My first two houseplants were baby dracaenas.... I thought I was buying grass lol. My marginata is more forgiving than my compacta when it comes to water. Turns out the compacta hates my tap water. I wasn't sure if I was under or overwatering when its leaves started to turn yellow, but when I switched to DI water things improved. So if changing the amount of water doesn't help, and repotting doesn't help either, try changing the type of water you use.

This was very helpful. I am having this issue
@taymc4072 жыл бұрын
@@heychunkybutt2010 I found that the compacta gets root bound much faster than other trees (the marginata, ficus, etc). Eventually, my compacta did kick the bucket and I couldn't figure out why, until I took it out of its pot and saw how bad the root-bound issue was. I had repotted it earlier that year but clearly didn't choose a large enough pot. Don't be afraid to bump it to a larger pot than you think it needs, those broad leaves are great at supporting large root systems for such a compact plant.
@Buckeye_4_Life_2 жыл бұрын
What's DI water..? I use filtered water for my Janet Craig. I've had it for a couple years now and can't get it to grow at all. My house is a bit on the dry side also, even though I have a humidifier.
@taymc4072 жыл бұрын
@@Buckeye_4_Life_ Sorry about that, I meant distilled water. DI water is deionized water, I got my wires crossed and said the wrong thing. DI water is used for cleaning lab equipment or running experiments. As for your plant, it might be a light issue. If you do decide to use distilled water just know that it eventually flushes all the nutrients out of the soil, so you'll need to add fertilizer weakly, weekly. Like 1/4th what the dosage calls for. Distilled water + fertilizer only helps with brown tips if your tap water is causing issues for your plant. It doesn't necessarily promote growth (though fertilizer can help with growth if used during the growing season). If your tap water is fine then you don't need to buy distilled water, just give the plant a little more light and/or start fertilizing it during the grow season. A little fertilizer consistently is better than a lot of fertilizer all at once as too much can burn the roots. Hope that helps :)

Have you seen the variegated Dracaena? They look very cool. I think these may be related to bamboo somehow. I do like the idea of how they grow-out with a stalk over time. Any ideas on how to make these grow out into bushy patches as opposed to growing a single stem with a bush on top?
@TropicalPlantParty5 жыл бұрын
Hello! They are just called "bamboo" because of the rings on their trunks. To get them to be bushy would be complicated, it would be easier to purchase the un-altered dracaena sanderiana, which is often what is used for the lucky "bamboo." Otherwise you would have to purchase the lucky bamboo you like and grow the foliage out until it is large enough to cut off and root into their own pots. Once the growth is about 6 inches long they should be ok to cut off and translpant. 😊

Trying to identify a plant I used to see in malls and even had at one time - very short leaves bunched together like these but grew in a long snaking pattern that got several feet long, little or no bare "trunk" to speak of just a long continuous twisting climb. Years ago it was marketed as Malaysian Dracaena but that doesn't match most of what I'm seeing in searches today. Could this be the same plant? I've seen Dranet Craigs that had a spread that was well over a foot wde. Ones I'm after were less than 10" or so in dia. but around four feet long and *winding* . Can't recall seeing these growing wild in Puerto Rico during my time there but Wiki says Compacta is from E. Africa. Can you help straighten me (not the plants) out? The closest I can find to what I'm trying to describe is one called D. Fragrans. A bit longer leaves but the same continuous, winding pattern. And D. Reflexa has the smaller leaves but in some examples are variegated. All resemble this except for the mature product which is tall and covered in leaves.

@TropicalPlantParty4 жыл бұрын
Love the lemon surprise! Brown spots can be caused from a variety of issues. Insects, too much light, too much water, diseases... that's a tough one to answer bc of all of the possibilities. Is it staying consistently moist? Some dracaenas, many of them actually can go a bit more on the dry side indoors, even though they can take and usually like a lot of moisture.

You mentioned this is from Puerto Rico. I thought these are natives of Africa. I bought a “Dracaena Deremensis” but it states it’s from Africa. I’m trying to find proper care for the exact type ... wondering if the Janet Craig and Lisa are the same. Please help. Thanks 🌱 🪴

I love the Rikkis! I have been trying to find one for a few months. They are supposed to more sturdy and forgiving than the typical "corn plant' dracaena. I want! 😊
