Vocalist Anders Jacobsson comments:
"Sorrow Of Sophia was the first lyric, and one of the first songs written for Under A Godless Veil. This was years ago now, and I remember I’d just finished a lecture on Gnostic cosmology by Terence McKenna. He’d been speaking of the goddess Sophia’s ordeal and her story affected me on a very deep level. It’s sad yet heart-wrenchingly majestic bringing all of existence into it. I knew I had to do something with it for DRACONIAN as I was already having a few of Johan’s new song-ideas. This sparked what was later to become a whole album inspired by this story. It started here, with this song.
“Sorrow Of Sophia” is a complex song about a complex spiritual being. With it comes a diverse nature consisting of an initial minimalist soulful expression to feisty, heavy riffing with a harsh demonic formula to post-rock melancholia and symphonic soundscapes. Heike’s pure and crystalline vocals are beautifully entrenched holding the very spirit of the song."

Sophia is forgiven The mother of our prison Sophia is glistening Always weeping for the world She's apprehension And her eyes torn by guilt And we have these souls And through her we are ascension The grandeur of stillness And all of her sadness As lives cry out in torment You are the everlasting sun From the spark of countless eons You are weeping for the world And we sleep with the tides where we were lulled into matter Holding the burden of time And we wake in the midst of a world about to shatter Shedding the burden of time And from my window I saw the darkness ignite And a goddess concealed in shadow Seducing the stars and the flaming Gaia I came here from the waters to invoke The spirit within you I came to remind you But you are lost in a sea of dark Sophia is forgiven The mother of our prison She's stuck in deafening winds The whispering in the fields, in the trees and stone The sorrow and the guilt It broke through the spheres and fed the demons inside And we sleep with the tides where we were lulled into matter Holding the burden of time And we wake in the midst of a world about to shatter Shedding the burden of time

According to the gnostic mythos presented here so far, Sophia “fell” from the pleroma (the “light land” as it is referred to in the Pistis Sophia) and became imprisoned in this “aeon” or local dimensional reality, by the demiurge and lead archon called, Yaldabaoth who, it is told, stole her divine light.

The more i listen to this song, i feel that the goddess Sophia is is the personification of all our depression, sorrows, grief, sadness, and deep inner emotions. Anders Jacobsson's vocals speaks out as the person experiencing these emotions. "She is the mother of our prison." The mother who has given birth to those emotions we bear. The prison is all of those emotions we bear that keep us feeling like we are trapped. It becomes a burden yet all the pain of it is what gives us strength and purpose to live on. It never goes away and is something we will eventually have to accept. We even forgive Sophia and because we have a reason for those feelings, The pain of it all becomes so loud and deafening on the inside, but it whispers outside and we can hardly catch the attention of others. However we eventual feed the demons and give into our sins until we can comprehend and understand her. Sophia is ultimately what we see through all our pain and everything we go through. Then we can finally learn to have absolution in the end. After all, I am very impressed with how this band has transformed over the decades and being my number one since middle school. They have always kept that melancholic vibe and deep atmosphere to their music while staying fresh, improving, and adding something new. The vocals in this song are top notch. This is the one band i will never turn away from despite all the times I've been through because it has always been there like my significant other. Something i can never turn away from and reflect upon.

Such a beautiful song and album. This song brings me to tears every time I hear it with the emotion and passion released in such a piece. To say the least, I feel like I can connect to this on an emotional, or maybe more, as a spiritual level of forgiveness. The quote at the beginning is perfect. Now that I'm taking a humanities class makes me want to share this even more than simply playing a song to share. It has become more in depth with the meaning of the lyrics every time I hear it.

Oh I'm late, as a guy that loves Katatonia, My Dying Bride, Mourning Beloveth, Virgin Black, Morphia, Shape of Despair, Novembers Doom, and I am discovering it now? I was a Doom/Death guy in the past, today I listen sometimes, but still listen, now I consider myself a Post-Rock guy because I read while I listen to music. I consider Post-Rock and Doom/Death cousins, I think the influence of Doom/Death on Post-Rock is really high in bands like: April Rain, Baulta, Balmorhea, God Is An Astronaut, If These Trees Could Talk, Meniscus, Jakob, Tides From Nebula, Collapse Under The Empire etc. :) But it's just a matter of opinion, I didn't do any research about it. I don't know every time I saw written "Draconian" I thought: "I know it, it's Serenia", I don't know why I did that association in the past.

HOW? I mean HOW? Can a band continue to craft the most upper echelon of musical artistry ..? This is beyond any labeled metal genre, this is the purest form of talent and gift. The voice of Heike Langhans is not only ghostly divine but one of the best I have ever heard. I am wondering if the "Sophia" references from "lustrous heart" and this poetic gem relate to the Greek belief of Platonism. I do know, anyway. October 30th will be special day indeed. Far away though..shit!

Its actually referencing something entirely different, namely Gnosticism. It had Platonic influences, but it rejected the material world entirely as evil and a prison created by the Demiurge. In several traditions, she was either responsible for the Demiurge's creation of the physical world and/or the putting of the Souls into the unsouled physical bodies that the Demiurge created, taking from the higher realm of the Pleroma around the material world. The ultimate goal of Gnosticism was to shed one's entrapment within the physical world, and return to the Pleroma from whence our souls came.

This is finest critique of Christian religion and is worth to be heard not only by theological thinkers! We know from Paul of Christ being God´s SOPHIA (very clear see 1 Cor 1:24 & context). In Pauline terms, SORROW OF SOPHIA is identical with the SORROW OF CHRIST. Paul is also the author of picking up the main topic of the biblical book of Ecclesiastes summarized in one Hebrew term הֶבֶל HEVEL, Greek ματαιότης MATAIOTES = vanity, emptiness, senselessness. This word appears three times in the New Testament, two times in Paul´s letters and once in Peter´s second letter. Paul´s reflection appears in Rom 8:20 and describes it a deliberate introduction by God in order to fuck lives up for reasons of having hope: τῇ γὰρ ματαιότητι ἡ κτίσις ὑπετάγη, οὐχ ἑκοῦσα, ἀλλὰ διὰ τὸν ὑποτάξαντα, ἐπ’ ἑλπίδι· And it is also from Paul having a unique approach leading the self confidence of humans ad absurdum - in Rom 11:32 he exquisitely asserts that God will lead all humans to unbelief in order to create the ability to show mercy to all: συνέκλεισε γὰρ ὁ Θεὸς τοὺς πάντας εἰς ἀπείθειαν, ἵνα τοὺς πάντας ἐλεήσῃ. Sounds crazy, right? But look around - crazy are Christians professing to be good & believing enough to receive salvation! In Paul´s view they fail, see his withering assessment in Rom 3:10-18 (he literally quotes sentences like verse 13: τάφος ἀνεῳγμένος ὁ λάρυγξ αὐτῶν, ταῖς γλώσσαις αὐτῶν ἐδολιοῦσαν· ἰὸς ἀσπίδων ὑπὸ τὰ χείλη αὐτῶν = an open grave is their throat with tongues practicing deceit, venom of vipers is under their lips)! But these are foundations to theological understanding only - my intention is rather to make recourse to something far from speculation and whatever smart guessing: the effects of having an encounter with the LIVING ENTITY CHRIST! If you meet Christ you know immediately you met quasi "the real deal"! All happens IMMEDIATELY: knowing, loving, end of just "theoretical sciolism"! Something happens to you hardly to explain, there is not the slightest chance you remain unimpressed & unfazed! And you sense you´ve got answers to most of your questions having been a burden for all of your life! YOU CAN`T IMPOSSIBLY LIVE TOTALLY & ENTIRELY CUT OFF FROM GOD, WHO HAS ORDAINED CHRIST TO INCLUDE ALL HUMANITY INTO HIS LOVING CARE & HIS SUFFERINGS FOR HUMANS WITH CHRIST = SOPHIA AS GOD`S HUMAN FACE & AGENT SERVING AS MOST IMPORTANT SIGN! Christ is not simply a new thought, law, philosophy nor teaching, but a living happening leaving nobody having an encounter unmoved! So I´m deeply impressed by your music, DRACONIAN, for it deeply reminded me of CHRIST! Greetings and best regards from Germany! PS: Please go on with your accusing of God & related stuff, for exactly this I have learned from the prayer book of PSALMS - hitting God between his eyes with anger and accusations as sound therapy for getting honest, AND HONESTY TOGETHER WITH COURAGE appears essentially all God is wanting for humans! Here is a fine memory hook: CHRIST MEANS THE ABILITY TO LIVE WITH MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS AND EXPECTING FOR A GOOD OUTCOME AFTER ALL!
