Cut off any of the branches
➡️Remove some of the lower leaves, so there are empty nodes that can grow roots
➡️Put the cutting in water
➡️Place next to a window, in bright indirect light
➡️Replace water weekly
➡️Once the roots get 1-2 inches long, you can pot in soil
I could have cut off a whole cane and propagated it, but I would've gotten only one plant. By cutting off branches from a single cane, I can get multiple plants from a single plant. There are also other ways to propagate a dracaena, but that will be the topic of another video :)
The other cutting I placed in soil. You can propagate any plant in soil or water, it doesn't make a lot of difference. You should do what you are more comfortable with. Try one approach, then the other, and see what works for you.
It took about 1.5-2 months to start seeing any roots on the dracaena in water.

Also please, what is the best soil mix for draceana marginata. Mine was my dad's who has passed away and its very important I can care for it. I've had it 2years already and it's still alive but its so thin and hardly produces leaves x

Increase the amount of light, that is the most important thing. Light is plant food! I have a blog post with the amounts of light needed for each plant:www.mrhouseplant.com/blog/what-is-bright-indirect-light-for-plants/ The amount listed for dracaena marginata in the column "optimal amount of light" is the bare minimum. If you can provide it with over 3,000 lux or even better 10,000 lux it will be sooo happy. Then you need to get the watering right. Only water once the soil has fully dried out to the bottom of the pot. Use a chopstick to check. In terms of a potting mix, not sure what you are using, but in most cases you should amend the potting mix you buy with some perlite, bark or another amendment. I also have a detailed blog post on the care for this plant, which I think you'll find useful: www.mrhouseplant.com/blog/dracaena-marginata-care-dragon-tree/

@MrHouseplant
@MrHouseplant Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry, I didn't get this. Why would you cut off all the leaves from your plant? If there is mold on the soil, it's a combination of a few things - insufficient light, poor air circulation and too frequent watering.

A few quick thoughts: 1) don't water until the soil has completely dried out, all the way to the bottom of the pot, use a chopstick to check 2) increase the amount of light (put in front of the brightest window), to increase photosynthesis, which will cause the soil to dry out faster (that's good, you don't want it staying wet for too long) 3) don't worry about losing 2 leaves. Older leaves will dry out and fall off, that's completely normal :) 4) Cut off the rotting/soft part of the stem, cut below, until you reach the firm tissue. Good luck!

I did this once before and it worked, but this time my cuttings did not grow roots and they died.. Can you help me?!
@MrHouseplant
@MrHouseplant 2 жыл бұрын
Not every propagation will be successful, that's normal. Just try again. There are a few things you can do to increase chances of success: 1) Increase light (use a light meter to measure) 2) If water propagating, use an air pump to provide oxygen, as this increases chances of success, and speeds up propagation 3) Use a heat mat. Increasing the temperature of the potting medium by 5 degrees will speed up propagation Good luck :)

Do you have success with stems with no leaves? I've tried twice and nothing happened. I left to dry out, the. Put some root hormone (rooting powder) and planted in cactus soil. I watered once a week. 4 months later. Not one root . Any advice please?
@MrHouseplant
@MrHouseplant 2 жыл бұрын
I've done it with some other plants. It's a veeery slow process and for success you need optimal conditions - light, propagation medium temperature and oxygen. Have you measured light and temperature? You could also try propagating in sphagnum moss as it's more porous than a regular potting mix. Also make sure the bottom side of the cutting is in the medium, so it can absorb moisture before roots develop
