For the record... A. Reduction in head spikes have also been seen in Triceratops as it aged so that's also within the realm of possibility at least for Marginocephalians. B. I have seen arguments that Sandy and Stygi specimens don't transition well because the have differing dome shapes and spike shapes. Stygi also might be bigger than what should be the older Sandy. Because we lack material from the rest of the head for Stygi, I avoided direct comparisons. C. I'm only using the JWE pictures in my thumbnails because they're easily available pngs. Paleontology is so much more than JP and JW. I'm not an awesomebro who conflates the two.

When I was about 8 or 9 I was a MASSIVE dinosaur nerd and loved researching topics and going down curiosity rabbit holes. I got the opportunity to visit UC Berkeley when they had a special day where they opened up the paleontology area for tours and one tour I was on was being led by Mark Goodwin. At one point towards the end he had the three skulls lined up on a table among other fossils and he just briefly mentioned this theory. At this time I was reading a lot about the theory cause it fascinated my young mind and when everything was over he still had a little bit of time and I actually had the chance to go off to the side and actually go over and chat with Mark about a bunch of the evidence for a bit. Reading or watching something about it was one thing but actually looking at the fossils and other forms of evidence and chatting in person with the paleontologist about it was an amazing experience.

@@matyaskassay4346 The Compies and the Little Panda-like colored Sinosauropteryx are well studied and we known that they are their own valid animal (and that they were adult too) because we have several very good materials from them. But for the others, it's true that their lacks. This theory was put with the Scipionyx (very famous for his holotype bady italian specimen that ate a fish during his two-three days of life) when this latter was discovered to be a Carcharodontosaurs. And an man (don't remember his name sorry), maybe the same who made this reveal, come and said that al the compsognathid were young Carcharodontosaurs too. But in the same time, this iea is very controversial, at the same level than the theroy of the three T-rex species that came more recently last year. And the guy itself is know to be discutable like Horner is. So.... For me, every others genus of the family that came from the same or neighbours regions anf ages of the Compsognathus can be see as true members, because in Europe in Jurassic was mostly just a sea with numerous small islands throughtout, so with little to have Carcharodontosaurs. Also, at the moment that Compsognathus still valid how we know he is, the family Compsognathidae still valid too, it's just that the others will maybe go into others faillies or create new ones following the cases in the future.

I think this is a pretty plausible hypothesis. We know that reduction is cranial ornamentation is something that apparently happens in the marginocephalia group based on things like Triceratops. I don't normally make suggestions since I don't know how often content creators are given them and are potentially harassed with them, but I'd like to throw this suggestion out there: what about dinosaur intelligence? Often Troodonts are said to be the smartest dinosaurs, but studies have shown other dinosaurs like Tyrannosaurids being smarter. I watches a video not long ago that even said T. rex was potentially smarter than some corvid birds (ravens, crows, and magpies) and even baboons. I feel it's a subject that'll be great for discussion.

On thing I asked myself is “why the reduction of head spikes” and I realized that if one of them were to break during combat it’s not like an antler where it will regrow, it’s living tissue meaning it would probably hurt the pachy. So one question remains; why even grow the spikes in the first place if they are just gonna reduce later on? One idea I have is maybe it was some sort of protection, like armouring up the juveniles so they can stand a chance to adulthood, maybe make some large therapods reconsider them as prey as they’d be uncomfertable to eat? The other theory is it’s some residual trait of evolution.

At least Wikipedia took down the Stygimoloch and Dracorex articles some years ago and removed the mentions of them because the species were no longer valid and were merged into Pachycephalosaurus. Besides, I have also understood that paleontology, academic and the research field don't like it if the juvenile Pachycephalosaurus is referred to by its old names and the use of the names Stygimoloch and Dracorex should be avoided in eny circumstances. However, I still have a hard time understanding why not all Pachycephalosaurus juveniles had horns and how Pachycephalosaurus dropped or melted its neck horns when it grew bigger, when juvenile's horns seem to be part of its skull bone.

Stygimoloch and Dracorex are such metal names and they used them on pachycephalosaurids. No disrespect to them, but the names could have been used so much better.

Yes despite that I may not like Jack Horner he is right about the growth stages of nannotyrannus being a juvenile tyrannosaurus and Draco Rex and stegy Being juvenile versions of pachycephalosaurus before that time back then I disagreed with him a lot

The pachy could just be like a Bull or Alpha of the herd and the rest look like Stygimoloch.

I had an arguement with a guy about this in the comments of a video where pachy and stigy where portrated as the same spicies.Ofcourse this was wrong cause the video was deticated to the jurassic universe where they are clearly 2 diffrent dinos but a stan of the youtuber came up and told me to do research before commenting cause im dum.I searched it up and he just typed in google and pressed a random button, I just pressed an other random button and it said that they ARE the same spicies so im really curious cause to be honset google isnt really reliable.

It's very strange that the fossils record of Pachycephalosaurus, Dracorex and Stigymoloch are very fragmentary and rare. They all come from the exact same formations than T-rex, Triceratops, Ankylosaurus and Edmontosaurus, and all these have a fucking numerous amount number of good and well preserved fossils materials for each. These formations were really good areas that have preserved well during millions years ago their fossils, which is also a rare fact to point out (the others being mainly Asian formations). So, really, that make any sens at all taking that into account... Because technically, we should have as numerous fossils of these animals as all the others. It's possible that Pachycephalosaurid and this species weren't as present than the others kind of dinosaurs, who them, were extremely present in these areas. Which will explain why there a few fossils of Pachycephalosaurus and co, because there was at the base not a good and big population at the time. Because formations are dated for a precise point in the time, and not dated as a period from one point to another one. We do now which age they are, but we do not how long these formation det old and when they disappeared. Also, as far I know, outside Pachycephalosaurus itself, we don't know many others Pachycephalosaurid in North America. This family was mainly a Asian one that migrate to North America in one point (like the Therizinosaurs, Oviraptorian, Ceratopsian and Tyrannosaurs for example). But it's just a theory of mine.

7:27 Animals don't do that, they can't reabsorb bone like that. No modern-day animal does it. It makes no sense for an animal to grow huge horns just to "reabsorb" them right before becoming an adult. And you can't use Triceratops to say otherwise because the head spikes aren't really lost or absorbed on Triceratops, the frill just keeps growing around the spikes, you can't say that with Dracorex or Stygimolock, the horns are too long. Also, even ignoring that there is the Dracorex specimen MPM 8111.

IF there would be three separate species of pachycephalosauroids in one formation/ecosystem.. wouldnt there be some sort of competition between the 3 species? If so, is there some proof for that? If not, then these two indeed were juvies and adols. Ez.

It's interesting you say pachys head butting each other could be a myth imo it just make sense male animals will hurt and injure them selfs for territory and female. I mean big horn sheep have skulls that can resist trauma but no amount of resistance will help if they keep bashing their heads against each other so even tho it hurts them that just what animals do for that stuff. Passing your genes is more important the injures

while I starting to see why jack Horner said all 3 are 1 animal stygimoloch most Definity is its own species not a young pachy or an old dacorex so instead of that jack Horner and those who believe that should look more on pachys and dracorex on whether Draco is its different animal or a young pachy I also seen darocrex as its own species

Maybe the reason Stigymoloch skulls were found from later periods than Pachycephalosaurus, is that Pachycephalosaurus may have went trough Neoteny like Axolotl and reaching sexual maturity while it's phisical form is not fully mature yet.
