I watched my mother in law suffer from all of the side effects of statins. Including dementia. She was hypothyroid and that potentially caused her high cholesterol. 3 statins prescribed. She deteriorated horribly. I would never take a statin nor allow my family members to take one. Quality of life matters!! ❤

My cardiologist told me I needed a statin because of very high of the very bad, small cholesterol. "The only side effects are Nocebos/ all in the mind," I was told. So I took it. I had very bad side effects, that I did not expect. I think we "know" less about statins than we think we do. I doubt that my doc reported my side effects to anyone. When a doctor tells me there are no side effects to statins, my experience tells me I can not trust that doctor (regarding statins.)

I don't trust doctors regarding statins or anything else for that matter. They're drug pushers. That's how they make their money. And we're their clients who fill their pocketbooks. Well, I'm not. Food is medicine: animal fat, beef, bacon, butter, eggs, salt, water; they all heal the body and mind. And junk processed food, sugar, carbs, seed oils, canola oil, vegetable oil, they all contribute to illness.

High LDL = high risk? Really? I have read a study that associates high LDL with better health and longer life. i have also read that there is really no correlation between LDL and admission to hospital with heart attack.

*SO TRUE!* 💯 If anyone knows anything about the carnivore way of eating (high animal fat, No carb & sugar), they'd know that a high LDL is nothing to fear.

I nearly turned it off with the statin comments, too. However, the point is how to use statins and other drugs in the people with high CAC scores and skip the drugs with people who do not have unstable calcified plaques.

It's actually at 3:25 That's where I stop. Waste of my time. But I am reading comments and I'm pleasantly surprised by some of these comments because they are against taking statins and prefer a better way of eating whether it's low carb Keto or Carnivore. I prefer carnivore.

While I agree that the CAC score is a valuable risk assessment tool, I believe the science he quotes that shows a statin benefit are a bit misleading. I've read that study, and while the study correctly uses "absolute" risk (and not the misleading "relative" risk), it lumps all participants above 100 into one category in order to show a mortality benefit. In fact the data is broken down by < 100, 100 - 400, and > 400 but for some reason it lumps the latter two categories together to show the improvement for "all" those above 100 (most likely so statins look better for more people). However, if it showed the 100 - 400 group separately, I imagine the results for statin use would be marginal. Most likely the statins do help those above 400 because they are likely metabolically unhealthy and/or unable to change their lifestyle, and in those cases, it is likely that the anti-inflammatory benefits of statin can help a little.

I travelled to quebec where they are pay to play with a doctor's requisition. It took 24 hours after the CCTA requisition was faxed in to make an appointment two days after that. Amazing difference compared to Ontario. The cost was over 1000 (for the full CCTA) and my insurance within Ontario did not cover it. Just a simple CAC score is much cheaper, but probably also not covered by your insurance if not a resident of quebec. Hope that helps.

Dr. Nasir is a fan of diet and medication and discusses a false dichotomy... that making a choice, either diet or medication is just wrong. He's says that both together can be used effectively and explains how a CAC score with the #PowerOfZero can further differentiate between those needing medication or not. We need champions such as him, who bridge the gap, and bring de-prescribing and proper nutrition science to the mainstream. It's okay to be critical of his presentation but take a minute to appreciate what he's saying.

This was an interesting video. I too refused statins but maybe I need to revisit the subject with my MD. After all my position was based on what I heard on you tube and frankly, that’s not a peer reviewed source. I’m feeling a bit sheepish about my refusal after listening to this vid. And of course I reconsider my position because of this video.

Please watch Dr. Ken Berry, Dr. Anthony Chaffee, and Dr. Shawn Baker. You do *NOT* need statins. This conference is sponsored by a hospital/heart center. So this doc has to say what he says about statins.

You're a fan of low carb but also a fan of statins? That's all I need to know to stop watching this video. I thought for once, this was going to be different and just talk about low carb. Never mind. I paused the video right after he said that and I noticed that image of the steak and egg and the statin drugs and perhaps this conference are all sponsored by the Houston Methodist heart and Vascular Center! Cha-ching! Follow the money!

I read your comment just as this video was starting so I was on alert. Already at the 3.30 mark he says: "I'm a big fan of statins". There are a myriad of people who say they get muscle weakness and/or poor memory when taking statins. And I think we are starting to see the long term effects of statins, dementia for one and possibly an increase in diabetes. However with diabetes it is hard to know if it is from high carb/processed food lifestyle alone or statins are a contributing factor. I will keep listening to this talk more out of curiosity, but already I am very disappointed.

@@jobrown8146 In the big nurse's study from a few years ago 70% of the nurses who were taking statins got diabetes. Statin caused dementia is a real thing and was tested by taking said patients off the drug and the dementia went away, as part of the test the drugs were readministered and the dementia returned. Cancer rates also go up in people taking statins. Now it isn't just muscle pain, but muscle damage and 40% of the people taking them get it. On the other hand there the proven benefits of the drugs is minuscule at best. There have been 8 big studies on statins in the 21st century. & showed no benefit and the other one, the so called Jupiter study showed a tiny effect amounting to .7% less chance of a heart attack, that is 7 out of one thousand patients for all of the side effects. In the Jupiter study, the participants were cherry picked to give the best results. Where is there any proof that "high"ldl is dangerous, fact:there isn't any. Truthfully if you are over 65 the higher your ldl the lower your overall mortality and the lower your chances are of cancer, diabetes, stroke and etc. There are studies showing this, one Norwegian study showed the overall mortality was 80% for those with high ldl.

@@jobrown8146 My cardiologist has been pushing a statin for years, which I adamantly refuse, and he wanted to know why I'm so insistent. Told him "I'm trying to AVOID diabetes, not GUARANTEE I'll get it." He told me the diabetes risk is "only" for people who have a strong family history or predisposed. Told him "I'm the ONLY ONE in my immediate family of six (parents, three brothers) who is NOT diabetic. My Dad lost a leg, my grandmother lost a leg, my uncle lost a leg, my brother lost toes before his early death, all to diabetes." Despite this, my cardiologist still thought the so-called "benefits" were worth the risk. I have a CAC score of ZERO, and a recent heart cath proved completely clear arteries, and my risk for heart attack was calculated at FOUR percent by my cardiac surgeon (aortic valve replacement due to a congenital defect), yet my cardiologist still wants me on a statin. He's only been pushing it for about the last four years out of the 30 that I've been his patient, otherwise I'd be quick to replace him. Now that my valve was replaced, I'll see him only once a year instead of every six months.
