@Old Ironsides Until the age of 18, they are legally in your custody. At 16 they can get jobs and start building up money. Usually, it's not a problem to let them chill and lay low till you realize how much builds up. Retirement money won't be enough to take care of young adults. So eventually, they have to buckle up and play their role in society. Meaning getting a job and helping with the bills or going out and finding a place of their own. Which will help them gain responsibility and respect.

I'm physically disabled. I got sick when I had just turned 18. Literally. I turned 18 in August and the day before Thanksgiving I had surgery which set off an incredibly painful, debilitating disease that took two years to diagnose. This disease has a 1-3 month window to fully intervene until it becomes permanent. I saw 50 doctors, specialists, had over 15 surgeries, countless tests, scans, etc. I'm 27 now and live with my grandmother who raised me because my life was ruined by this illness. I tried so hard to get back on my feet. To finish at least a certification for anything I could do with my limitations and skill set from my time in court reporting school. Which I was top of my class at that school and was supposed to take my cert test 6 months prior to having surgery. But... I never got to. As an adult, I hate that I live at home. But I don't have a choice. And I tried, so hard. I act my age. I do what I can with my disability to keep my room tidy, help my grandma around the house with chores, if she has surgery or is sick I take care of her, I care for our pets. This dude is disgusting. He's 45 and seems perfectly fine yet he's just a lazy piece of shit. I hate people like this. I'd give ANYTHING to have a healthy body and just be on my own, live my own life. And there's this human skid mark. Ugh.

@Hi Man it really does ruin your mental health, too, being like this. It isn't natural for an adult to live at home with elderly parents or grandparents and everyday I feel so guilty that she has to work beyond retirement because of me. When I say I tried everything to get better, so she can have her home back to herself and live a proper retirement, so I could be the one to take care of her like she took care of me... I did. Some things even almost took my life in the process because every risk known to those treatment plans happened, in my case. Now that there aren't any options left except for pain management and wheelchair use.... I feel useless and like a burden to her. Which is the worst feeling in the world. Some days I wish I hadn't really lived through sepsis. The doctors said had I was literally 1 or 2 hours away from being comatose. But my grandma (she's a nurse) saw the signs and rushed me to the ER. Even chewed out the in-take nurses to take me back despite the packed waiting room. I try to make sure she knows how much I love and appreciate her. But I also know it will never be enough. Take care of yourself. Don't make stupid decisions like I did. Stay safe. You never know how much of your health and able-bodied life you take for granted until you suddenly lose it. And it happens so fast.

Gotta agree with this lol. I'd understand under certain (very small chances) of scenarios. My father lost my siblings and I when we were kids. That's another story that no one needs to hear, but his mother adopted us. He moved back in into a shed made into a bedroom about 5 months ago I'd say. He work for my adoptive father in a family owned business after he got fired (for a mistake his partner made) from a bigger mechanic company. He moved down to be closer to us. He had a few job offers, but turned them down. He lived in a city about 2 hours away to get away from my mom btw. It really hurt him with the divorce and such, and I understand completely. He still has to pay rent until end of November up in the city where his roommates and him lived due to his contract, so he is 30 technically living with his parents, but he is moving out at the end of the year. So, this is my example of a scenario where it is okay. Us kids enjoy having our father around, and my adoptive parents love it too. We are happier and a more loving family because of this.

He was 42 and lived in the upstairs of his dad's house and told me, "I get food stamps & dad gives me $100 a week to help him out"(run him to the store & drs appointments). His dad passed away years ago. He blew 80k in a life insurance policy on dumb shit & lap dances. Now he's 57 and just living off his mentally challenged brother's SSI checks. I believe he has schizophrenia and he IS truly unable to work NOW. He's reaching out to me because I think he is desperately lonely & wants SOMEBODY to believe his delusions. This guy is such a moocher, but I can also say there are times when it’s appropriate to stay with your parents a bit longer (not as long as him mind you). For those who have extreme disabilities they may never leave. Some of my siblings are the exact example of this, as they’ll be under my parents guardianship their entire lives. Now I’m going to be 21 soon, but I’m still not sure when I’ll be able to leave. I have a couple of mental disabilities, but the biggest factor is my depression. I’m currently in a state where I’m not safe if I’m left by myself, my parents not wanting me to leave since I’d probably be dead a week into being gone. Other than disabilities and the like, there really is no excuse to mooch on your parents for this long.

I feel bad for the mom mostly. The mom needs to stand up for herself and the grown man, if he is doing this for 20 years he has no gut to hurt his own mother. God bless the mother for such a sweet heart.

Honestly because of where I live it's not out of the norm for adults to live with their parents now. However to act like your a teenager and actually 45 plus not look after yourself and your mum is not normal. I moved out of home at 17 but had to move back because of a lack of housing. But I pay rent, buy my own things, cook, clean (I haaaate cleaning). However I'm currently on acc because my job physically broke me down.
