The facts of science, scientific techniques and technologies are real enough. But, the philosophy of materialism that governs conventional scientific thinking is an act of faith grounded in a 19th-century ideology. It is time to set science free. In this webinar, we dialogued with Dr. Rupert Sheldrake on all things consciousness. Does it exist beyond the brain? Where did our ideas on consciousness originate from? How do we move beyond it?
This webinar was held in celebration of the relaunch of The Rupert Sheldrake Course, now available for purchase on-demand.
0:00 - Opening
1:49 - What is materialist science? How is it a limiting worldview?
10:15 - The history of modern science, and why it's relevant
22:41 - The development of consciousness studies
37:37 - Consciousness, technology and AI
48:44 - Could we integrate consciousness into mainstream science?
56:48 - Quantum theory and consciousness
58:53 - Closing invitation

It's fascinating to explore the intense immense fractal that your imagination can play with. I like that you observe (and use the words) that it has no parameters. I think this is truth and means that we truly have so much to learn and try with our natural consciousness and Being, separate from any equations and parameters.

Consciousness is very well understood and is validated in Buddhism. It is very scientific and the analysis is highly developed. Buddha's expertise is the mind - consciousness. Sheldrake knows this; I've listened to him have discussions with Buddhist scholars on the subject. Quantum physics agrees with Buddhism in terms of the true nature of reality; phenomena are what how they appear to us.

Thank you! Materialism is mortally wounded, and will not revive. Mr. Sheldrake is doing a necessary service. Panpsychism doesn’t seem as comprehensive to me as non-dual idealism- advaita Vedanta or Kastrup’s analytic idealism. That said, we must never throw out the objective, rational grounding of the science of the enlightenment. I would far rather live in a world where everything must be empirically verifiable, than in one in which anyone can claim he is God’s messenger and do horrible things under that banner. Still, the most horrific things ever done on earth were the work men in the 20th century who were complete atheists.

27:10 On “cognitive neuroscience.” I’ve deeply studied this since the 70s. You are the first I’ve heard call it a “computer model.” To the contrary, it integrates what psychology learned in behaviorism with the psychology of the thinking mind, with cognition. None of my professors or colleagues in behavioral neurology or, as it’s now called, neuropsychology use the computer metaphor. Understanding how the brain itself functions, the purpose of each part and chemical, leads one not to mechanism but to awe. And has also lead to helping suffering humans better understand themselves to develop a more balanced consciousness. In the 20th century Psychology (separate from Freudianism) began with behaviorism, yes. That’s body. Found that insufficient and so proceeded to the cognitive. That’s mind. Found that incomplete and so proceeded to the affective with studies of Emotional Intelligence. That’s emotion. At the same time since the 70s Transpersonal Psychology evolved. That’s soul. Body, mind, emotion, soul-spirit. All examined, looked at intelligently with a passion for understanding and alleviating mental-emotional-spiritual suffering. Nothing mechanistic or detached from nature about it. Rather, the panoply of God’s physical-emotional-mental-spiritual being called human elicits only profound awe and humility. We acknowledge the replication issue and point attention to basic statistical principles starting with the primacy of validity and reliability, defined by their correct mathematical meaning. In a few words, yes, poor research is done and published before replication studies. Well, call us human and castigate our imperfections. One cannot change what one does not know about. Positive bias for decades? For centuries? Sir, you are ignoring all the times negative results have been published, all the times long-lived researchers have publicly corrected/updated their own previous work. I just read a negative results study this week. I see your intent and appreciate your efforts but a superficial view of modern science and of Psychology in particular is misleading, scientifically insufficient, and spiritually painful.

It's not my place to make a determination of what consciousness is or how to measure when it begins and ends. But I know that our neural system, albiet a critical element in our existence, it certainly isn't the only one. Our microbiome composition is critical to our function and survival likewise. For every one eukaryotic (membrane bound nucleus) human cell, there is 1.3 prokaryotic (no membrane bound nucleus) types. Which raises the question, is it our brain that makes our decisions or does/can it simply react to the needs of the collective microbial processes? Because after all, toxins dissipate and genetics replicate. We go to drink at a party because we socialize and receive enrichment without there being any underlying health benefits. You don't have to read too much further to realize that our mind/brain/consciouness makes us do some very strange things.

Everything is made up of the “stuff” of consciousness. The physical Universe “is” consciousness. The “force” behind the universe is the same force that fires the neurons is my brain. For example, I couldn’t write here that I have a conscious mind unless it forced it on my brain to communicate it. The universe is an information system made up of the stuff of consciousness with this force behind it which causes the.apparent solidity of the universe. Anyway, that's my theory.

A machine is made to do practical things, and that's all it can do. A life can do practical things AND it can do spiritual things and create more life, so the idea of being "just machines" seems pitifully inadequate a metaphor for life, as well as the universe itself which does much as life does. Maybe they are the same thing? Science seems to want to think of us more as "devices" rather than beings. But this is not at all to say I'm anti--science. Just the opposite. Mainly I hope for a re-animated , lively, vital and more profoundly CURIOUS exploratory science.

I believe space was completely empty, but GOD (total consciousness) and (total energy) decided to create in this space. Without consciousness) there is no awareness or knowledge! Without energy nothing can be created or even happen! So this force had to be the Creator. This GOD is so powerful only has to will something (think) and it is. God controls every aspect of being. So a second to GOD COULD BE ETERNITY! THIS ALL IS A SINGLE THOUGHT IN THE MIND OF GOD ALMIGHTY!
