The "dark satanic mills" line was a reference to a poem by 19th century English poet William Blake, which is now most known as the hymn "Jerusalem". In that poem he was explicitly talking about the Industrial Revolution in the UK. Shashi Tharoor is incredibly well-read.

this is one of the most celebrated speech/debate of Shashi Tharoor. also, the textile he talks about in his speech--muslin, was said to be extremely soft and thin, but sadly the textile exists only in certain museums, cause nobody in today's world knows how to make that textile anymore :(

Im incredibly happy you guys made this video, because such kind of things gets forgotten India and Indians haven’t forgotten the 200 years of raj and there is a lot of animosity in their hearts but we can’t blame the country now for what happened in the past. It’s all different people, different government and different circumstances . We do forgive but don’t forget though . What we can expect however is some degree of reparations to offset what happened . Of course it’s impossible to offset everything - you cant pay a price for lives lost . But Britain still owns the kohinoor diamond which itself is valued $50 Bn., tipu sultans seat and a lot more in their museums. What’s right should be done right . Indians won’t and will never forget . But we’ve always been strong regardless . Even after all the looting and driving the country to one of the poorest in the world , we’ve fought back since then to be one of the fastest developing countries in the world.

There are a number of priceless artifacts from all over the world that are being held in European museums. It's one thing when objects are donated or gifted, but a lot of the artifacts were stolen during the colonial times. The countries now ask for the artifacts back, but that same argument about reparations is brought up: that the countries "wouldn't be able to maintain the objects safely". The British Museum is known to house many artifacts that countries have asked to be returned, famously the Elgin Marbles, which were originally from Greece. I think we all can understand how ridiculous it is to imply that Greece of all places can't take care of its artifacts - it shows clearly that the argument is not being made in good faith. I think of the thousands of people in the native countries of these artifacts that will never get the chance to see them, and it makes me sad. The Kohinoor diamond that is the centrepiece of the crown of England's monarch also belongs to India, and the UK government claims it was gifted despite the Indian government asking for its return for years now.

Mr Tharoor can be a duplicitous person but he's got a bit of respect for India than others in his political party. For example, he goes to Britain to express how Britain looted while in India he's part of a party that's looted from it's people post-independence and continues to needlessly criticize any important reformation that the current ruling dispensation tries to bring about. Compare this to the very leader of his party, who at the drop of a hat would go to Britain and America to bad mouth about India in any given instance.

The amount of corruption that runs in indian society today is unimaginable. I agree with Mr. Tharoor that reparations are owed but if Britain truly wants to pay their debt off they should instead open NGOs on ground level and work towards uplifting the poor and needy children in India. That will actually bless their coming generations for a lifetime.

It would just open up more doors for them to take advantage of us, like the East India Company. I don't care how corrupt our government is, I would not throw away the freedom that our ancestors paid for by their blood by inviting the British back to build a stronghold in our country. I also would not wanna give them the chance to say that they "helped" our country, as if out of the generosity of their hearts. They owe reparations, they should pay what they owe with humility, without telling us what we should do with our own property.

How would you guarantee that said NGOs wouldn't be forcibly taken over by government-sponsored criminals and the money diverted to the pockets of the local politicians? You have NGOs in India already working for the uplift of vulnerable people across Indian society. How are they getting on? And to cut the smack talk for a minute, it's a lovely idea that our two nations could build a peaceful bridge from our shared past to our shared future. I often wonder whether I could take my skills, my knowledge and my personal assets and bring them to India. To invest in a small business that values its workers and affects little but necessary change, one step at a time. Imagine if hundreds, even thousands of India's foreign grandchildren and great-grandchildren did this. Could we, collectively, by your side, build an India that will be a leader of the future world? And then I read reports like what happened last week in Kolkata to that poor doctor, and any hope is diminished. Why would I leave the safety and freedom of my homeland to come to the land of my parents? There was a reason they left in the first place.

The "MEASLY" debt that Britain owes us is around 45 TRILLION DOLLARS. And by the way, India has surpassed Britain in GDP and total worth in 2023 itself, to be the 5th largest economy in the world, behind US, China, Germany and Japan. So, technically, factually and truly, India is much more in worth than Britain. So my statement stands accurate. Britain won't be able to pay our debt if it sold itself.
