Yes because of the crap food that's available. Food can be as deadly as drugs and I would say just as if not more addicting. Fast food isn't food. Its chemicals and has things in it to make you crave it. Dangerous. The government doesn't want healthy people they want sick overweight people so they can push their drugs

@@B_Bodziak He's probably developed a method of compartmentalizing. Constant frustration is unavoidable when this is your medical specialty. Dr. Now gets lied to, yelled at, and ignored every day. And the amount of whining and complaining he hears would drive anyone else insane. Enablers and their antics must be highly frustrating too. And oh my God the constant refusal to even TRY to walk or do PT, and the times the person doesn't lose a single pound in 3 months. Then there are the absolute psycho / clinically delusional patients every once in a while. How do you argue with a person that honest-to-God, 100%, and with intense conviction, actually believes a human body can gain 80 pounds of water weight in 3 months because they retained water once when they hurt their leg at 15 years old? Like how....? I ❤ Dr. Now. I can't imagine how much bullshit that man has listened to given the length of his career!

@@katherinejoseph7060 Food addiction is one of the hardest addictions to beat because food can not be prohibited. No one would expect an alcoholic to be able to "control themselves" by having two drinks every day. But, that's what is expected of those with food addictions. Additionally, there are no legal repercussions for indulging in excessive food like there often are with alcohol and drug addictions. I hope that there is group therapy (like 12 Step meetings for other addictions) for Dr. Now's patie

@@B_Bodziak There actually IS a 12 Step Program that is used for weight loss . IT'S CALLED OVEREATERS ANONYMOUS AND IT WORKS GREAT IF YOU STAY ON THE PROGRAM EXACTLY AS YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO . I DID ONE OF THE PROGRAMS BACK IN THE 1980s AND IN THE 1990s - YES !!!! I DID IT TWICE AND IT WORKED GREAT BOTH TIMES . MY PROBLEM WAS THAT I HIT A PLATEAU , BOTH TIMES THAT I WAS ON THE PROGRAM AND I JUST LOST MY DESIRE TO STAY ON IT ANY LONGER . I WAS EATING ONLY 2 MEALS A DAY AND I STILL WASN'T LOSING ANY WEIGHT . I GOT UPSET ABOUT IT AND AT MYSELF BECAUSE I COULDN'T LOSE ANY MORE WEIGHT THAN I HAD ALREADY LOST WHICH WAS 96 POUNDS THE FIRST TIME AND 86 POUNDS THE SECOND TIME . IN BETWEEN EACH TIME , I WOULD GAIN THE WEIGHT BACK - PLUS SOME MORE WEIGHT ADDED TO THAT WEIGHT !!!! NOW I WEIGH 245 POUNDS AND I USED TO WEIGH UP TO 269 POUNDS SEVERAL YEARS AGO . WHILE I'M NOT HAPPY WITH MY WEIGHT NOW , I'M NOT TRYING TO LOSE ANY MORE WEIGHT BECAUSE IT JUST SEEMS THAT WHENEVER I TRY TO LOSE WEIGHT , I JUST GAIN IT RIGHT BACK ANYWAY . SO , HERE I SIT ON MY SOFA TYPING THIS TO YOU SO THAT YOU CAN GET SOME INSIGHT INTO THE MIND OF A COMPULSIVE OVEREATER . MY MOM AND MY DAD BOTH DIED IN 2007 AND THE ONLY FAMILY THAT I HAVE LEFT IS MY SISTER WHO IS MEAN TO ME AND I DON'T EVEN UNDERSTAND WHY SHE WON'T COME AND SEE ME . SHE LIVES ABOUT 10 TO 15 MINUTES FROM ME AND SHE STILL WON'T COME AND SEE ME !!!! SHE SAYS THAT SHE HAS TO WORK AND SHE DOESN'T HAVE ANY TIME TO COME AND SEE ME . WELL , I'M NOT GOING TO BE AROUND FOR MUCH LONGER BECAUSE I AM GOING TO BE 64 YEARS OLD THIS YEAR AND SHE'LL BE 66 YEARS OLD THIS YEAR . I HAVEN'T SEEN HER IN ALMOST 9 YEARS AND I JUST THINK THAT IT'S A SHAME THAT SHE WON'T COME AND SEE ME ANY MORE . IT WILL BE 9 YEARS IN APRIL THAT SHE LAST SAW ME . I'M SO LONELY AND ALONE WITH NO CAR TO GO TO THE PLACES THAT I WOULD LIKE TO GO . I CAN RIDE THE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION BUS TO GO TO THE DOCTOR OR TO WALMART IF I NEED TO , BUT , OTHER THAN THAT , I'M STUCK HERE IN MY APARTMENT . THE APARTMENT WHERE I LIVE IS FOR PEOPLE WITH MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS AND MOST OF THEM ARE SCHIZOPHRENIC AND I HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME GETTING ALONG WITH THEM BECAUSE THEY DON'T REMEMBER MUCH OF WHAT I SAY TO THEM . I'M HERE BECAUSE I WAS DETERMINED TO KILL MYSELF IN2005 AND I HAVE MAJOR CLINICAL DEPRESSION WITH SUICIDAL THOUGHTS AND ACTIONS AND I HAVE BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER AS WELL . SO IT'S JUST VERY DIFFICULT TO HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH ANYONE HERE . I REALLY JUST WANT TO GO BACK HOME TO MY OLD HOME , BUT I CAN'T BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO PAY FOR MY OLD HOME BECAUSE IT'S GONE UP IN PRICE (WAAAAAY UP) - FROM $80 , 000 00 TO $496 , 000 . 00 IN JUST 19 YEARS !!!!! THERE'S NO WAY THAT I COULD AFFORD THAT AMOUNT OF MONEY - EVER !!!! I JUST HAVE ALOT OF PROBLEMS RIGHT NOW AND I CAN'T GET OUT OF THEM FOR ANYTHING . I JUST HOPE THAT YOU HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND !

It's hard to comprehend how much some humans can eat. I would literally throw up if I even tried to eat a fraction of what they do. I'm stuffed after a cup of soup and small sandwich. And I eat a meal like that and then stop. Sometimes it tastes so good I think I want more. But in 20 min or so, I'm very glad I didn't because I'm full and don't need more. Mom chose an abusive man over kids plus enabled and spoiled the kid with food. Sorry but if my abusive man went away for months he couldn't physically force me to go if he wasn't around. That was their freedom. It was moms choice. Many women choose the man over the kids. U don't watch your toddlers starve but fill your husband's plate. U feed your kids when he isn't watching or around & feed them healthy. U take your kids out of there to safety. But still as an adult grow up and stop blaming being a glutton on something that happened decades ago. Every person on this earth has suffered tragedy. Death, abuses etc. The majority don't dwell on it for decades and become addicts and make excuses and do nothing with their lived. They move on get over it learn help others become productive. It's called life.

In situations like these, I often feel like the best thing to do is to keep her in the hospital and implement a strict 1000-1200 calorie diet AND have the staff stop ANY outside food from going into the room by visitors. This should last until the patient can physically take care of herself, including hygiene. That would likely lead to a much healthier outcome down the road than sending her home as is.

I have struggled with weight issues most all my life. I've had lots of sexual abuse and abandonment issues since I was little. I think all that plays a role in my issues, but that's no excuse. I've told my kids if I ever get too big to get around, they better not enable me. If I start yelling or talking crazy, just close the door on me and only bring me a healthy amount of food, lol. I am currently 5'7" , large skeletal frame and weigh 230. I'm far from being unable to move around, but I could easily get there if I don't watch myself closely.

I'd have sent her to rehab, and got her a lot of therapy. I always feel like people who had addictions since childhood, need so much more than "you sort yourself out". Habits are such a difficult thing to break, especially when those habits have been with you since childhood. As an example; if you were taught to brush your teeth daily, you wouldn't like to skip a day as an adult. If you weren't made to brush your teeth daily, as an adult you're more likely to skip brushing. If such simple habits are difficult to break, addictions would be 100x harder. These people need that extra help.

I think this show is a testament to what trauma can do as well as how coping skills and healthy relationships can make or break people. Unhealthy habits can be everything from drugs and alcohol to gambling, sex, violence, and/or food. We have to love ourselves and our families… and create new generations who don’t have to recover from their childhood/teens.
@B_Bodziak Жыл бұрын
She's 5'4" and 750lbs. I'd be surprised if she is able to sit upright. Someone this size and immobile does not get this way by themselves. She can't even answer the door for food delivery. If a family member doesn't want to fight with her, close her bedroom door and turn up the music....or just leave the house for a few hours. I understand she has an addiction and food-related addictions have to be the most difficult to recover/over come, but the co-dependency shown by her mother has to be addressed first. Food addiction is much harder to treat than other addictions, like alcohol, drugs, and gambling, because the addict must continue to eat food everyday while in recovery. No medical professional would ever suggest an alcoholic drink 2 cocktails per day or a heroin addict have 2 hits instead of 10 every day, BUT no more. That's exactly what is required of someone with a food addiction. One thing I see missing from this show is any type of group therapy. Other addictions have 12 Step meetings that are often therapeutic for attendees. I think the same is needed for Dr Now's patients even if the patient doesn't learn anything new in the meetings, the accountability to others can make a difference.

You make some really excellent points (although I should add that weaning is a technique used for a variety of addictions, including drugs and alcohol - it's just that they're not vital for life, so the process is very different). I imagine that, traditionally, the lack of group therapy was probably due to the mobility of the patients and the difficulty of finding a venue that was accessible for all. In this day and age, though, with video conferencing so easily available to most through apps like Zoom, etc, there's no reason why group therapy couldn't be done virtually. Many people of this weight are isolated because of their size and lack of mobility, making it far easier for them to manipulate those around them (enablers), and be manipulated (by feeders and abusers). I imagine that virtual group therapy could be a real game changer for many people in this position, trying to overcome food addiction. Excellent idea! 👍

Most patients who get bariatric surgery have to get counseling . I had a year of counseling and meetings with dieticians prior to my surgery. I wonder since dr only does severe obese cases if its so life threatening that maybe they dont have time to do all the counseling before the surgery or the show doesnt show it because its not binge worthy.
@georgina-a Жыл бұрын
@@denisesnyder5208 I suspect the OP meant the addition of group therapy on top of standard counselling. With addiction, it helps to know there's a group of people in your corner who understand you - & who you are accountable to. In the early stages, some people are put off using their drug of choice in 12 step programmes because they don't want to let down their sponsor, or have to admit they failed in front of their group. While that's not healthy long term, it helps to break the physical addiction until the counselling sessions start to work and people care enough about their own body and health to do it for themselves. You mentioned that you had surgery. It's a big old thing to prepare for and go through. I hope everything is going well for you 💕👍

Scolding doesn't always help. It only causes severe depression. The mother should have got this woman to help way before she got this heavy. Family dysfunctional is what caused this. It's a long journey for her, but with good therapy and positive support, she can turn this around. Her mother made Yes, and the mother made some bad choices. My hope is that she doesn't abandon her again. This young lady needs positive people around her. Prayers to her

@Nat , in some cases it's almost impossible to get away from a family issue, mainly because it's family, we are all raised to respect, help and protect each other, then when it comes to mother and father... It's barely impossible, mainly because when she started overeating was a kind of revenge due ro the anger she had of her parents. She was probably depressed and anxious, a combo that I can say it's unconceivable for a normal person to understand the things that can happen to people with psychiatric problems that are untreated. Finding treatment alone, for them, is , even when the person is aware of the problem, very difficult. By the video, she was angry and totally unaware of the fact that she was SICK, yes, sick, due to psychiatric problems she didn't have control of her anger neither of her addiction, she was totally unaware that it was regarding to illnesses issues. A toxic family relationship since a person is quite young is likely to cause serious psychiatric and psychological issues that can only be treated since the acknowledgement of the matter, otherwise it's impossible to be treated. She was basically in a "cage" with other " irrational animals" like her. You can't teach a blind person to read a handwritten paper!

I think before Oprah in her self help age, you tube, the social media platforms, and podcasts most people didn’t have resources or access to counseling or self help but in today’s world there are sooo many self help things to teach you how to deal with toxic relationships… one thing I learned is, I can’t change the person’s action/response but I can determine how I’m going to respond…that has saved me many minutes of my life that I wouldn’t get back trying to change someone who sees no issue with their behavior ( family).

If he told his patients they need immediate counseling, they might feel defeated from the start. Instead he gives them a chance to turn their life around on their own. Only if they fail he gives them something else. It's a good strategy, if you give all the help at once from the beginning, there is no way out from possible failures in the journey.
