I'm biased, since I have lived most of my life in the Waterloo Region and went to that University, but I think Dr McGill gives great general advice. If my back gets sore (I'm 67 so it can for sure), I use that idea of establishing a small pain free area and slowly expanding it. Years ago, I would more likely try to 'stretch it out' or something. His book 'Back Mechanic' is a good basic book on back care.

1:26:48 tarlov cyst; Tarlov cysts (also known as meningeal cysts or perineural cysts) are fluid-filled sacs that are usually found at the bottom of the spine (the sacrum). The cysts appear in the roots of the nerves that grow out of the spinal cord. Shock or trauma of the spine, or exertion, can cause spinal fluid in the cysts to build up

Stuart & Brian are a great source for information (which one is the Batman & which is the Robin???). Did anyone else notice that while talking to this spine specialist, Dave seemed to be sitting up extra tall the whole episode?

I love listening to Stu even though he says shit like this that goes straight over my head -- “Bone is a peso electric material. Its made up of ions of magnesium and calcium in a latus that forms a crystalline structure”

I can't explain why, but my brain loves Stu Mcgill's voice and speaking style. If I smoked he could do a hypnotic video that would have me quit in a day lol... its a very pleasant style and I love his Canadian accent ("aBOAT" for "about")... this is even though a lot of the terms he uses I don't understand ("You've got a delineation where the hydraulics are posterior to the spinal cord and vulgas, yet it acts as a sheer torque mechanism and a sort of medieval cantalever action occurs... fascinating, isn't it?")

Since I was a kid I've been susceptible to that ASMR brain tingle and when he whispers into a microphone "he'll have an awful looking squat" my brain goes into high tingle for some reason -- I'm referencing his video about how deep squats are genetically determined@@rajendraambekar4028

I suffer from a L5 disc bulge. I saw a McGill Master Clinician for over a year. Spent thousands of dollars. Read all his books. Had a video call with Brian Carroll. Practiced his method consistently, daily for two years. It did absolutely nothing for my pain and injury. His master clinician couldn’t even identify the cause of my pain after countless visits. Very disappointing as he was my last hope.

eh...no one thing works for everyone. I tried it too and it didn't really help me a ton. Eventually a discectomy helped more than anything but the McGill method is worth a try. Certain aspects of his method are very helpful even if they don't completely get you out of pain. Knowing problematic positions is and will be helpful to everyone with back pain IMO.

@@johnnybeefumI agree. Everything is worth a try to avoid surgery. I have tried them all. The issue I have with him is that in all of his interviews he sells himself and his method as having the ability to cure anyone with lower back pain. His book The Gift of Injury with Brian Carroll is a good example of this. The extensive injury that they claim Brian Carroll had and was able to rehab in just a year raises many doubts and questions. I and many others are suffering from a simple disc bulge and can’t get pain free while Brain Carroll claims he had a shattered sacrum with multilevel disc herniations and not only got pain free but squatted 1300lbs. I just don’t buy it. Especially after being treated by a McGill master clinician with absolutely no relief to my pain. He’s just like all the others on KZbin trying to make a buck out of our suffering and desperate cry for help. What’s worse is when their method fails to make you better, they point the finger at you and claim that you didn’t follow their protocol which is not true. They refuse to acknowledge their failures and make it seem as if they can cure anyone. My spine surgeon was right.

So are you completely pain free after the surgery
@johnnybeefum
@johnnybeefum 8 ай бұрын
@@dino24591 not sure if your question is for me but my remaining lower back pain is very mild at this point. I still avoid deadlifts and barbell squats because I think they would flare me up. The side that was operated on is for all intents and purposes, pain free. The side that was not operated on still has some pain but it's mild and pretty manageable. Like I said, the microdiscectomy was the most effective thing I ever did for my lower back.

Damn thats a shame. I'm in a similar boat. Read all his books, listened to every interview I can find. Some of his ideas have helped me, but no amount of the big 3 did anything for my pain. And If they don't help you, you're probably just doing them incorrectly.

Dr McGill is SO beloved by so many physically powerful humans if anyone ever touched him (first off he'd fight them like a trapped badger -- but put that aside) the cops would end up finding pieces of that person throughout the Canadian woods lol
