If I had a nickel for every time Hironobu Sakaguchi (creator of Final Fantasy) and Akira Toriyama (Creator of Dragon Ball) collaborated and created a JRPG that has a huge cult following I would have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it is weird that it has happened twice.
Blue Dragon is an interesting RPG indeed with a bizarre mishmash of ideas. The story and world is purposely cliche: the world is a medieval fantasy land with some sci-fi and steampunk elements added in, your party is mostly teenagers who lived in a remote village that was suddenly attacked, then they were special powers and now they wander the land to stop the big bad evil guy, in this case an evil scientist and sorcerer named Nene. The special powers given to the characters are shadow creatures who aide them combat, with each party member getting a different creature (the hero getting the titular Blue Dragon). The shadows make for unique combat and you get access to a class system for them.
The game is mostly an upbeat and nicely campy experience, but given what the heads have created in the past you can expect some creepiness. One of the more memorable parts of the game (and actually one of the earlier dungeons) is the Ancient Hospital Ruins, a long-abandoned medical facility crawling with restless undead, insane murderous robots, and twisted beasts born of mad experiments. The minimalistic piano is something we have many times in disturbing songs, but the piano playing over itself is a really good touch as are the mechanical sounds that eventually join in.
