A family friend who passed away a few years ago served on the Nevada. His job in battle was loading cordite charges into the breach of the after twin main turret, and during the duel with the German shore battery he popped the hatch and said they were so close to land he was sure the Germans had no issue with discerning exactly which solitary finger he was “saluting” them with... on Saturday nights, his off duty job was setting up and running the movie projector onboard. His name was Frank Cox, and he is missed... I only learned of his time serving on the Nevada shortly before his death, so I missed an opportunity to learn and retain history. All I know for sure is he, but most certainly the Nevada, may have very well saved the life of my step-father’s dad who was a Seabee pinned down by Japanese artillery and radioed for help, Nevada responding with indignation toward the mistreatment of the Naval Engineers by putting a pinpoint full salvo onto the battery. It was a decade after both had passed on and several years in between when I realized both stories were connected, just hearing one from the wife of Frank who fired the gun and from my late grandmother who knew the story of grandpa who was on the shore. They met once at my mom’s wedding, but neither had any idea they had met once before in 1945... just how things work out. Nevada truly deserved a chance to be preserved, but seeing how the Texas has been left to rot, all I can do is wonder and wish. Also, USS Nevada BB-36, is the only battleship whose hull number matched her state, Nevada being the 36th state in the Union.

USS Nevada has been my favorite US warship basically since I learned she existed as a child. Defiant and brutally tough--other ships survived the atomic bomb blasts, but when you consider Nevada was serving as the _target ship_, the fact that she both survived, and then survived a hammering by a ship almost thirty years younger than her, becomes exponentially more impressive.

Nevada covered herself in glory on the morning of December 7th. Trying to make it to the open sea whulr under constant air attack. She managed to claw down a few Japanese planes as a symbolic giant middle finger. Oklahoma never got a chance sadly. Nevada wasnt as famous as her two older cousins, Texas and Arkansas, in the shore bombardment missions. But her fire was accurate, and delivered on time. Shame she wasn't at Surigao strait in place of the Mississippi, that would have made that battle even more ironic.

Well if the Phillipenes had been delayed a couple of months as a couple of admirals had suggested (but was decided against) the Dragoon bombardment forces coming to the Pacific from the bombardment of southern France could have also been around. There was Nevada, Texas, New York, and Arkansas as well as one of the New Mexico's that was being refit at the time (Idaho iirc) joined them after they got to the west coast of the US. They also had quite a few cruisers and destroyers with them in particular 8" heavy cruisers. There could definitely have been a different surigao and Samar if it had been later.

Don't forget the crew because they also lived up to the motto and slogan. During the attack on Peral Harbor, a person was shot through the leg but refused to leave his AA Battery and three days later with his leg amputated, he returned to duty on the ship Nevada, plus while it was making its run for the ocean they rescued Arizona survivors. At the D-Day invasion, she was stationed at Utah beach and when helping the paratroopers and the 4th infantry division a loader broke his finger between two shells but the officer didn't notice till 2 hours and 10 minutes later then replaced him with another person. they were on of the only ships to be able to help the troops as the naval men rotated around and only slept up to an hour each and all that time she was right on target to where they needed her firepower. An example of this is that on June 8th a firing mission was called against a formation 90 tanks and 20 lorries, in 20 minutes the spotter told them that the fire was very effective and all the targets were destroyed or damaged and none getting away. Sorry this was long I'm just very affectionate so to speak about history I find very neat.

USS Oklahoma was actually salvaged, underwent partial repairs at Pearl Harbor, but sunk while being towed back to the mainland for more extensive repairs. This brought the total number of ships unrecoverable after the Pearl Harbor Attack at 3. USS Nevada's captain had her beached to prevent her being sunk in the channel that serves as the entrance to the harbor. She was one of the 18 ships that would be repaired and returned to service.

The USN was amazed to find out that armored warships with all hatches sealed are ludicrous on toast when it comes to taking atomic bomb hits. Your choices are blow it up underwater basically under the keel, or have a ground burst close enough that the core fireball hits it. Airbursts don't generate enough heat to melt the armor, just set things like decking and stuff on fire, and the over-pressure from a nuclear bomb is less than the effective 'hit' of an armor piercing shell. I think there was a World War 1 era *cruiser* in the Bikini Atoll tests that took both bombs and had to be torpedoed.

Nevada was the target for the first Crossroads test and was painted a red / orange colour so that she would stand out to the Bombardier on the B-29 that was suppose to drop an Air burst 20KT Fat Man A Bomb directly over her. The Bomb actually missed the aiming point by 1600 metres.

Slight note about the fitting of Oklahoma post-refit: Her casemate-mounted 5"/51s were moved up to the gunhouse, which only mounted 10 of the weapons. two of them were carried yet another deck higher, fore of the 5"/25s. Sometime before 1941 Oklahoma lost these two weapons. When she gained her 3"/50s two of them displaced the aforementioned 5"/51s. (She also had 8 Browning .50s fitted to platforms on her masts.) I am not as familiar with Nevada's exact fitting at the time of the attack, but it would make sense if a similar exchange was carried out, as the .50s can be seen in the photo of her beached after the attack.

Thing is, can they move the Nevada upstream from the mouth of the Colorado River at Baja Mexico to the destination resting place of Laughlin Nevada. @MakeMeThinkAgain5 жыл бұрын
Curiously, Drachinifel omitted the most widely known facts about the Nevada (because this is "class" and not "ship." But since I've started this...) The USS Nevada was the only BB to get underway during the Pearl Harbor raid and, by doing so risked blocking access to the harbor. It was very fortunate that she was able to beach herself before she sank in deeper water. This is a good thing to consider when you think about alternative histories where the USN ships are better prepared for the raid. If more ships had boilers fired, chances are the consequences would have been dire.

Ah, The twins. Well 2 of them anyway. Nevada and Oklahoma. California and Tennessee come to mind also. I am 3D modeling them for World of Warships, although the Communist Bastards most likely wont use them. LOL, thats ok, I can put them in my own game in the future. They were the oldest active Battleships at Pearl Harbor on Dec, 7. The Texas and New York were the oldest two Battleships in the Navy that day but neither was at Pearl when it was bombed. Nevada was the first to raise steam and attempt an escape from the harbor and almost ended up blocking the channel way but quick thinking on the part of her captain running her aground as she sank saved the ship and kept the through way clear for ship movement in the channel. If the water would have been 20 foot deeper the ship would probably been a total loss and had to been scrapped in place. Oklahoma really got the worst end of the stick receiving like seven torpedo hits all on one side that caused her to roll over to almost a full 180 degree list. The movie makes it look completely rolled over but it wasnt a complete 180. It was still bad enough though that around 34 men ended up trapped and dying inside her hull. As far as I know, these were the only 2 battleships in U.S. history that were built with the 10 main gun set up with the inner super firing high turrets carrying two barrels, whilst the lower ship end turrets carried the the 3 barrel arrangement. This was designed to save weight in the ships, and to slightly cut cost of their construction. It is also noted that these were the last 2 American Battleships to be propelled with 2 screws, and were the first to carry main turrets with the three main guns. So the main gun arrangement was also somewhat of a comparison study as it was considered to build the ships with 8 - 14 inch guns instead of 10, but was deemed that 8 guns would not be sufficient in that calibre, and would be a step backwards. It was partially true that the two gun turrets could be fired in a quicker manner than the three gun turrets could be, but sense the ship normally would fire the gun pairs or whole main battery at once for accuracy it was found that this was somewhat of a silly argument and that they should have mounted four turrets with the three gun arrangement. One of the only other countries to have battleships with this gun arrangement on their ships was Italy with some world war one ships that actually had 5 ships with 12.5 inch guns and having a center turret located in the midships area. In the interwar period these ships were modernized instead of Italy building new ships to replace them, and the center turrets were removed. There were 5 of these ships in 2 similar classes, however one ship had been scrapped so Italy ended up fielding four of these older battleships with the 10 - main gun set up. Back to Nevada and Oklahoma though. Again as stated Oklahoma only saw action on the morning of the harbor bombing and received a bitch slapping so fast that she and Arizona basically didn't even get a chance to put up their hands in their own defense. Luckily the Japanese didn't send more waves of planes in as they probably could have sunk or damaged every battleship in the harbor beyond repair as was their intent, but Admiral Nagumo decided that the element of surprise had been lost and he didn't want to risk his aircrew lives by continuing airstrikes. This was probably accurate and they would have had more trouble on further strikes, however if they would have bombed the fuel oil reserves, and further hit the battleships that were still intact they could have set back the American fleet even further into what could have been recovered. The old battleships that were all repaired and rebuilt at an astronomical price and did end up going back into the war such as Nevada, California, Tennessee, mainly basically were out of action for the first two years of the war when we needed them most, and served as good shore bombardment platforms in the end of the war, then were scrapped or nuked at Bikini Atoll. Its to bad that Texas being one of the older pre WW2 battleships was the only one to become a museum. All for Iowa's, North Carolina and 2 of the South Dakota's are lucky enough to have been saved. Prinze Eugan could have been, but they Nuked her along with Nevada, and New York.

Actually that was battle doctrine at the time. In the event of attack the battleships were to exit the harbor, come parallel to the beach, and bring their main guns to bear. BTW, the reason that she was able to get underway that morning, was because the ChEng (Chief Engineer) had ordered switching over from one boiler to another in order to perform maintenance on the first boiler. When the Japanese attacked, Nevada already had steam up in both boilers.

The Nevada in 1911 was originally designed for 12 guns. But the technical department mistakenly submitted a budget for the New York class, which limited displacement to 27k tons. Congress, which was angry that the Navy kept increasing the cost of their proposals, decided to hold them to the original bid. This was the period when Senator Tillman was demanding better budget discipline from the US Navy. I suspect there were other political reasons such as the Army versus Navy feud, and government spending in general. You have to remember that the American income tax would not come into effect until 1913, and the US government at the time had run out of land to sell so it's income was limited. Strangely, the US Navy was designing ships even before the previous class had been launched and tested! The Nevada was thus launched with guns mounted in the hull just as it was being proven it was a bad idea in the previous classes.

It would be very interesting to comprehensively compare the state of each combatant's quality of steel and layering practices from pre-dreadnaught to the super-Battleships. In so many of your videos, you compare the armor thicknesses on a one-to-one basis, even though there were advances made excluding or shared by these combatants; thus, 1.3" German armor may or may not have been equivilant to 1" British or American armor.

Having a standardized battle fleet is convenient in peace time but demands a standardized enemy for war time. You're relegating your newest ships to no more capability than the oldest ships in the battle line. It's wonderful to know that every ship in your battle line can do 21 knots and fire 14 inch shells but that suddenly doesn't look so good if the enemy can do 25 knots and fire 15-16 inch shells.

The enemy is also limited to the speed of their slowest ship, unless they don't care about their formation disintegrating.
@jnelchef5 жыл бұрын
@@bkjeong4302 True but they may be open to advancing technologies that allow them to increase their battlefleet speed and armament as they build newer ships. The Grand Fleet didn't decide to restrict the speed of the Queen Elizabeth class in order to maintain an arbitrary fleet standard. The Japanese had faster battleships. Both fleets also had battlecruisers which the USN didn't build. A fast battleship squadron had it's uses.

@chris younts War Plan Orange called for the US Pacific Fleet to sail across the Pacific to relieve Guam and the Philippines, then sail north towards Japan, fight a decisive battle with Japanese Fleet and then blockade Japan. That's hardly a coastal defense force.

According to an article I read in a book on Pearl Harbor by the Nevada’s engineering and gunnery officer when she was rebuilt aft the attack there was a shortage of copper. They build her buss bars out of silver from Fort Knox and painted them black. Only a few officers knew this and apparently she sank with them still in place.

As far as I'm aware there is some truth to the treasury loaning out silver for wire, but not for any navy ships, and not from Fort Knox. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manhattan_Project#Electromagnetic_separation By ratios on Wikipedia, they lost less than 4kg of silver, on 13,000+ tons of it being used.

I have always thought the US Navy’s lattice, or Bird cage fire control masts were good looking. The is not to say the were very sea worthy, and as naval artillery ranges increased the were not rigid enough for the range finders at the to of the masts.

Oddly enough I know this going sound bad and I don't blame the captain for doing what he did. But honestly barring any quirks of fate it might have been safer overall if the Nevada stayed in battleship Row. The Nevada got lucky in managing to beach herself instead of sinking in the channel blocking it or even just sinking in deeper water where she would be unrecoverable. I commend Ensign Joe Taussig's attempt to at least give the Japanese a moving target but the Nevada would have been perfectly recoverable sunk at her moorings barring any lucky hit either turning her over or blowing her magazines.
@TwistedSisterHaratiofales5 жыл бұрын
I agree with you, except the training of sailors was that Oh Shit, we are at war, realized in like 5 min of shock. They thought that there was a German battleship outside of the harbor that was shelling the harbor, and or Japanese ships out there along with the airstrike. So not only were they trying to be a moving target to be harder to hit, they were trying to get out of port to engage what they thought could possibly be out there shooting at them. It is real easy after one knows what is going on to asses the situation and make a different decision, but they were trying to move, shoot and communicate into combat mode. Also by them moving it diverted Japanese torpedo planes to them becoming a prime target away from their intended targets, so its really a guess like you mentioned that they might have been better off staying put. But by them not doing so, they may have takin hits that could have possibly caused more damage to other ships. LOL the Utah was sunk and some of the Japanese pilots thought that it was some sort of aircraft carrier because of having concrete on its decks as a aircraft booming target ship. That might have saved other ships as that ship tactically was as valuable as an out house. Luckily the carriers were out of harbor, and the Japanese didn't do a third, fourth, or more waves as was originally planned and hit the fuel reserves, and or more strikes on what ships were setting there.
@bkjeong43025 жыл бұрын
@@TwistedSisterHaratiofales There was no third wave planned, and the Japanese lacked the logistical capacity for one anyways.

@@bkjeong4302 Beg to differ. A third wave had been planned, but Admiral Nagumo hadn't wanted the job of hitting Pearl Harbor to begin with and so he did a rabbit. THAT saved the fuel reserves, repair facilities, and who knows how many lives.
