Dr Rhodes Operates On A Panda | Chicago Med

Dr Rhodes is Chicago Zoo's last resort to saving their panda .
Season 2 Episode 11 "Graveyard Shift"
Everyone feels the effects of working the graveyard shift. As the psych resident on call, Dr. Reese is forced to make multiple death notifications to patients' families. Much to Tate's dismay, April gets pulled into working an extra shift. Also, Sharon calls Dr. Rhodes to the hospital to tend to a panda bear that needs surgery and Dr. Halstead is shadowed by a resident, only to find out that he has been intoxicated while on shift. Connor is called in to operate on a panda.

Actually in very specific cases, specialists can perform procedures at the request of a vet. In this case there was a vet present so this was legal.

No it is not. You would need to have Fellowship as a veterinary surgeon. Not to mention all the hygiene issues you would have in the hospital. You'd have to quarantine the whole wing and throw away all the equipment. Plus the panda's weight would probably break some of the equipment and the face masks and other equipment wouldn't fit. I mean cutting through a panda's chest is not exactly easy either.

I’m not a doctor but I’m a med.tech. I wouldn’t even dare to do phlebotomy on my dogs even a vet taught me how once. I wasn’t trained for animal care. I’m trained to do human BLS but I had a hard time locating pulse on a healthy dog & cat. This is so unrealistical. A vet can do a surgery while a human cardio surgeon can supervise.

Technically, we analyzed blood from dogs & cats but it always a challenge to us because we don’t know anything about normal results nor how to read & analyze the blood works or any blood fluids. We don’t know how to proceed. Pandas are endangered species & closely monitored & authorities would just let a human doctor to give medications without dosage supervision from the vet. They plan without further tests & charts & proceeded as is. Well, this is fiction alright.
