Often, children act out because they are used to getting attention through bad behavior. Dr. Kevin Leman offers advice to help parents transform their child’s behavior. He discusses the benefits of allowing your kids to learn from real-life consequences and describes the importance of understanding your child’s temperament based on his birth order.

I do agree that I should love my kids no matter what. My dilemna is how do I teach my kids that their behavior affects people? If they treat people poorly, people don’t want to be around them: work with them, date them, marry them, etc. I don’t want my kids to think that others will love them no matter what they do. For others, it matters what you say, it matters what you do, how you act, how you treat them.

It's keeping the conversation about how our choices affect others. As kids mature they begin to understand their motives, actions, and consequences much better. 💗🙏💗🙏💗

You are right we have to teach our children that their behaviours get in the way of building relationships and we have to get strategies to teach them how to self regulate appropriately

I want to thank u. I have an ADHD,PTSD,and a little autism in an adopted child. I was so hopeless, down . I listened to you again, this is part of my great grandchildren,so I had to be reminded again. Never dealing with a child like this,I never knew it gave something like this. I turned on WDAC in Lanc. PA. I started laughing so bad and gave me another look . Thank u

In my experience, Dad's don't get called out by their kids the way mom's do. We're the bad guys year after year.

I maybe in the minority but saying kids misbehave because they want attention seems like just the surface. I feel like there are deeper reasons. Yes, they want attention but why??? Knowing the reason makes a huge difference. Sometimes my son misbehaves because he is bored, or feels alone, or feels jealous, or feels angry about something specific. I am a parent that acts and says few words. I do dialogue when needed. But my husband thinks I need to talk more with the kids and only act when it is a big issue. I do think they understand why they just don’t want to do it. They think they know better (my kids are teens).

If you read Dr. George Simon's book "In Sheep's Clothing", Understanding and Dealing With Manipulative People, there is a section on the manipulative child. Dr. Simon reintroduces the idea of character disorder in adults, as well as children, and he has had much success in helping both children and their frustrated parents turn things around. He is a Christian, so his approach is from a Christian perspective. I highly recommend reading this book.

Yes there are many reasons why kids misbehave. It all bottoms down to sin. I can say," Oh she is tired" or " Oh she was upset". But, the reality is, we can't excuse our kids misbehavior to some deep factor. They are attention seeking, but even if they had your attention 24/7, they would still mess up. Sometimes experience is the best teacher. You can pull a child's hand away from a hot stove 50 times and explain," That will hurt". But I guarantee, the moment that child burns their hand and experiences pain, that will be the last time. Parents can dialogue, but we can't excuse our kids sin for being hungry, bored, tired etc......

The root of all misbehavior is sin. Proverbs tells us foolishness is in the heart of a child, and kids need the rod of correction.

And the “rod” is NOT a literal rod to beat your kids. A “rod” in Hebrew is “matteh” which is a staff in biblical times used by shepherds to guide their sheep in the correct way to avoid danger etc. I pray over people reading the Bible to dig deeper into the meaning of scriptures. The Bible is a simple yet mysterious book of life with historical and cultural differences we have no clue about today. It’s vital to look closer at each verse, the information is amazing. Proverbs 13:24 is about guiding our kids like Shepards, gently but authoritatively like Jesus, by the way of (constant) conversations and showing them the right way by living it out. Psalms 23:4 king David says “your rod and staff comfort me” So a “rod” is NOT a beating tool, you will only inflict fear onto your child and they will grown up thinking violence is the answer-when Jesus is the answer 🙏🏼
