Because GDP changes over the years, it’s not like there’s a set amount of money money every year. Indas GDP in 1700 was 90 billion USD which is about 24.4% of the worlds GDP at that time. As for why they didn’t use US dollar as data is because the US dollar didn’t exist untill the end of 1700’s. He has a very valid point on colonialism, that is the main reason the Americans revolted against the British empire.

Because it effectively describes how sluggish India's growth was compared to rest of the world during british rule. GDP figures in dollars will be Increasing with time anyways. For example UK's per capita gdp in 1960 was 1300 USD, India's GDP per capita now in 2500 USD, that does not mean that India now is doing better than Uk was in 1960
