Dr. Ryan Lucas is a paediatric registrar and Kawasaki Disease researcher. He completed his medical training in Sydney, and is currently undertaking a PhD on the epidemiology and management of Kawasaki Disease in Australia at The University of Sydney.

Very clear and informative presentation. Easy to follow with small breaks in between the numbers and theory with anecdotes/experience from practice. I do believe every parent should see this, such that they get a clue about what to do when their kids are having issues, whatever they may be. Feed the body and brain well, and more critically so, during development.

Having lived in Australia for sixty years I can state quite categorically state the rules for eating in this country are disgusting. What the hell ever happened to natural food. You don't take fat out of milk and you don't tell people to only eat packaged light foods. The majority of the whole foods on that list are full of sugar.

Kids’ health starts with the mum during pregnancy. Low carb, high protein and fat seems the healthiest way. Also, protein and fat lead to satiety. Great info here. 👏

I'm on a Keto carnivore diet. This is where you don't exclusively eat meat, I still eat some occasional vegetables and nuts and a very watered down grapefruit juice as a drink. My worst vice is ginger. What I have found in sticking to this diet is that Unless I make every thing my self I will be flooded with hidden sugars and carbs. If you read the ingredients label on a packet of sausages from the supermarket Meat is occasionally the smallest ingredient with various fillers and sugars making up the majority. The only ingredients needed are meat and spices including salt and you may want a bread crumb to space out the meat but I'm sure there are no carb alternatives to bread crumbs that would suit , I don't know if it has always been this way but I have noticed it more and more in more and more products to the point that you will need to go to an independent butcher to get a cut of meat that hasn't been injected with sugar water.

Congratulation, Dr Lucas ! You bring to your profession a sense of duty, care, commonsense and compassion. you have given a clear, precise-as-it-can-get-in-a-messy world, and brave talk - From my past experience, including 58 years on insulin, not as medical opinion or advice: 1) I would add that a dietary history at some early stage is important and a home visit to look in the home fridge. 2) Another effect of insulin much emphasised by Dr Phinney is that high insulin levels influence the kidney to retain sodium, and, given the plethora of highly processed food with added salt, some weight gain and 'bloating" ? ankle swelling maybe due to excess water and sometimes BP is raised (not sure in a 6 years old)? Similarly, i am guessing - reduction in carb intake and thus insulin levels may at some stage occasion lowered body sodium (constipation, dizziness, pallor, etc). NSAIDs block this effect of insulin 4) sodium also interacts with fat cells ( (see Ben Bikman 2024 video on Salt), 5) there is a theory that a high carb breakfast leads to higher insulin response (as measured) and later to hypoglycaemia perhaps leading to misbehaviour etc around morning and afternoon/after school behaviour issues so choice of lower carb options at breakfast and mid-morning and mid-to late afternoon may become more important than realised 6)much fibre in food products has added sugar to improve its taste e.g. baked beans, sauce etc 7) the Federal Govt in its 'wisdom' gives tax breaks to food companies to discount the cost of their processed foods - such food ends up in agency-managed donations for poverty-stricken families - unless that changes the impoverishes/disadvantaged and society are facing an up-hill battle 8) you rightly name food security and preservation as important issues - if only some form of food stamp was made available for those in need, including rural and remote First Peoples to obtain tinned meat, fish and dried meats (but manufacturers of beef jerky are too fond of making a profits, methinks) 9) see virtahealth.com: Resources: Science and Research: Why humans do not need dietary carbohydrate to thrive and in the video: Phinney: 2014 - Optimising weight and health with LCHF (Part 1) - first 10 to 15 minutes, Phinney talks about the Inuit/laplanders, Masai and others plus the experiment with Stephannson 10) paper: Lennerz et al: Pediatrics, 2018 Management of Type 1 Diabetes with Very Low Carbohydrate Diets - showing normal growth in these children and teens 11)video; Lennerz: 2023: Published Research on Carnivore, Ketogenic and other low carbohydrate diets in T1D - the biased reasons expounded by ISPAD and AAP to obstruct prescription of low and very low carb diets in diabetic children and teens is thoroughly debunked. The litmus test (unfortunately) would be: can these obstructions stand up in a court of law? ( paediatricians have been known here and o/s to report parents who have placed their diabetic child/teen on a low or very low carb diet to child services.

I don't know about Australia. In the UK people get cash for their family allowance and unemployment. A big a big help to pay bills and eat better food, is to Stop smoking, Stop alcohol, Stop taking illegal drugs, and what may surprise people, Stop buying designer clothes. Stop taking holidays and taking out the full range of Sky products. Why should the tax payer, pay for these things? When my finance changed I stopped the smoking, drinking, holidays. Never did take illegal drugs, or had designer clothes and only had basic Sky. I used to do school assembly, up to year 6 in one of these 'poor' high unemployment areas. We asked the kids how did you feel when you lost something. One kid said he got very upset when he lost the charger and lead to his IPhone. There were the 2 of us with our cheap Motos from the supermarket. Plus we accepted adds to make our bills cheaper. It was something like £4.00 pcm. The only ones surprised at this kid having an IPhone was us.
