Traditionally, around puberty, a boy leaves his mother and goes to join the world of men. Rites of passage, rituals, trials - his father and other men put him through gauntlets and 'make him a man.' Depending on the culture, this could make him a violent warrior, a silent hunter, a noble knight, a psychopathic businessman, or an honest, strong, dependable man who works and looks after his family and community.
