General practice in Unani medicine, a traditional healing system rooted in Greco-Arabic knowledge, emphasizes balance and holistic care. Unani practitioners, known as Hakims, diagnose and treat illnesses based on Mizaj (temperament), which involves assessing the balance of four bodily humors: blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile. Health is seen as a result of harmony among these humors, and imbalance leads to disease.
Unani treatment includes a variety of approaches:
1. Diet and lifestyle regulation (Ilaj bil Ghiza): Nutrition and lifestyle changes are crucial in restoring health.
2. Pharmacotherapy (Ilaj bil Dawa): Herbal medicines and natural substances are prescribed to address imbalances.
3. Regimental therapy (Ilaj bil Tadbeer): Techniques like cupping, massage, leech therapy, and exercises are employed to purify the body.
4. Surgery (Ilaj bil Yad): Though not as central as modern medicine, minor surgeries are performed when necessary.
Unani practice also emphasizes prevention and maintaining balance, focusing on environmental factors, personal habits, and emotional well-being to sustain health.
