I own an IT company and give all my Execs and Managers complete hiring autonomy. Out of curiosity I recently asked each of them about their hiring practices. The common denominators of what they considered “no-go’s” were pronouns and anyone under 30.

I see pronouns listed on x profiles and immediately dismiss everything they have or could say. So it's not just in the hiring space, even society will eventually stop listening. Whenever I see a ridiculous argument I can guess they'll have their pronouns in their bio with a near 100% accuracy.

As a professional in corporate America, I have personally witnessed my colleagues work 20 to 30 hrs OT almost every week only receive average ratings(3.2 to 3.5/5) on yearly evaluations. When they justified their above and beyond behaviors, they were met with gaslighting. To ignore that companies abuse hardworking professionals without compensation, ignores the fact that these same companies allow lazy workers to remain without discipline. Reward good behaviors and punish negative behaviors. It is that simple. Stop burning out your top performers, because management lacks the skills to hold bare minimum employees accountable.

I was a nurse for 44 years and we were constantly told that if we are never late, never out sick, always do everything correctly then we are “meets expectations “ which is another way of saying we are just average. It was impossible to get a rating of excellent on our evaluations.
@grilledcheeseandsoup1652
@grilledcheeseandsoup1652 7 ай бұрын
Exactly 💯! I actually was doing my job and the job of two other employees because management knew they wouldn't do their jobs. When reviews came around we all got the same "meets expectations" scores. And not only that one of the non-workers was promoted to a better paying position. When I asked about it I was told I was needed in the position I was in to get the work done, but the higher paying position had less work load so the minimal effort workers would do fine there. I learned a hard lesson that day.

Millennial here. I back both sides however working for 20 plus years I can say going above and beyond gets you used and abused with a pat on the back. They will make you feel important but refuse to raise your pay. Only once in my life was I compensated greatly for my hard work going above and beyond. Guess what? Still got laid off when company had to downsize. I completely agree with investing in yourself but like Ryan said it’s really hard to continue with that great work ethic and attitude when you get kicked to the side. Been there done that

My youngest daughter was Gen Z. She was the manager at a Jersey Mike's. She hired a Gen Z college student who was late for 20 shifts in one month. When my daughter fired this worker, the worker argued that the starting times were unfair since [they] had trouble getting up from the afternoon naps after a long and grueling day in classes. My daughter looked at this person and said, "Now you don't have that problem."

Adults have been doing that since the beginning of time. You choose no one else did . Learn from your mistakes and keep being a good fire fighter, and have the life you want. So my ice order was $7.04. I pulled a 20 dollar bill out of my pocket, then four cents, and handed that to the Gen Z at the register. I instanly saw her brain lock up. So she started to give me the change the "amount tendered button" said i was due. She couldn't do the math! I said that isn't right. I gave you the 4 cents change. Her reply was "but you gave that to me after i put 20 in the amount tendered." This was a high school girl. I said if you can't do math, get the manager!! The manger (also a Gen Z) asked me what i wanted!! THE CORRECT CHANGE!! I finally did a math quiz to get my point across and told both of them they should be ashamed of themselves! If we don't fix our education system, nothing we do to try to save this country will matter.

As a Gen Xer, I've been working since I was 14 and have been employed by eight different organizations. Over the years, I've observed how both employers care for their employees and how employees care about their work. As a former supervisor, I've noticed a lack of ambition in the younger generation, but I've also seen dedicated employees devalued when their company changes direction-often leading to them being passed over for promotions, let go, or quietly phased out. I've witnessed people retire with regrets, realizing too late that they missed out on life while dedicating themselves to work. It's a double-edged sword. While the younger generation often lacks goals or the drive to achieve more, I've always believed that "if a job is worth doing, do it well." As I grow older, sometimes I wonder if employees are truly valued or merely taken advantage of because of their ambition to succeed.

The battalion HQ wanted someone who could pull the 12 hour shift 7 days a week and stay out of trouble. Sure my peers got Sunday off but I got the ac and my own bathroom. Sometimes that’s life. What are we to do if we weren’t born into wealth??? Be homeless, jobless and on top of that regular stress, tiredness and anger as you’ve mentioned. It sucks at times but we cannot survive without the benefits of working. You have to put it out of your mind about being notarized or appreciated, sure it would be nice but feelings don’t pay the bills. Especially if you have children, they learn from what they see and that’s why these Gen Z’s are so ridiculously lazy because they weren’t taught much on how to take care of themselves. It’s either work for someone and deal with it or establish your own business and work for yourself and pray that it’s profitable.

I’m a 24 year old social worker fresh out of college and lucky enough to find a company that cares about us as employees and encourages us to grow in the company and in our education. My boyfriend however, he is 28 in a tech job and he is overworked and underpaid. He will be on call every couple of weeks for an entire week and sometimes only get 2 hours of sleep that entire night and then be expected to work the entire next day as regular work day then get yelled at if he doesn’t talk enough in their daily meeting by his manager. Then he gets off from work and is on call again the next next. If it is a regular week and he works overtime, he is not paid extra. He has been trying to get a promotion because people above him have noticed him but all they offered was the smallest raise ever and that was just because they found out he was looking at other jobs. It has nothing to do about work ethic. We are being treated unfairly in certain cooperations. I think Social Work is slightly different because we focus on mental health and wellbeing but can’t say the same for finance, tech, etc.

The thing is, the payoff for hard work isn't a fraction of what it used to be. My grandfather worked for IBM for 40 years. He was an incredibly hard worker and was rewarded with job security and financial stability. He raised three kids and put them through college. Had a home, cars, a pension and even a pension for his homemaker wife long after he died. He was never laid off and the company was loyal in return. I understand the frustration with this new generation but there's a whole other side to this conversation. Wage stagnation, lack of employer loyalty, non existent job security and people being laid off so CEOs can collect bigger bonuses is part of the problem too. Hard work is important but you it's hard to justify an old school work ethic when the the old school rewards are all but gone.

@@JJ-nu8qi Nope. I don't think anyone wants to do that. Even the older generations I mentioned in my original comment probably didn't want to do that. But the point is the payoff for working hard and being loyal to a company was a pretty good bargain so they did it. There's a misunderstanding that gen X, boomers, etc worked hard because of "values". As if it was sheer work ethic that drove them and it's simply not true. I guarantee you they wouldn't have worked as hard if the reciprocity from their employers weren't there. Similarly, I believe if gen z had upward mobility, healthy wages and job stability, they'd work just as hard as the previous generations. The whole framing of this conversation around "values" is a red herring.

@David_K_ Yea, I'm trying to say that Boomers are some heroes. There probably was, on average, a better work ethic, but that is not really what we are talking about. But if I offered the same deal to most younger people, they wouldn't want it. 35 plus years in a factory doing the same job, ending up with a pension that you can barely make ends meet maybe if SS comes through. Most of these boomers didn't get rich like this generation thinks. They just got tired used up and tossed away like all workers end up eventually.

I was offered several permanent positions while floating because my work ethic showed. We (PCCs) are also trained in answering calls for nurses, MAs, doctors, etc., scheduling, preparing all sorts of paperwork and consent forms, and coordinating referrals on top of checking in patients. I’m proud of what I do. It is not a “lazy girl” job. My clinic manager was a PCC and worked his way up to manager by going above and beyond his job description. I also feel like I have a level head regarding work-life balance. I was a 911 operator before becoming a PCC. I worked horrible and stressful hours and my body was breaking down because of it. I worked 7.5 years at a hospital and went above and beyond with everything as a CNA (certified nurse assistant). I never called in sick or missed a day or even late. I would show up 30min early for work. I donated my time after work feeding the poor and homeless with the Saint Nicholas shirt for them to be seen as a good place in our community. I volunteered for every thing even to help out when the nurses needed help with a full day of pts to take care of at the last minute. Never a thank you or recognition. For the yearly evaluation I was so excited to get a $1.00 raise but nope only 2 pennies 😢. Manager said higher ups will NEVER ALLOW 5 STARS. It crushed me. Took the 2 cents and won’t ever go above and beyond. Life lesson learned the hard way. 😢

You have to be careful though. When someone is making you shoulder higher risk without higher reward, you have to draw the line. You don't want someone to give you all the responsibilities of a manager but none of the authority or compensation. You don't need to be a d**k about it, but you should politely inform them that you're renegotiating the contract. I’m 35 and have a full time job and yet feel like the harder I work, the farther away all hope for a better future gets. Another millennial here, I 100% agree. And it's disheartening when you DO go above and beyond, and are ignored or even penalized over it due to some bs policy. It really incentivizes you to do only what's on the contract just to keep the job. But whenever the job violate parts of the contract on the employee's expense (scheduled extra hours without asking, skipped overtime pay, ignoring time off requests), the employee is basically forced to go along with it or demonized as someone who never tried to begin with. There's an issue with laziness, but the good employees are the ones punished for it without so much as a thank you

Having worked for both big corporations and smaller companies throughout my life I can safely say that going above and beyond at any job rarely gets you anywhere and instead you are taken advantage of, overworked, and underpaid. Bigger companies are especially notorious for this. Maybe it's just Arizona but companies expect "team players" (do extra work for free) but when it comes to cutting back they have no loyalty toward their employees. The days of staying with any company for most of your life are over...there is no job security and the bigger companies will kick you to the curb just years before retirement...I see it happen all the time with folks my age (late 50s/early 60s).

I live in Arizona, and am in my 50s, and my effort going above and beyond helped me become a regional sales manager, a partner in a CPA firm, and a CFO later becoming CEO… Conversely, many of my peers took ten to fifteen or more years to achieve a manager level position with as much, or more, education… It is not just the work ethic that one must have, but they must also make it clear, and even ask for, the promotion… I see many people work hard but never ask “what” they need to do for the promotion, ask for more responsibility, or make it clear they are ready for the promotion… As some formerly responsible for hiring and promoting, we want to someone handle more than just the minimum expectation - not a single company promotes based on years of experience and doing the minimum… Finally, let me also add, I have seem many hard working people that just lack the ability to manage, mentor, and teach others despite their work ethic and never make manager - not everyone has that ability, yet many are under the mistaken belief that they are entitled to move into a management position just based on experience!

She will still get replaced by AI anyway, whether she's lazy or not. All our jobs will, eventually, and to refute this is foolish. A company’s primary goal is to generate returns for its owners. It is the ultimate responsibility of a business to deliver profit to its shareholders. Once AI becomes sentient, that will end white-collar work, and all that's left of the labor market will be the robots, the people who own the robots, and the blue-collar workers who build/maintain them. When you have a flood of workers entering a blue-collar market, the value of the labor market will go down, making it cheap for owners to purchase said labor. That's the future that's coming, and GenZ doesn't even know it yet.

I work with a coworker who started working at my organization 7 years ago when I did. I took an entry level administrative position, but she had a Master's degree and was looking to work as a Zoning Planner. She had no experience and was just out of school so she applied fr a secretarial position. She worked in that position for about a year, when the position was converted to a Zoning Tech position. She was able to get a bump to a Zoning Tech III because of her education. After about a year she applied for a Planner I position and she did that for a couple of years. She then applied as a Planner II and gave it a year. She is now a Senior Planner. She writes staff reports and does analyses of projects and she makes presentations to the Board of giant projects for our county, which is larger than the entire state of Delaware. She could have jumped in as a Senior Planner, but it would have been excruciatingly difficult. Working first as a secretary and tech first allowed her to learn about the processes that go into the applications we process. She started with creating Agendas for public hearings and putting together the presentations for the Zoning director. She learned our extensive, proprietary software that is not the most user-friendly. She walked into her Senior position with knowledge that allows her to pinpoint the area where something has gone wrong immediately. Something she could not have done walking in off the street! AND, she did this with a toddler at home and she managed to have 2 more babies during that 7 years. Not to mention a year and a half doing the job at home due to Covid! These young people need to understand how important "paying your dues" really is to THEM. If you want to hop scotch ahead to the corner office because you have educational credentials and you think that you deserve it you will find yourself unprepared and lacking answers when a commissioner is ringing your phone on behalf of an applicant who is unhappy. They don't want to hear that you aren't sure or passing the buck. If you shortchange your experience it WILL lead to humiliation at the very least. And at worst your name could be seen in your field as poisonous. This is real life. In many cases there won't be a second chance to make things right.

We arent underachievers, we're locked in a really bad situation that we physically and mentally do not have the time to deal with. Deadend jobs, or workibg multiples after turning 18, was not what life was about. Having over 100K in college debt to better our careers, only to still be at underpaying jobs, was not the dream we were led to believe. Being taken advantage of by our employers and companies after being hired, all the while trying to fend for ourselves while supporting OTHER people, stops us from advancing. We arent entitled or underavhievers, we're frustrated because we were let down.

@@AzureEnzi Many people in previous generations had to work multiple jobs. Go cry somewhere else. 100 k in debt for college, well what courses did you take? If they are liberal arts type degrees they are worth less than toilet paper on the job market. There is a huge deficit for trades ,blue collar work. Yet young people are signing up and getting into debt getting degrees in gender studies and the like. These degrees qualify you for very little in the real world. The world needs electricians, plumbers,carpenters and mechanics. Guess what? Those trades actually pay very well once you have your diplomas. Your generation looks down on these careers and are scared of actual physical work.
@AzureEnzi
@AzureEnzi 5 ай бұрын
@@Bunbunfunfun this comment legit screams "political stance" and not introspection. Yea many people had to work multiple jobs back then, sure, but our multiple jobs combined should not equal a barely livable wage. Two jobs 20-40 years ago would get you a huge house, property, and assets. You could afford 2+ kids and still have enough to save for retirement. Now, two average jobs at the same salary would barely qualify for a livable wage. Minimum wage now is not livable, and it's supposed to be the minimum payable to allow for a person to survive on their own. Second, no matter what degree, youre paying for the college. Wheyher it be in fashion, biology, business, gender studies, or law, each college has their price and so do the courses you take, no matter what degree you get. That one is obvious but for some reason that passes by with many people who dont sit down and look at the numbers or experiences of others. Dont downplay what people are interested in and want a career in. And even then, your degree will noy garantee a job nor a wage youre entitled to. What the world needs to do is find a way to fix this bs divide between the generations, and to find a fix to the economic gap that you desperately believe doesnt exist. Ive done the hard work, and so have millions of others my age, older, and younger than I. We were sold the wrong dream and you cant see that.

But being mad that a generation is upset that they are walking into jobs paying the same rate they were paying decades ago, all while rent is $1,500-2,000 (nothing included), gas and food has gone up 3-4x, and a starter home is nearly $500,000 and increasing each year, is a bit absurd. Then saying, "well why aren't you motivated". They were late to work, goofed around for most of the day (a 1-2 hour project took an entire day for them to do) and never held themselves accountable. When I would address it to them, they said I didn't know anything about this kind of work and they had more experience because they went to college (keep in mind, I also went to college and have been doing this kind of work for 15 years. I know what I'm doing). They would make costly mistakes that would upset the clients and then blame others. I had to fire them. If I didn't, they would have put my business out.

Want us to work hard? THEN PAY MORE. Notice how none of them talk about what they pay their workers. That's because they probably don't pay very well. Business owners pay low wages, but expect the world from their workers. And when their workers do go above and beyond, and deliver them the world, they get upset and ask "why didn't you give me the moon as well?!" "Nobody wants to work" anymore, because "nobody wants to pay" anymore! Pay less, get less. Get what you pay for. That's how it works for us, the peons. Why should it be different for business owners? What do we get in return for working hard? We don't get raises or promotions. No. We get to scrimp and scrape constantly just to make basic bills, and at the end of it all, all we have to show for it is a stack of rent receipts. It's no wonder Gen Z is checking out, they are right to do so, and quite frankly it's past time. These business owners are entitled and delusional, end of story.
