*"Rule 12 - Pet a cat when you encounter one on the street"* This one really hit me in the strangest way. I recently lost my best friend, my dog, and I was absolutely heartbroken because of it. One day I was walking aimlessly in the streets, like I many times did with my dog, when a random cat caught my gaze and came towards me. The only thing that I could do was the most obvious one: I petted it. After a few minutes, we both went our way. I don't know how or why that happened, but it truly was like a ray of light piercing through the dark clouds of my mind. It made me realize that, despite death and sadness, life can still go on and offer moments of shining beauty.

*Rule 08 - Tell The Truth* -- I've been doing that for so many years. Not a single lie. I don't go out telling other people what I think of them, that is being rude. I answer SPECIFICALLY what they asked for, not more, not less. If for some reason I don't want to answer the question, instead of lying I have a trick that is super complex to normal people, I say "I really don't wanna answer that, if that's ok for you." and ta-da, we change topics. I'm not saying it's easy not to lie in a world where people expect you to lie, but with therapy and courage, you can. I learned that every time I lie, I'm being ashamed of who I am.
@stuarthall38744 жыл бұрын
"I learned that every time I lie, I'm being ashamed of who I am." - I like that line. I think valuing to tell the truth has been one of my most beneficial qualities, greater that my intelligence or congeniality. As I've gotten older, I've found it harder to not deceive. I have come across people who will look for ammo against me and use partial truths as basis for lies against me. It is then hard for me not to lie in order to hide such truths. I also fear that I lie to myself more than I realize. That may be the biggest challenge to be truthful. Overcoming that necessitates having others in my life who love me and value truth. So many of us construct stories to uphold our own sense of worth and it might be a lie to think I am not vulnerable to that as well.

#5 is a really tough one for me. I have a son with autism, and I work with children, who have behavior disorders. Nearly all of the parents whose children I have worked with struggle with #5, because our children have difficulty conforming to social norms. We have to shift our feelings about what is appropriate and likable about our children when they have profound disabilities. If we do not, we will certainly dislike them. Sadly, those around us, who do not know our families, may not shift their ideals, and when this happens, sometimes our entire family becomes socially outcast.

There's a lot more information about autism now than there was a generation ago, enough for someone on the functional side of the spectrum to understand what's different about them and learn how to understand social cues and modulate their behavior. The world is "neurotypical" and it's unreasonable, not to mention unfair, to expect the majority to redefine the norm so people outside it feel better. People have a duty to be kind to those who are different but if those who are different don't undertake to learn how to interact normally with others, they will always be outsiders and never fully participate in life. Harsh but true.

Dr. Peterson: I actually HAVE met someone whose parents made them too independent. They let the child run free and undisciplined and unsupervised from a young age. In my observations over several years of this child, this resulted in the child becoming very insecure. I suppose it was because the child was thinking, "Well, who's watching out for me? I'm responsible for myself and my own survival." This seemed to be terrifying to the child (and rightfully so) and resulted in the child regressing to thumb-sucking at an "advanced" age among other fears.

what is so brilliant about him? He is just a seller, a good one. Nothing he said, especially here in his book isn`t new or brilliant. Pet a cat, let your child ride a skate!? Common, ask a child to tell you about his philosophy and you will here something similar. He is just an advertiser, selling books and talking what you want to hear. Nothing special about him. I am here because someone recommended this book, and I am sceptical, because I know what he sells, but I respect that person who recommended me. Now, I am sure, I am not going to read it. Positive psychology is for women and people who cannot bare the truth, the life, as it comes. And what is that, if you don`t tell the truth, at least don`t lie? There is no middle, like if you don`t say it, it is ok. No, it is not, you have to say something, and it better be the truth. Yes, truth hurts, but if you are strong, you will take it. If you are a pussy, read positive psychology, but it will never help you. I will go back to Andrew Tate, because he is real, this guy isn`t.

Excellent presentation. Sure, Jordan did the heavy lifting, but choosing the videos, presenting the text and music selection can greatly impact the message. Rule 12: “...in the narrowing time frame...in minutes... [that you have remaining] when you are up against the wall...[so, before that]… Take the time to appreciate everything you can that manifests itself, that allow itself to be appreciated.” Spiritually speaking, that’s when you are one with your world, and are nothing less or need anything more. Those intoxicated by their youth do not appreciate life’s last hour that comes inexorably as they squander time that would have been better used for self discovery. I have been on that journey of self discovery in the last four decades. It hasn’t been a smooth journey because there were not as much resources back then, but the struggle has been worth it. I have been challenged and have surmounted the obstacles on way to feel today I am worth it.

#1. Stand up straight with your shoulders back: Slouching often happens on the people who are shy and less confident. It happens to myself and my teenager daughter except I'm now gaining more and more conscious about it and will correct myself whenever I realize I fall back to slouching position, but she still doesn't put any effort into it despite I have reminded her many many times. She was getting irritated when I was trying to remind her again and again when we walk together. Any parents here have some good suggestions on that? I, on the other hand, use her as a reminder to myself not to slouch because it really looks awful. So with her standing by my side, I will always remember to stand up straight. I guess that's a silver lining.

It's funnily ironic that Kierkegaard's philosophy rings true for this video. This entire video is a direct product of a world that demands a nice and easy readable summary of Peterson's book. Maybe the time will come where people will yearn to entirely read his book as a step towards difficulty. I don't mean disrespect to the video, but it's interesting to consider.
