). The vet at tye time could fund nothing wrong with the heart or neuro obs or bloods so was put down to a one off seizure (very hot day so he thought it may have been a simple faint). However this eve out of the blue she had a mild seizure v similar and recovered within a minute however that was followed within 20 mins by a traditional seizure jaw clenching foaming at mouth limbs paddling etc. It was terrifying. O brought her straight to emergency vet who at first wasn't sure if she'd had a strike or not her body temp was gone very low for some reason he can't understand. Rang him an hour ago and she's improved and is now standing by herself but she had another seizure shortly after I left the hospital he had to give her valium. He's not her regular vet they are closed on weekends. Provided she recovers fro this with no brain damage its looking like we have to consider epilepsy. Other than that she's in good health but she was diagnosed as being a Carrier of the gene for EFS which my vet says means she shouldn't develop symptoms but I've spoken to other owners online who say they had identical diagnosis and that it DOES seem to affect them regardless if they are only carriers. Such with worry

Thank you for the video. I went to many vets and all missed what was causing my dog's seizures. It was her dog food. Most vets fail to do a diet consult and it's where things should start because the processed pet food is killing our pets slowly. I will be doing a video to tell my story.

Thank you so much, Doc, for the clear and thorough explanation. You don't know how much your videos mean a lot to us who live overseas with no specialist in the country. We are located in the Philippines and our doctors here have limited time explaining our dogs' test results. My 16 and half Japanese Spitz mix male intact dog (please don't judge, neutering is not common where we live) had his second seizure this year, this one took two hours continued seizure (he was responsive to my voice and very aware while he was having a seizure, teeth clenching, front limb paddling) until we reached the nearest emergency vet. We had just been to our regular vet a few hours before it happened. Our regular vet says he has low phosporous which is causing the seizure, and this was due to the ceistine stones (not blocked), and his platelet was borderline low also. All other blood and imaging tests came back normal (no head tumor showing in the xray, heart normal size, only mild arthritis on his left hind). The ER vet injected a strong sedative for the seizure which he responded well. We went home and the next day he was fine. But on the third day, he showed signs of vestibular disease (nystagmus, falling over, left head tilt and left head lameness and left paw knuckling). My question is, how is a seizure and signs of vestibular disease related? Can a dog have with a normal blood test results (except for the phosporous) have an inner ear infection? The ER vet thinks our regular vet might have been looking at the wrong direction (too much focus on the stones) despite the monthly follow up checkups we proactively do. I'm at loss I don't know how to proceed. He is walking again now with a head tilt but othewise normal and back in his happy self. Please help me, Doc. Thank you for your time.

@@Gabeerojas Poor Mina! We visited with the neurologist at the end of October. They have diagnosed Pickles with myoclonic seizures. Thankfully the vet was honest and said that an MRI would be wasteful as it wouldn't give us anymore answers - so we saved money. We have upped Pickles Kepra dosage and continue to give her Phenobarbital. At the recommendation of the neurologist we also started an antianxiety medication as stress and anxiety can cause the seizures to happen. Our goal is no more than 1 seizure every 3 months - this felt like a huge tasks since Pickles was having several seizures a week. Happy to report that since 10/28 she has only had 1 seizure :) I do hope that Mina continues to improve.

I am not afraid, embarrassed, or worried about what others say or think about me. @@jbart1985 thank you so much for asking ✨ unfortunately she passed away last March. The vet explained to us that one of the causes could’ve been that while going through surgery for a cyst removal on her bum and a few others on her back, her blood pressure dropped and stayed low for too long - causing her to have seizures. But one day she got one after the other every few minutes until we had to take the saddest decision ever; the vet didn’t think she was going to get better after that. It was the hardest thing in this world and we miss her every single day. I truly wish that you find an effective way to manage and reverse what your puppy is going through ✨

The biggest reason is flea meds? They cause these! Especially the ones in the isoxazoline class such as Bravecto, Credelio, Nexgard and Simparica. STOP poisoning your dogs if you are using toxic flea treatments! Sue these companies! MANY VETS KNOW THIS TOO, yet they keep Pushing these drugs because they make a lot of money pushing drugs including vaccines! DVM should be removed from their names when they practice this way! Also, I’m a breeder and only feed RAW diet, NO vaccines before 12-16 weeks especially for small breeds. Processed foods are causing your dog a LOT of harm just like processed foods in people!

Oh damn. This is an old video. I will post anyway. I really appreciate the way you broke things down and explained it all. My dog was roughly 3-5 years old when she began having them. I am not sure of her age but she was fairly young when I adopted her. I took her to an emergency Vet (always happens on the weekend) and he put her on Gabapentin and Keppra. She's been taking these drugs for 5 years now. Maybe a little less than that. On those meds, she would go about 3 months between seizures. The longest she has gone was 7 months or something astonishing, but then they started coming with a vengeance. Now her seizures are coming literally every 3 weeks and 2 or 3 days. She had 2 in the same day the last time and we increased her dosages of both drugs and increased the frequency to every 8 hours. Now today she had another one, 3 weeks and 3 days from the last one. Putting her on much higher doses and more often has done absolutely nothing. How hard would it be to take her off these two meds and put her on something else like Phenobarbitol? I am going to take her back in to see the Vet as early in the week as I can but until then, I'm going to keep her close to me cause at this point, anything could happen. I just want to be the best mom I can be. This breaks my heart. It takes her longer to come out of the fog these days too. I'm afraid of the damage that is happening to her as a result of the seizures. She's too sweet and too lovable to live like this.

I had a pup with seizures. To anyone else going through it, remember they aren't in as much pain about it as you are. Also, nothing worked better to alleviate his pain and stress, than CBD oil. I got one specifically for dogs, and that worked miracles. It was a 20$ bottle. Lasted a long time, at some point he went from 2-3 seizures a month with up to 12 (some days multiple), to not having any for 5 months, my CBD oil for him ran out, and I didn't think to get it since I was broke, and he wasn't needing it. Then one day I was at work and he had 3, left early and within 12 hours he had passed away. My biggest regret is nit having that on hand for him, it might not have prevented what happened. But it would have made it a lot easier on both of us. But he was well loved, and cared for, and was the happiest boy possible. He had a whole lifetime of joy in his 3.5 years of life. We went from averaging a few a month to only 1 in over 2 years. It took 5 years since her first before I finally pinpointed the cause: trauma. Tara went nearly a year without a seizure on KBr until she was attacked at a dog park and had one that night. They've always been in her sleep, never once while awake. They started almost directly after a traumatic event 5 years ago. I can only figure that she's having bad nightmares that are jerking her awake and causing the neurological issue to trigger.

Great job staying calm. That can be really hard to do. It certainly could be idiopathic epilepsy but there are other causes. Since she’s only had two, may not need to start medications yet, but if there is a third seizure, should consider tests and medications.

I have a husky with epilepsy. Today he had 5 between 6 am and 9 am. Last Sunday he had 1 mild seizure. Sometimes he has them 1 or 2 days a week and sometimes they can be 2 to 3 weeks apart. He is on two medecations, phenobarbital 2 pills twice daily and levetiracetam 1 pill twice daily. I have taken him to my vet many times but not to a neurologist yet. My vet said that whatever is found wouldn't change the treatment. He thinks it might be a slow growing tumor based on his behavior after a seizure. I'm praying that isn't the case. I'm trying to save the money to afford a neurologist to find out for sure. Prayers are needed.

We can only assume he was allergic to the cat although the vet said she had never come across it before and we didn’t put 2 and 2 together before that. The cat used to sleep with the dog they used to get on very well. He is now 12 years old and hasn’t had a seizure for 8 1/2 years

My 15 yr old shih-poo has started having seizures and I currently can’t afford to take her to a neurologist. Her initial labs revealed thyroid and liver issues. After thyroid med and liver supplements for a month, those labs were almost back to normal but she’s still having seizures. So we went on to X-rays and they were also good. So now she’s on seizure med 3 x daily and at first it seemed to be helping but she’s still having mini ones. At least now she’s not always losing bladder and bowel control but this week it has happened maybe 4 days in a row. Probably less than 30 seconds. Between them she’s eating normally generally seems “ok” but her personality has changed and I’m worried her brain is being damaged even though they are short seizures. They’ve never been more than 1-2 minutes that we’ve seen and now they can even be just 10-15 seconds. But last night she had a 10 second one then when I got her outside to pee she had another one maybe 5 minutes later and just flopped over on the ground and laid there several minutes. Usually she hops back up. The seizure was still maybe only 1-2 minutes but she didn’t get up for several more minutes until I finally just stood her up. Then she just walked around like normal and did her business. I am not sure what to do next. But it seems like slowly her “primitive” brain is taking over. She’s always been like a “vacuum cleaner” and had to be watched very closely and the environment controlled because she will eat almost anything on the ground or within reach. Now that seems even worse and she doesn’t listen to me at all anymore when I tell her no. Like she’s living just to eat whether it be her food, or carpet fuzz or scraps of paper or rabbit poo or twigs and leaves. I have to put my hand under her mouth and literally physically lift her head to make her stop trying to eat the ground whenever she goes out to potty. She’s almost died 3 separate times in prior years from eating bad things… it’s starting to feel like maybe it’s the end of the road at 15 and if so my mentally ill daughter is going to be devastated. Our bichon made it to 16. I also don’t want her to suffer. Idk if anyone will ever see this but it helped a little just to get it out. I wish labs could tell us if she has a brain tumor.

Dog food is only one reason! I’m a breeder and only feed RAW diet, NO vaccines before 12-16 weeks especially for small breeds. Also, The biggest reason is flea meds? They cause these! Especially the ones in the isoxazoline class such as Bravecto, Credelio, Nexgard and Simparica. STOP poisoning your dogs if you are using toxic flea treatments! Sue these companies! VETS KNOW THIS TOO, yet they keep Pushing these drugs because they make loads of money off pushing these drugs! DVM should be removed from their names when they practice this way!

My 7 month old Rottweiler passed away last night. She had cluster seizures once two months ago but she did have a foreign material and was thought at that time it was due to the foreign material because she stopped once removed. She did fine after that blood work always normal and she was a completely normal pup. Then yesterday suddenly she had another group of cluster seizures 6 by the time we got her to the vet. We did X-rays and blood work everything was clear nothing alarming as to what was causing it but she did aspirate during her seizures. She was then given a propofol drip to help control the seizures as she had about 12 already. Unfortunately she passed away. We are devastated we don’t know if there’s something we did wrong or was this something genetic that we couldn’t control. We just recently lost our first Rottie back in March due to cancer and then we got our little pup after and now we lost her also. We are at a loss for words and just wish we can have some answers to give us peace.

My 15 yo puggle just started having seizures recently. He's had two grand mals, both lasting about 5 minutes. One on 7/21 and one last night on 7/31. Both happened around the same time, 11:30pm, while he and we were asleep. The first one we rushed him to the emergency vet. They did bloodwork. Liver and kidney enzymes were a little elevated but nothing indicating it was the cause of the seizure. Last night same thing. He takes about 3 hours to calm down from them and go back to sleep. Temporary blindness, panting, pacing, disorientation. It's so heartbreaking for us. He's an old dog so getting an MRI is out of the question. Even if he has a brain tumor, there's nothing we can do to help him at this age. I am wondering if we should get him on anti-seizure meds if this continues to go on. He also developed EPI a few years ago. Before he hit 13 he was the healthiest dog ever.

How is your doggie doing? Our Whippet started having seizures about 6 months ago, and is on meds but not doing so well. Bloods ruled out external factors but maybe she has something inside the brain. It costs too much to get the MRI at the moment but it's the only way to really know. She has signs of deteriorated brain function between seizures and averages about 1 seizure per week (less than 3 mins), yesterday she had 3 seizures within 48hrs. She also takes 3-4 hours of hyperactivity, running around, banging into things - either after a seizure or exactly 3 hours after her evening medication - so sad to see our animal babies suffering.

@@nzcatz760 He's had several more seizures. The last two were a week apart. He's on gabapentin now but it doesn't seem to help. My vet said it's not worth it to do the MRI because he's 15 and even if they found a tumor, what are they going to do? The post-ictal stage is the worst, as you know, because they just go crazy for hours afterward. Especially when it happens at night, then we're up till like 3 or 4 in the morning with him. I think he also has some doggie dementia, so it has to be just brain deterioration. He's had personality changes and pants all the time, as well as some accidents in the house now. My 17yo diabetic Dachshund had one and her gums where cold. I could not check BG as they have discontinued the alpha Trak2 been trying to get the strips. I have one arriving tomorrow as explained the situation there is a shortage in Australia they are all on back order. Her bloods and biochemistry is good following the seizure. I put glucose on her gums when it passed as my first thought was not an hypo due to how full on it was with the mouth chomping. It is common for cold gums with a seizure? It went for less than 3 mins. She gets active at night I’ve noticed so I check bg until I ran out the week of the seizure as low bg can be tricky to see with her sometimes. She is vision and hearing impaired. Not related to diabetes she has had cataract surgery, gunderson flap, and one eye removed some of her eye surgeries since 2017. Slow loss of hearing over 3 years. I thought maybe dementia as when I’d check her BG when she was up and active at night it was fine. But the sezuire if not BG has thrown me. She has been diabetic for 9 years and not being able to check her BG at the time as not helped, I rubbed glucose her her gums of course but with her age I wonder what your thoughts are? She has grade 2 heart murmur no tx needed atm. Full pet insurance and a great team of eye specialists, heart and diabetic vets, and will do MRI if needed but she had her eye out in May we use an anethesthologt if now. But due to age and comorbities the vet and I don’t want to put her under unless it’s necessary. Already 3 GAs this year which is about standard for her. Sorry for the waffling just wondering if cold gums common in all sezuires or more related to BG? I really appreciate your video and I feel so stupid not being able to check her BG as it would of save me a lot of panic.

Thank you, this was extremely informative, and I greatly appreciate it! My 4 yr old boxer just had her first seizure early this morning. My son was screaming, and I found her laying on her side looking like she was trying to run, and urinating! It lasted for maybe 15 seconds, and she just laid there. My son said he started screaming for me when she fell over, so I’m guessing it was a minute in total. My vet told me not to do it in the future, but I immediately picked her up, to carry her downstairs. What’s crazy, after laying her back down, she immediately jumped up and became playfully excited, with each of us standing around her. I’m sure it’s all in my mind, but if felt like she was trying to calm us all down, because she could see ppl crying. Definitely not me, I wasn’t crying, lol! I made an appt to have her seen by her vet, what a scary and freaky morning! Thanks again for your video, you really did a great job breaking it down.

Our English Springer Spaniel started his seizures in February and since then he's on meds. We have not found the cause yet, we've done a brain scan and there was nothing to spot. At first we thought it was due to some home stress but that we laid attention towards since then to go outside when there a "discussion", he's sensitive, even when there is for example a soccer match playing. As i'm writing this comment he's had 2 attacks this weekend. He's doing another cluster. His last electrolyte checkup were normal levels and his blood is good. I'm considering the possibility that it is due to some kind of infection or worm even though i'm sure he has had his deworming pill. He sometimes eats grass and he did a diarhee poop after his last attack. I've noticed when he lays next to me, i can hear "a toilet flush" so i'm wondering if there is gastrointestinal cause to this.

And his dog food also changed to some derm defense dog food, I also will give him some chicken fillet every meals . I am not sure whether the treatment of his skin problems cause seizure or there is some brain problems cause his skin problems! In Jan, the first time of seizure happened for 2 mins and he was incontinence, after 3 hours, seizure happened again for 1 mins. Then we take him to hospital immediately, they help him to do blood test, only find out he has a little bit low blood sugar but they said this will not cause seizure. Then they said may due to brain tumour or infection of nerves, but doing the test needed anesthesia. Due to his old age, we have not do the test. We think even find out he has tumour, he is too old to take surgery. We are now giving him oral medication every day twice. Yesterday, seizure happened again for 1 min. I am so scare now the oral medication cannot control his seizure. What can I do now?

My dog had his first seizure at 5 yo.. some weeks later, my other dog (he's son of the first one) had his first seizure, at age of 3. They are both male, Brazilian Terriers. I go running with them since they were young (about 1yo), in average a distance of a 4 miles (maximal 6 miles), at most frequently 3 times a week.. We always make a pause halfway and I release them for some minutes... They never seemed exhausted and they keep the whole way heading the way and pulling their leashes. Now I don't now if all this exercise may have cause their seizures. I can't find a reliable reference about it.. and whether I can keep on exercising them or not. Some discourage, some say it's good for their health...

How are you two dogs getting on a year later? Were you able to determine if the exercise was affecting seizures? Are they still having seizures? My whippet-cross started seizures about 6months ago.

@@nzcatz760 The dad dog hasn't had another seizure, as far as I know. The son dog has had a couple seizures since then, being two within two months in the middle of 2021, reason why I took him to the veterinary neurologist. Due to the second event within three months, we were prescribed daily dosis of phenobarbital. I purchased the medicine, I ended up giving my dog another chance though. In the last 12 months he had two seizures, the last one in May, as of the seizure log I'm keeping uptodate. About the exercises, we have been going running much less often and for shorter distances (not more than 3 mi) than back then. The dad one's got chubby ^.^

@@nzcatz760 I forgot to mention, the neurologist didn't believe that a possibly too much exercising would be the cause for the seizures. He was rather supportive of keeping on running with them.

Sanderlin Productions Yes, sometimes we see pets that have reactive seizures. Most of the time dogs have seizures when they are quiet/sleeping/resting. Occasionally we see dogs that have seizures after activity, or in response to lights or sounds. Some are very specific - I’ve examined a couple dogs that only had seizures if paper was krinkled. I’ve also examined dogs that only have seizures if they come to the vet!

@@SEVNeurology This is exactly what my 11 year old chocolate lab has started doing about 5 months ago. She has facial twitching, mouth smacking, eye blinking, ears twitching. Subtle at 1st, didn't know if that was what it was until really pd attn. Its only when krinkling bags, like a shredded cheese bag, her treat bag, my salad bag, or if she is for a little taste of what Im eating, at times. I held an apple down for her to eat and it happened. Opening the back door that is metal does it too. Interesting that its always her anticipation of food of noise by her head. I am taking her to my vet after I gather a little more information, very soon! She is my world, so will do whatever it takes to understand why, if possible. Thanks for the video.

Thank you so much for creating this very informative video. I have a six year old female pitbull that had her first seizure in May 2017 since then she had a total of seven all less than four mins. Then out of then blue Saturday she seized for nearly 45 mins on/off, we believe it was 16/17 seizures. Took her to the EV but she stopped seizing before we got there. Vet advised we get bloodwork done ASAP but he also labeled her as epileptic without bloodwork, is that just a catch all diagnosis? Also she typically vomits before seizing is this a common association or do you think it’s unrelated? Trying to find the most qualified vet that will make every effort to diagnose her without bankrupting us. We love our dogs, but on a budget ;)
@SEVNeurology

onenicnac7 Likely idiopathic epilepsy, but only way to truly diagnose is through ruling out other causes. Yes, occasionally dogs will vomit before a seizure. Not often, but occasional.

The biggest reason is flea meds? They cause these! Especially the ones in the isoxazoline class such as Bravecto, Credelio, Nexgard and Simparica. STOP poisoning your dogs if you are using toxic flea treatments! Sue these companies! VETS KNOW THIS TOO, yet they keep Pushing these drugs because they make loads of money off pushing these drugs! DVM should be removed from their names when they practice this way! Also, I’m a breeder and only feed RAW diet, NO vaccines before 12-16 weeks especially for small breeds. Processed foods are causing your dog a LOT of harm just like processed foods in people!

Cayenne Pepper is a vasodilator and stops these seizures. Dab it on the gum and count to 3. Seizure over. Too simple and the quicker the seizure stops the better for the dog.

I have a 2 yr old American bully that recently started to have seizures. He is currently on the Keppra and phenobarbital. He started to seize today. Putting him to sleep is now coming up for discussion because of the costly emergency visits. After doing research online and with my dog only being 2, I don’t want to put him to sleep because he seems fine after he seizes.. but I also don’t want him to be suffering.

How did you get in with your dog? We are struggling with the same decisions around how much to treat him, the costs and on-going quality of life for the dog and also for us as a family having to manage a dog with regular seizures. It's a tough road and choices difficult.

@@nzcatz760 We ended up making the hardest decision of our lives.. Im sorry you have to deal with it as well.. In my opinion on how to go about this type of situation is if the episodes are just starting see how the first couple treatments go.. if it becomes too costly or you notice ur loved one still having the seizures or their condition becomes more often or even noticing a change in behavior after the episode then that’s when I would think about that tough choice, Seeing them suffer while still being on the meds really put a toll on me because I wanted to do more to help.. i hope this helped you & god bless

Yes, if she has had seizures since 3 months of age, idiopathic epilepsy is less likely. Tests (blood tests, bile acids testing for liver shunt, MRI, spinal tap, and possibly infectious disease testing).

Idiopathic is NOT IMPOSSIBLE WITH YOUNG DOGS!! Our boy (pug)started at 2-3 months old and he is now 15 months. The situation evolves and alternates between being sporadic and chronic. Currently hospitalized and starting 4th medication (KBr). We've also tried pulse therapy with Chlorazepate. He has confirmed refractory idiopathic epilepsy (rule out diagnosis via metabolic testing, MRI, CSF tap). We were always td it was very unlikely to be this but that is the way it worked out. Unfortunately he is a more severe case, and we are trying our best. I hope your pet is doing well, and that things begin to get better for all do our little friends. Best, Joey

I think my dog had just her first seizure 3 hours ago for 5 to 10 secs. I'm not sure cause she was just lying on her tummy, she suddenly wants to get up then that's when it started. She's on medication for blood parasitism(anaplasmosis) right now. She also had nexgard which is an anti-tick 4 days ago. I don't know if it is because of her medicines. 😭

If you think or know that you have lead based paint in your home or apartment, this might be causing your animals seizures. My first chihuahua had seizures. They started when I moved into an apartment that had lead based paint (before that, she was fine) and then when we moved, they stopped. Just a suggestion if there is a way to check your animals lead levels. I didn't think of this until after she died. Maybe her lead levels were high. Just a theory - it couldn't hurt to check.

Yes, lead toxicity is a possible cause of seizures. Lead-based paints are really, really uncommon these days. It’s something we ask about, but really uncommon.
