One of my nieces had this happen to her Husband unnecessarily died because he became obese to the point of immobility she would bring him smaller healthy & balanced meals he would protest, throw it at her then call his mother who would then bring over mass quantities of whatever he wanted. It was so sad before he died my niece left him because she didn’t want to watch it happen. Then her toxic MIL had the nerve to say “ he died of a broken heart” I was so angry about that! It’s ALL emotional eating. His body doesn’t need all the calories he eats, he eats to self-soothe and handle emotions, which is so unhealthy. Most WLS programs require you to be evaluated psychologically before they will consider surgery. Unless he addresses his issues and finds new coping mechanisms, he will never lose wt and keep it off. I really hope he succeeds.
@Itried20takennames
@Itried20takennames Жыл бұрын
@@nancyjackson8886 weWell, yes and no, as while people eat emotionally, there is no good evidence that therapy of addressing past emotional issues helps with weight loss. It was tried many, many times in studies in the 80s, when obesity was up but bariatric surgery was’t yet as good and much riskier, and people who dieted, with half also receiving therapy for “why they ate” lost the same…usually which was “no weight loss.” There are many beautiful theories (address why you eat, and you will least less) destroyed by hard reality. Psychiatric or psychological counseling is sometimes used as a “last resort, can’t hurt” option, as with Dr. Now, and many large surgeries ask for some psych evaluation, as it would be bad to have a person with unrecognized paranoia who flees immediately after waking with no follow-up meds/care, or many other complications a major psych issue might cause, and also often to be sure the person is competent (in the specific medico-legal definition) to understand the risks/benefits of surgery. But overall the psych evaluation doesn’t do much (or at least anything studies can measure) for weight loss.
@nancyjackson8886
@nancyjackson8886 Жыл бұрын
@@Itried20takennames I am not sure what your experience is with bariatric patients but I’ve taken care of many and that is just not the experience I have had. Psychiatric counseling is absolutely required as part of the work up. I don’t get my info from watching Dr. Now. There have been so many studies done that link emotional eating with morbid obesity. And I don’t know of any “large surgeries” that require psychiatric evaluation other than bariatric surgery . . .except perhaps an occasional transplant patient.

A selfish, lazy one. I was worried about my daughter because she put on weight at her Dad's house (and at his Moms, her Grandmother). They're overweight and would give the kids junk out of spite for me bc I was so concerned about eating and being healthy. I tried talking to them hut some people are just hateful and cruel and would rather harm someone they "care" about if it hurts someone they "hate". 😢 When I finally had to talk to my daughter about it directly, she was 11, 5 feet 3", and weighed over 165. She had already veen diagnosed with high BP when she was 8 yrs old. As careful as I was with my words and tone, they still managed to convince her that I was the bad parent. She now hates me (she's 19) and when I ask what I should have done differently, she says that "it made her hate herself when I brought it up". By "bringing it up", she means that I would say, "Hey I'm going for a walk, why don't you come with me?" or "I just learned this new exercise, can I show it to you?" I did it exactly the way the pediatricians and therapist told me to. But thanks to the Dad and Nana, she still took it the wrong way. Now she's about 5 feet 7" and weighs 165lbs. But she still has really high BP and se takes birth control. ***** My point is, that a good Mother doesn't wait until a Disease is too progressed before she intervenes. A good mother sees red flags and intervenes immediately. I hope one day my daughter can understand that I only ever wanted her to be healthy. I just don't want anything bad to happen. And since obesity, diabetes, and heart disease run in both sides of our family, I was afraid to just sit there and quietly watch as she slowly died. 😢

@@inthelandofmorethansmall7582I'm the same age as your daughter and I can see it from both your perspective and hers. If I was a mother to a child who has started to become overweight, of course I'd be worried and would try to help. I can also see why as a young girl, her mother bringing up her weight and being the only one making an issue of it (as other family members would feed her whatever they wanted and not comment on her weight gain) would see you as the villain and the person who caused her to be self-conscious. I hope one day though she realises you were only ever trying to look out of her and that, perhaps, if you hadn't, she could be a lot heavier, struggling with a lot more health issues. I've seen very small children (some no older than around 10) very morbidly obese being enabled by their parents and it's very shocking and disheartening because I wonder how any parent can look at their child constantly gasping for breath from the slightest movement and think it's okay

When I look at these obese patients, I see nothing more than what it was like living with my alcoholic, pill popping, clonazepam addicted, manipulative, violent, lying daughter who would do and say ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to get her own way- EVEN use her own child over my head and threaten to call the police that ALWAYS ended up having HER being hauled off by them! There is no difference between these people and drug addicts. They just try harder to behave while being filmed most of the time- That's all! Thankfully, my daughter has been clean for 7 years, and my grandson who will be 19 years old (who considers me his mom) has come out of that situation better than I could ever imagine. It's no different than a child screaming for a toy who won't stop screaming until he gets his way. You wouldn't say the child is a toy addict. These people have not been told no and do not have self control, like children. I have a big issue with people using the term "addict" lately to describe these people, because food is not addicting. Cravings are strong desires for sugary or greasy foods that we all have and all ignore to various degrees, we're not "food addicts" constantly battling addiction. These people are just gluttons and don't care.

Actually I've heard that a lot of super morbidly obese people have strong muscles under all that fat (if they're mobile), because their muscles have to adjust into being able to carry all that weight. My mom is an an overweight woman (not nearly as overweight at the people on this show though) and she's insanely strong, stronger than my dad or brother. She's beat them in arm wrestling and she can carry much heavier items. When something heavy needs to be carried (like the motor of a boat) she's always the one to do it. So yeah, the strength comes from having to carry all those extra pounds.

Also remember every person who’s goin through something and is self harming is not hurting others . That’s respectful in its self . Some people go through things and then HURT OTHERS . so one major thing i learned is EMPATHY AND JUDGEMENT. Just pray for people going through things. Ever had a loved one in need ask you for something? A loved one asks you for meth, it's easy to say no to that. A loved one asks you for food?! It's hard to say no to feeding a loved one. Then it gets more complex and logic goes out the window when the person makes it clear you'll make them upset if they're not fed. THAT is often the case and why enablers can't stop. They love the person and selfishly don't want to lose their bond with said person.

I know multiple people that have had these type of surgeries And I know at least 3 people that have had these surgeries that have regained almost all of the weight back and are morbidly obese. I also know a few people that have had the surgeries and been very successful. The thing that all of the people that weren't successful have in common is that they didn't change their habits and if they did they did it for a few weeks and then they went back to old eating habbits. A lot of times the root of the problem is that people literally have a food addiction and they also have a problem of using the food as an emotional coping mechanism. If those psychological issues aren't worked on and those habits aren't changed then even if you do things as permanent as a gastric bypass I've seen people regain the weight because they just find ways around it like they can't eat a lot at once but they'll just keep eating smaller meals and not the right kinds of foods. In our society a lot of people believe there's a quick fix for things and they are there to get the surgery because they think the surgery is going to be the thing that is going to fix them when really there's already something broken inside that needs to be fixed that no surgery can just fix. The surgery is just a small part of what needs to happen.
