I don't really understand much of Jazz scales, but having listened to lots of Cory Henry clips, I have to say Dr. Lonnie has quite a different style, somehow a darker kind of energy, but not less fascinating. Probably more experimental. And of course his physical appearance adds to it. The organ guru....

You're correct about Lonnie, he had a unique style and was probably the greatest experimenter on the Hammond over the years. Some of his ideas worked better than others - always some weird and wonderful stuff coming out of that brain. He is the only man I can think of who would write a composition about killer bees attacking people in the park.

Heads and chords have to be memorized. If you don't memorize the chords you won't know the changes to be able to improvise. However, for the blues and rhythm changes, the chord progressions (changes) are standard.

I think he was struggling to pick up the chords, he wanted to join in the first tune Lonnie played but he couldn't get it. Dr. Lonnie being the gentleman that he is, stopped and then started tune 2 after checking he'd know how to play it.
