The restriction in the DR's exhaust is actually in the header pipe. The weld that attaches the flange to the pipe is HUGE and restricts the inside diameter of the stock pipe. Grinding that weld down on the inside of the pipe is the no-cost fix.
@rupertsuzuki33766 ай бұрын
The restriction that ticks me off is the joint between the head pipe and the intermediate pipe… Buy a big tube header, buy a performance exhaust….and it’s all still choked by the necked down factory joint…

The TM40 upgrade was the best thing I ever did to my 2009 DR hands down. I put a lot of work into that bike....suspension, exhaust, Bars, tank, and seat......and the TM 40 was the winner.Sadly....I sold that 09 and bought a quad. Now I'm starting over with my 2015 DR.....the TM 40 carb is tops on the list.

thanks for this video, you are absolutely correct when you say there is not much info about this conversion. i have spent this summer modding my airbox, exhaust, and air filter, and cannot for the life of me seem to get the fuel mix correct with the jet kit in my '12 dr. i went with the JD jetting kit, put in two different main jets, used just about all the slots on the needle and still get some hesitation to the point where i am considering dyno-tuning at the local motorcycle shop to finally get it out of my amateur hands for the tune of $300. on a whim i called procycle and they said that that is just the nature of the stock vacuum carby, and the only real fix is to go pumper. i am leaning in that direction now because the difference is (about) 100 bucks more and seems more guaranteed than the dyno-tune which may not even fix the issue. i also like that they take into account your existing mods and jet the carby before they even send it to you, although it seems like they kinda missed the mark with yours. great drone footy!

I bought a 2005 DR650 that had been stored for 10 years. This upgrade made sense to me since I waa gonna be doing much cleaning to the carb on the bike (it had been stored with gas in it). The 450 was a bit steep IMO but any time I start to question my judgement I just take the bike for a ride and amazes again at the power delivery. The pump makes all the difderence in the world IMO.

Should be the number 1 mod first. Maybe except for a good sounding exhaust. CV carbs wait for engine vacuum to lift the carb slide. Hesitation. Pumper carb slides lift with the twist of the throttle. No hesitation. Totally different ways to put down power

Hi John, Nice video, I have a 2017 DR650 with a TM40. I bought the carb off Ebay and jetted it. What jetting are you running and what needle position? Just heard your running a 155. I live near Frederick MD. and PA line. I've been tweaking the jetting to minimize the backfire on decel and still retain the punch. I'd agree on the street it's not much different except at slow speeds where it is much smoother and pulls without lugging. I did the same mod on my DR350. Can't stand the CV carbs, it's kinda like turbo on a car. Too much lag. I ride Michaux frequently. Where in MD are you?

Well after you install the Procycle 790 kit with a worked head and this pumper carb it should rip wheelies easily.
@rupertsuzuki33766 ай бұрын
Procycle kit. Hayabusa exhaust, big tube header, 15/43. Carb is worth every penny. I don’t think it makes anymore peak power but it is massively more drivable in the low to mid range. Economy, without being overly OCD about it seems the same. It was bolt on plug and play, not the continual tweaking trying to find the best setup like on the factory BST. I wouldn’t say it was the best modification to the DR (gas tank), doesn’t even make my top 5 (tank/seat/tires/skid plate/springs), but it does make my top ten - so far (ergo’s(bars &pegs)/luggage/dustbin shield/ mirror extenders/TM40). Good video, thanks.

Great video! I have the TM40 also, plus the hi-comp piston, and the 223 cam. If you have the money, know-how, and time to do the project, it is well worth it. The carb by itself, like you said, is an improvement, mainly because of the greatly improved throttle response and smoothness at lower Rpm's, giving the bike a much wider spread of power.

The header pipe is the MAIN restriction in the DR. Adding just a pipe does nothing. No need to replace the header pipe, but if you take it off, you will see the header flange is welded to the pipe on the inside. Sometimes the weld is so thick, there is literally more than a half inch of diameter that is blocking airflow. Take the pipe off, weld the flange on the outside, then grind all the weld out of the inside. I have seen this one mod add 3rwhp on the dyno.

@kentuckyjustice14083 жыл бұрын
I paid $85 for a jetting kit from Pro Cycle (150 jet) and got the same results: quick throttle response, goes through the gear ranges like crap through a goose and feels like it can just breath better. As for that carb breather tube... no mods necessary. You just have to make sure it remains routed like it came out from the factory. If it get's close to your air intake, it will fight your breather box for air and bog down a lot.
@PracticalTacticalSheepDog3 жыл бұрын
I seriously doubt you got "the same" results. The BST40 sucks balls. Only reason I haven't swapped yet is the cost of a TM40. Seems like every few thousand miles my bike starts running like crap and I have to take the carburetor apart and clean the slide. Surges terribly in strong crosswinds. Surges at high speeds. No matter how much fine tuning the BST40 always seems to have flat spots in the rev range.
@hegemonictrader45 Жыл бұрын
Hmm, I got much improved results. I bought a 2023 DR650 and installed procycles 150 main jet and needle on the 3rd knotch. Air box still stock, DG V2 slip on exhaust and fuel mixture screw not even 1 1/8 turns out. Huge improvement through the whole range! I can go down and cruise at 45mph in 5th gear without bike so low in rpms that I need to downshift. First gear can chug along at 5mph without having to keep blipping throttle to keep revs up or always feathering clutch so bike wont stall. I just have one minor blip I need to tune in yet but a huge improvement by at least 50% imo. Sorry you didn’t get same results.

I have been on the fence about the pumper as there is nothing on the power gain from the re-jet to the pumper and it sounds like from yours it would not be worth it. As a side note my re-jet on my stock carb runs pretty damn good never a problem with the breather tube placed in the carbs vortex. Gamet36 had the issue and corrected it by simply moving it farther away. He has a piece up on it, thx

if your bike runs goods with modded stock carb keep it unless your really into getting every drop of power out of the bike. singed strictly my opinion.

Hey Brandt, what you will mainly gain from the pumper carb is a serious improvement at very low revs. I watch your videos (which are awesome by the way), and from the looks of the type of tight forest trails you ride, the pumper could be a benefit. How much of a benefit who knows, because you already handle that bike better than most people. I guess it's just a matter of preference; some people like the pumper, and some don't feel a need for it.

Header Pipe on a DR650 is the main point of restriction. Simply adding a slip on does nothing for this bike. I am speaking from first hand knowledge. I have moded dozens of these DR’s. & DRZ’s. The head flange on the DR is welded on the inside. Restricting the header pipe to only 1 1/4” pipe. If your not going to buy a new head pipe, you need to weld the flange from the outside, then grind the weld out from the inside. It’s a huge, huge difference.

I will say it is doable, you will just need to be more observant of fuel level and not get on it hard. It gives a big boost in power which is nice, and honestly can be scary at times when not loaded down. I would say it helps with pulling a heavy load though.
