Dr. Uttam Babu Shrestha ⁠| अनि, अब with Sudheer Sharma | Ep.18

Dr. Uttam Babu Shrestha is an environmental scientist and the founding director of the Global Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies (GIIS). With a Ph.D. in Environmental Science from the University of Massachusetts Boston, USA, Dr. Shrestha has cultivated a distinguished academic and research career. He also holds two master’s degrees- one in Geographic Information Technology from Northeastern University, USA, and another in Botany from Tribhuvan University, Nepal.
Dr. Shrestha has an extensive background in academia, having worked at renowned institutions such as Harvard University, the University of Massachusetts Boston, the University of Maine in the USA, the Technical University of Munich in Germany, and the University of Southern Queensland in Australia. After his international academic career, he returned to Nepal and co-founded GIIS, a leading research institution based in Kathmandu.
His work has earned him numerous accolades, including the Outstanding Graduate Student Award during his Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts Boston in 2014 and the Graduate Academic Excellence Award for his Master’s degree at Northeastern University in 2008.
Dr. Shrestha's research interests are centered on climate change, biodiversity conservation, land-use change, and the human use of natural resources. His prolific research output includes over 60 peer-reviewed papers, a book, several book chapters, and numerous articles in popular media. His work has been featured in the journal Nature and covered by major international outlets such as The Atlantic, The New York Times, National Geographic, and Scientific American.
In addition to his scientific endeavors, Dr. Shrestha is an avid traveler, an award-winning photographer, and a regular columnist for Kantipur Daily.
