WELCOME TO WEEKS 5-7 AFTER YOUR HUMERUS FRACTURE. THIS IS A TRANSITIONAL TIME IN YOUR REHAB. At this point you have x-ray confirmation that your bones have healed in alignment and can now begin to reclaim lost range of motion and regain strength rather than just the tone of muscles. I hope you are able to do 2 videos/day. However, many of these exercises you can do throughout your day as you walk through life. Make stretching, arm circles and scapular stabilization a part of who you are. It takes 18 months for the scar tissue to fully form and remodel. Therefore, you have a long journey of movement and strength ahead of you.

A non displaced proximal humerus fracture is a break in the bone near your shoulder joint or fracture of the upper arm where the pieces of bone at the fracture site are separated, but not out of position.
A displaced fracture is when the pieces of bone at the fracture site are separated and shifted out of position. This type of fracture typically requires surgery. A break more towards the elbow would be a humerus shaft fracture.
Most likely, you had a fall on your hand and the force went up to the head of your humerus and it broke. If there is no separation of the bones, and only a break, then surgery is usually not indicated and this is where this shoulder rehabilitation series will be great for you. Welcome to your virtual physical therapy for your shoulder complex.
These shoulder rehab videos are not an excuse to avoid your physical therapist, medical doctor or chiropractor. Please check in with your healthcare providers, gain their knowledge and make sure you are reaching your healing goals and that you are ready for each step. In fact, send them a link to the playlist • Shoulder Rehab - Non-d... and let's team up on this.
NOTE: DO ALL AT YOUR OWN RISK.

If the statistics are correct, you may very well have osteoporosis and, along with the supplements, I like a more alkaline diet, some sunlight and, eventually, some weight bearing exercise. With the over age 60 population, the most common fractures are of the hips, then the wrist and the third most common fracture is the proximal humerus. Welcome to the club : ).... and now welcome to your come-back!

Thank you for your encouragement and guidance. I can do things I thought were impossible and I now have complete hope of reclaiming all my range of motion at age 70. I have seen an ortho doctor and she recommended PT. I go to my first PT appointment next week, but I think one session will be enough since I have made such great progress at home with your videos.

Thanks so much for these videos-I found them by accident (no pun intended 😂). I’m in the UK. Every healthcare provider I’ve seen here has talked about the pain during recovery , the long rehab and being prepared to not regain enough movement to return to preaccident activities. Your positivity and side comments are so encouraging and your videos with their soundtrack are so much more inspiring than the exercise sheet I was given after my X-ray. I can’t thank you enough and already feel more optimistic about the next few months (week 6 post accident, day 2 using videos!)

Hi Adam My son introduced me to your videos for my broken humorous and arm. I started them shortly after my surgery. I can't thank you enough for the results after 6 weeks I am doing so much better. I even told my doctor and he wanted to know about you and said I was doing great. I am now at the 7th week session and driving my car again! Thanks again for your support and encouragement.

I'm so happy I found you. It's been an interesting journey, I fractured my Humerus whilst on holiday in Nepal and had an operation to insert a titanium plate. Never thought I would see the inside of a hospital in Kathmandu. All in all, it was a wonderful experience and the staff were amazing. As I was not in the system here in the UK it took quite a while for the health service to kick in. In the meantime I started doing your exercises and enjoying your videos. I love the support, and I love your little jokes, and yes we're all little elephants roaming through the jungle. I now have a physiotherapist and they're very happy for me to continue using your videos for my full recovery journey. Thank you

I've switched from physio to my chiropractor who is proving to be super helpful and I'm at about this place in my exercise ability without it feeling like I'm tearing muscles. I'm really grateful for these videos to set me on a good exercise path. In my Canadian-ness, sometimes I'm rolling my eyes at your motivational talk. LOL It's does help keep it on the light side.

Thank you again! I follow your videos starting late April. I had shoulder dislocation and displaced humerus fracture on March, 10. I've stared doing your phases 1 and 2 videos after 6 weeks of the strict immobilization. When I was finally released from the sling on May, 11, I started phase 4 video, my favorite one. I added phase 3 in the beginning of June. On June, 13, my physician have tested me, and he was very surprized to find that I performed 30-40% ahead of othe patients with similar traumas. I am progressing, and I am doing phase V now. I love the eccentric deltoid lift - it feels like the muscle is getting alive:) Thank you so much!

Hi Dr Adam, I wished I had found your videos since week 1° ... phylos plate, many screws, conminute fracture- prox humerus. I'll be 7 weeks post surgery tomorrow ( fractured 2 weeks before surgery). I started with your videos last week and I am on this one now - I do it 3 times per day and also some other exercises between. You are hypnotic - making us believe we will get better - thank you so much for your work, the good energy you spread - I hope will go back to you full of blessings. To those passing through this injury, keep exercise, I started to see the light at the end of tunnel this week ... we can make it💪🏻

Hi I am new at this exercise and tried to do it but it hurts too much so I’ll back off for awhile BUT I really appreciate your videos, because home OT only showed me swinging arm or moving across table or up wall… your exercises are truly more detailed and it’s like having a PT helping me during this trial! Oh I’m 72 woman, and fell 6 weeks ago with losing balance and did a body slam on left side on my carpet! Ended up with 3 fractures under shoulder AND with OA in knee with tares was actually why I fell! It’s tough getting older but I’m young at heart 💕 have a great day Gail.

Hello! Thank you SO MUCH for these awesome exercises. I came upon them while researching online PT. I have a comminuted proximal humerus fracture that happened Feb. 6th while doing laps, ice skating indoors. No snow this year so no cross country skiing. I switched to lap skating and caught the toe picks on brand new blades on ice and had a mighty lurch onto outstretched arms and left shoulder. I started doing PT at the hospital but find your versions much more inspiring and fun. Thanks to you! Have never experienced this kind of pain or set back so you are so good to find. Good luck out there to all of us healing. Keep going. Motion is lotion as Dr. Adam Fields says! (Note to lap skaters. Get speed skates or hockey skates. Skip the figure skates!).

I cannot express adequately enough, how grateful I am for your videos...(70 yrs old). Thank the good Lord, I came across them two weeks after my accident... I suffered a dislocated arm and fractured humerus, walking a dog that ran after a cat! I fell flat on the road and I immediately knew that the arm had been dislocated. After X-rays, the fracture was discovered. I have been in a brace totally immobilised for too long. At the beginning of this week, the brace was discarded! Yay! and I was told to do physio. In the meantime I had already started with your videos... the hand and wrist exercises specifically, which gave me a good head start. Initially, even with the physio, I was full of fear and would habitually keep my arm flat against the front of my body. Difficult habit to break! I still do it. Your videos are so gentle, the pace just right and my flexibility is improving daily! SO grateful! 🙏 Just started phase 5.

Hi thank you so much for your videos- they have been a godsend! I am in week 7 and the fracture is healing well. I can feel the difference your exercises are making and your positivity and empathy are so helpful. It is such a challenging injury... I live in the UK and there is so little patient care- you are pretty much abandoned in between x-ray appointments... I will be starting official physiotherapy next week. Regarding the massage gun, what speed would you be using? The one I bought has got 6 speeds. Thanks again for understanding and for making a real difference to patients ' life!
@dradamfields
@dradamfields 8 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! I like the faster speeds but applied lightly. That makes it so the gun is less likely to jump around on me but get a feel for what works for you. Start on the perimeter and slowly work toward the injured area as you can tolerate.

I love your series. This is my week 6 just got out of the sling I even okayed this with the orthopedic surgeon 3 weeks ago showed her your videos. Here's my biggest problem my elbow is 15% locked and I can't get it unlocked 3 weeks ago they said let it hang for a couple times per day but they didn't give me any elbow exercises so I've made no progress with that 15% lock. I'm doing your videos the shoulder doesn't seem as bad as the elbow now i do tend to have a little bit different curved arms and maybe that's why the elbow is so painful but my question to you is do you have any videos specifically to unlock this elbow right now. My professional PT starts February 7th next week but I'm doing your stuff daily I love your whole demeanor I love your series thank you so much for doing these. Again my elbow seems worse than my shoulder right now I have a closed broken right humerus fracture which has not moved and healing. So if you have anything for the elbow please let me know I cannot get it unlocked

Hi doc Why do I feel like it’s still moving? Is that normal? It doesn’t hurt too much though

I understand the movement is medication concept. However my issue was caused by overuse and repetitive movements, sanding and painting. So I’ve been afraid to do to many repetitive movements. Can you shed some light on this contradiction. 🤔 Thank you! 😊

Hi, Your movement was not balanced and like you said (very) repetitive. When the scapula (wing bone) elevates, and is there for hours/day, the mechanics of the entire shoulder girdle become destructive over time. Check out my shoulder stabilization videos (playlists). You will learn experientially how your mechanics can be restored. If you need to delve even further, let's do a telehealth call. fieldsfamilychiro.janeapp.com/locations/telehealth/book#staff_member/1

Fractured humorous didn't tell me I needed surgery for 10 days had to have plate and screws surgeons notes said he had to remove callus formation so I had callus in 10 days but at 6 weeks with plate nothing I am so scared it's not healing it was a spiral displaced humerus fracture near elbow. 7 weeks out can't use walker or do pt why is this happening

Hang in there, Katherine. Just do what your shoulder allows you to do. If you have to go back to a previous video, that is okay. Get another x-ray to make sure the bone is healing. This will give you some confidence to move forward.

@@dradamfields it's not my shoulder which has had surgery before and sub scap had atrophied so it's not in optimal shape. Surgeon won't see me for 6 weeks I agree it should be x-rayed before that. 2 mo out from surgery still painful and no callus formation . How much can you not do

I am 80 years old and i am in week 7 of my fracture i am unable to get 2nd xray until week 10 The question is Do i need xray bcfore i do weeks7 8 9 10 ?
@dradamfields
@dradamfields 8 ай бұрын
If you've had a interim x-ray that showed some progress with new bone growth, proceed. I have a little trepidation with your age and not knowing if you have osteoporosis but, if you decide to go forward, do the exercises slowly and with caution. I can't give you a 100% either way without getting my hands on it. Non Unions can be common. Just go to a radiology clinic and pay out of pocket for a single x-ray. It'll be cheap and you'll get the peace. Don't wait the 10 weeks

8:27 Dr fields I was mistaken about the time of my follow-up x-ray it's on day 52. 7 and half weeks not 10 weeks. I will get the x-ray on December 1 so I will wait until I get the x-ray before I continue the exercises Thank you so much for your exercises and the rapid response to my inquiry.
