Thank you, everyone is going to have their opinions. I’m not too worried. Most of the people who comment about “what’s best for horses” have never even been in a barn 😂🤣. These horses get the best care, you don’t get incredible physical specimens like this without excellent love and care. Another thing people don’t seem to understand is, you can’t really make a horse do this stuff unless they want to be a part of it. It’s hard enough, challenge enough, struggle enough to train a willing horse let alone one who doesn’t want anything to do with you. Agility dogs I think are a good example. Those are the happiest dogs on the planet, and if one of them didn’t want to play along?? For one, he’d be terrible, but then… you’d just pick the next dog who is happy and willing and then you have something to complete with. I’m a horse owner, I love my horse to death. I’ve never met anyone who didn’t love their horse. 🤷🏻‍♂️ People love to gripe and complain from their couches in nice warm houses. They have never paid the bill for boarding or vet bills or cleaned stalls or driven 25 min to put on a horse blanket. These horses have jobs… just like everyone else. Thanks for watching Cynthia, you’re awesome.

Oh my... I cannot say how MUCH I LOVE THIS! My heart breaks at the beauty of these horses, their sheer power, their abilities, their willingness to do what is asked of them (yes, i have owned horses and i know some are more willing, some can be difficult...but for the most part..). I LOVE, LOVE THEM! Thank you so much for this and I hope you post many more! I went to a draft horse show near Chicago, and the earth literally shook when they all were driven around....I have never forgotten. Man it has been such a long time since I saw a four-horse hitch much less and six. I don't even go to parades anymore since they never have horse team floats. They were the only reason I went to parades. Closest I can get in the one chuck wagon race they have in my area a year.

ending notes,... -Their tails are docked because if not they can get tangled up in the rigging, which can rip all their hair out, which is painful and dangerous as they think something is attacking them and they bolt putting everyone and everything in danger. its an incredibly easy quick and painless process now a days if done correctly. Like i said, their beautiful tails and quite worthless as fly repellent, not free flysheets are much more effective and healthier for the horse - horses when working sometimes form a lather in their mouths as they salivate. thats the white foam you see, not a fungus. Same thing happens when you give a horse an apple as he munches on it. A lot of the bits are flavored, they suck on them and chew a bit, they also like the flavor copper so a lot of bits have copper in them (also no free) witch they suck and chew on, also makes them salivate and lather. I give my horse a treat every time i put the bit his his mouth and gets all giddy every time he sees the bit heading his way. - horses are fidgety animals, any horse anywhere swishes their head around, even horses in pretty little pastures, these horses are no different. They also know it's show time, they are excited and energized. A lot of them feed off the excited energy of the other horses in close proximity and the crowds. that makes them more fidgety. A well made proper fitting bit doesn't bother them at all. - Miserable horses?? each one of these giants weighs around 2000lbs thats more than a Volkswagens bug. You can't make them do anything they don't want to do. There are horses that refuse, that don't enjoy it, don't want to work. It's usually immediately obvious. These horses, don't end up here, they are the ones eating garbage weeds atrophying somewhere. This is years of fine tuning and work, with happy willing horses. They like to compete, and show off. Horses put side by side, want to be the first, push harder, run faster. You can't force a horse to do anything, they will crush you. "Broke Horse" is an old term for beat down horses that were mistreated, these horses are loved and cared for and understand their job. A "wild draft horse" with no manners, is a dangerous thing, the need training. - Watch the end of the video where I walk through the stable, watch them taking care of them. washing all the sweat off which is itchy and uncomfortable, grooming and brushing, massaging them. Tons of feed and grain and supplements and rest. Families working together doing something totally wholesome, and loving these amazing beasts. A lifetime of care and work, some of these teams came from Canada, had to cross international boarders. They called the horses by name. I walked past a stall and there was a 6 year old girl laying on the horses bare back like it was a recliner, reading a book. Thats what she chose to do at that moment. its was the awesomest thing. To me thats not the look of someone who doesn't love a horse and wants them to suffer or be in pain. I didn't buy a horse so I could look at it in a pasture wasting away, and i certainly wouldn't wish that on Apollo again, I saw first hand what that did to him, that was suffering. Working together, getting it right watching his brain work and problem solve,... its amazing. He's so willing to please and work. Perks up when I walk into the stable, knows its me as soon as I walk through the door and wants to work and play. Before you start accusing and pointing the finger... take the time to look and learn. Call Waring shires, they will take you on a tour. They are some of the nicest kindest people you will ever meet. They will love to teach you all about their gentle amazing giants. They did for me. the end (last thing: not intending to be rude, but if you don't like the video... no one is forcing you to watch it... just sayin)

It absolutely astounds me how such large animals can have such graceful foot work. I’m a dog trainer and I can barely keep my dogs from getting the lead wrapped around their legs when I do obedience work on the long line… It blows my mind that these horses don’t trip especially when two in front slow up and their stuff loosens almost dragging the ground and the horses behind them know not to step on it and they know not to step over it. It’s like watching a horse that knows how to dance only there’s 6-8 of them and they’re dancing in sync. 🤯

I can't believe i'm getting sucked into this, but since its my video, I'll say my piece and you can take it or leave it. Horses are not cats, not dogs, not goldfish... so they can't be compared. I have a draft horse I love him, I ride him, I brush and fuss about him endlessly, I do everything in my power to make sure he gets the best care is happy and healthy. First of all, draft horses were bred for this, to work to pull, that includes temperament and desire/willingness to work. Hundreds of years of breeding to get these amazing powerful beasts you see today. Thats time and care and love. These specific amazing examples of the breeds, it doesn't happen on accident. This is years of exercise, training, proper care and feeding, vet visits, including equine dentists, and Ferrier work. For example, on average these big horses will go to the Ferrier every 10 weeks for shoes, any guesses how much that costs? $500 each visit (and yes they need them, shoes are actually cushions for a horse & protect the horses feet from damage, regardless they need constant attention and trimming or else that causes serious health problems which usually mean the horse is put down) why didn't wild horses need them, that's because they got sick and died or got eaten by cougars, a dead horse doesn't need shoes. I know a lot of these owners personally, I've been to their stables and discussed proper care, people with decades of experience. The Waring Shires for example out of Idaho, LOVE their horses. Arlin and a few other farmers in the mid west worked together & single handedly saved the American Shire breed from extinction back in the 50's & 60's. Arlin and his son currently own about 30 shires including one of the finest Stallions in the world, working to propagate and maintain the breed. Is that free? were they given handouts for their work? NO IT COSTS MONEY, TONS OF MONEY!! We all have jobs, have to pay our way, 9-5 's, a J.O.B., kids that go to school for decades to learn just how to work and become self sufficient. These horses are no different, we ask them to work for maybe 1 hour day during show season, and then they get to veg, sleep, eat, fart, play. For a horse to be this strong, have a coat this shiny, feet immaculate, manes that look perfect, etc etc etc. It costs a small fortune, times that by 20 or 30 or more for each horse, and its a staggering amount. Shows like this one, where there is prize money, jobs to perform for crowds, wedding carriage rides, funeral precessions, pays for the horses food and care, stables and medical bills. Most of these guys don't work a farm or til the earth. They all have regular jobs and do this on their time cause they love being with the animals. Horses get sick all the time, and it's never free or cheap either. I have a video on my channel about dental work for a horse, this guy is an expert, discussing the need for constant dental work on a horse to avoid pain and discomfort... was he free for me, was he doing horse dental charity work? another $500, and Apollo (my horse) didn't even have a cavity!! I dare you to show me a horse "out to pasture" that looks 1/10th as healthy and fit and beautiful as any one of these horses in this video. pasture horses are fat, have terrible muscle tone, they eat garbage weeds, covers in mud and flies (their tails do very little to prevent this) their feet look terrible and most likely causing a lot of pain. Their manes and tails are matted and usually full of burs. Those are just the visible things, what about their teeth, or joints or gut health? Thats not to say a pasture horse can't be happy and healthy, plenty are, but much more looks sad fat and lazy, having no purpose in life than to just sit and eat. Dogs are happiest when they have jobs and attention, when they can work. In this regard horses are no different. They need to be worked, trained, they want to use their brains, to learn. Thats time, one on one with them. Until you own a horse and care for them properly,... you can't know this. The connection that is formed, the bond. Horses need this, without it they become depressed and lethargic. They need their minds engaged. Do they love every minute of it? I doubt it,... and ... so ?? Do you love your job, or homework, or paying bills, and house chores? we all have things we don't love or don't want to do in life. but we also want food on the table, a roof over our heads, iPhones, cars, etc etc etc. And so we work, it's just life. At the turn of the century these horses had more tangible jobs, working fields, plowing, delivery wagons etc. until the invention of the tractor and the truck and you know what happened when they no longer had jobs? When they could no longer pay their way? They were slaughter by the hundreds of thousands. Poor farmer couldn't afford to care or feed them. In England in 1900 there were about 1,000,000 shires in the county working and contributing, they were slaughtered at a rate of 100,000 a year. At your job if you don't work, you get fired, at school you don't do your assignment you fail. It wasn't the horses fault, and it wasn't the farmers fault, they were all just doing their best trying to survive, but it is the facts. My shire horse Apollo, he was a pasture horse before I got him, the old owner would put HUGE bails of grass and just let all the horses eat, unregulated out in the fresh air blues sky, like a happy horse right? Wrong,.. he was so unhealthy when i got him, I about had a panic attack thinking i had made a huge mistake. He's feet took THOUSANDS of dollars to get under control, he has to have shoes on cause he's souls are too thing because of improper care, for him its like running bare foot on gravel. Now its like he has the latest Nike's and he hasn't shown signs of pain even once. If any of you would like before and after of Apollo from when I got him to today, feel free to comment with your email and Ill send you some images. The transformation you will see is incredible. Thats years of training, and healthy care and eating. How do you train a horse?? well with a bit. There are other ways yes,. but this is also the most proven successful. I would never hurt my horse or put him in danger. But he is 2000 pounds, if he isnt taught how to behave, he will hurt people, me, my kids, his trainers and stable staff. horses in the wild are INCREDIBLY violent, thats the pecking order, so they sometimes need a firm hand. Thats not cruelty thats balance and training and teaching. I spend 99% of my time pampering him and giving him apples and kisses, but if he tires to bite me,... he gets a slap, a horse bite can tear flesh. He has to know thats NOT OK. Plus in the off season they maybe get worked every three days for an hour. The rest is play with other horses and human grooming/ feeding and care interaction cause owners who go to this much trouble love their horses and their horses love them. ferrier $500 every 10 weeks Dentist $500 every 9 months Stable fees $400-$700 for nothing fancy Vet bills annually $1000 Winter Blanket (for my draft horse) $300 special order Fly sheet (1000 times more efficient that the tail nature gave them) $250 special order Grain $50 a bag every month (he eats like a horse) Training fees (cause i need all the help i can get) $500 monthly supplements $50 monthly trailer for transporting to vet or farrier or dentist or travel $10,000 (for nothing special) insurance annually $500 Saddle $1000-$4000 Bridle $200-$300 plus,... all the other stuff that isn't free... and this is just my horse. I don't have two or three or 30. I can guarantee the horses in shows like this get just as good of care and attention, if not much much better.

I don't agree with your argument, that most pasture horses are fat and lazy and not well cared for. That is a generalisation that is equally as unfair as me saying "every" sport/competion horse (which sport doesn't matter) is "tortured", because it doesn't get time in a pasture and doesn't get to socialize with other horses. For the record: I do not say that, it is just a comparison to get my point across. There most certainly are and always will be cases of pasture horses not being well cared for - yes! But for every pasture horse not taken care of, there is a stable horse somewhere that is not well taken care of. I have seen horrid stables and stable conditions and I have seen horrid pasture conditions. The truth, as always, is somewhere in the middle and is different for each individual case. I generally don't agree with keeping horses in a stable 24/7 or most of they day (60-75%), because horses are foraging, nomadic herd animals. So their basic needs are foraging, socializing and moving around. Keeping a horse in a stable 24/7 denies them these basic needs. And even the law (at least in my country) states, that you have to keep and care for an animal in accordance to their basic needs. Personally, I keep my horses in a free roam barn with an attached sand paddock during the winter months, with access to hay 24/7 (under a hay net). The only exception is my old Paint Horse. He stays in a stable for some hours every day so he can eat some hay in peace and rest, because he is very introvert. During the summer months they live in pastures 24/7. And no matter if it is summer or winter, I work them daily if possible, but at least five times a week, despite working a fulltime job myself. The horses are brushed and groomed regularly and see a farrier every 4 weeks and a specialized horse dentist twice a year. Our pastures are well taken care of, we remove "garbage weeds" as you call them, and we remove horse droppings daily. I would also agree putting my horses in a stable, if I knew they would get daily turnout for at least 10 - 12 hours a day with other horses, to move around and socialize. If the needs - the general ones but also the individual needs due to health, age, race, etc. - of a horse are taking care of and the horse is well cared for and trained/worked properly, it really doesn't matter if it lives in a stable or in a pasture, if it does dressage, jumping, cross country or carriage driving.

I disagree with you! I have a full blood registered Friesian and a full blood Shire mare. Putting on shoes is the worst thing you can do to a horses feet unless that horse pulls carts or is worked hard of hard ground - in nature horses travel 20 miles per day and do not wear shoes, they do not die from bad hooves. I pay $45. per horse barefoot trim every 8 weeks. What I spurge on is $700 per month on organic supplements. My horses are both head turners and hang out in the pasture 90% of their time.

@@ingridblohm-hyde805 now that sounds delightful $45 😍😍 I had a Clydesdale he was barefoot, he’s feet were hard as rocks. I’ve tried with apollo on three separate occasions and it was a disaster everytime. He can’t ever be barefoot. For lots of reasons, but the number one being his soles are too thin, they measure about half what they should be for a horse half his weight. That’s coming from an equine vet, a hoof specialist (who took many xrays) and the guy you see in this video who is on the USA ferrier team and competes world wide. Shires were bred in the soft soil of England. Apollo spends his time in Utah and Arizona where the ground is so hard it might as well be cement. Natural is great and all, except he wasn’t bred here, his feet weren’t designed to withstand this hard lacked ground, much like a city horse on the streets. Apollo was a “pasture horse” happy go lucky eat all day not a care in the world. Except his feet will probably never recover, his muscle tone was 1/2 what it is now from lack of exercise, he was basically a couch potato, he had worms, the mats in his hair were so bad I had to cut much of it. He was fat and getting dumber by the minute. He may have thought he was happy, and people driving by would say WOW look at those happy horses eating at a giant bail of hay. 😍 but the reality was different. Only sith deal in absolutes. I said in my comments, pasture horses can be happy and cared for, but most,.. aren’t. Free spirited maybe and don’t know better, but not healthy, and an unhealthy horse can’t really be happy. I’m glad you take it on differently, and care. That is the OUR BEST GUARANTEE for happy healthy horses. But it’s my experience that it’s usually just lazy horse keeping, which is never a good thing pasture or stable. There will always be people who abuse and neglect their animals, regardless of trains of thought or training discipline. But to each his own. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Wild horses life expectancy is about 1/2 of a domestic horse, that also is very telling. I think what we can most certainly agree on, is,... don’t let an idiot who doesn’t know what they are doing work on your horses feet 😉, bare foot or shod, it’s just a bad idea. Have a nice day.
@Nightgrauen

@@ingridblohm-hyde805 Do you mean me or Santiago? Because my horses are barefoot. Seeing a farrier regularly doesn't mean they are shoed. I have hoof shoes for rough terrain. But! Not every horse is able to go barefoot. Most horses are, but there are cases where a shoe is the more sensible solution. But these days there are enough options. It doesn't need to be an unflexible metal horse shoe.
@Nightgrauen
@Nightgrauen 3 жыл бұрын
@@apollotheshire Don't get me wrong, I am not out to get you or anything. I can understand that people, in certain situations, areas, etc. put their horses in stables, because is - at that time or place - the best solution or because there are no better options. And if the needs of the horses are met, that is absolutely fine by me. You say, you don't deal in absolutes, yet you pretty much again generalize "pasture horses can be happy [...] but "most" aren't [...] and it is lazy horse keeping". If I were inclined to do so, I could say putting a horse in a stable is lazy horse keeping, because it is easier on the owner. The horse does not have to be fetched from the pasture everytime it is to be worked or ridden. It is always clean and doesn't need such extensive brushing/cleaning. There is no or less pasture maintainance, etc. I know that probably isn't the case for most stables, but I personally know people who put their horse in a stable for that very reason. In the end, there is work at both ends of the spectrum, just different and it has to be done. Either the work is done properly or it is not. You can have clean stables and happy, healthy horses or not- if you are a lazy (stable) owner. You can have clean pastures and happy, healthy horse or not - if you are lazy. It boils down to a horse or stable owner's will to put the time and effort in, to keep, maintain and train horses correctly .

Love the horses, love driving, but I hate the docked tails and I even MORE hate those overchecks that are so common in the US. We never use them here. Not necessary at all. Draft horses need to be able to lower their heads, they shouldn't be kept up like that. Also when a horse trips over something it will fall because again, it can't lower its head. In my country overchecks are considered abuse and aren't be used. In driving clubs they're not allowed at all.

Luckily, they only use the overchecks when showing pulling empty carts. If you looks closely, you will see that the overchecks on most of the horses are loose enough that they flap a bit even thank goodness. People in the US who are using horses for real work don't use those nasty things.

To anyone knowledgeable about horse hooves: I’m an artist studying horse anatomy, and I often watch horse videos. I notice that race horses, ranch horses and wild horses have narrow hooves without little to no flare at the bottom of the hoof. However, i recently went to a draft horse show, and one thing i noticed, was these horses had huge hooves! Both length and. width wise. I also notice that the shoe itself is far wider that the actual hoof. Why is this? is it unintentional? Does it help disperse their weight? thanks.

The hooves of draught horses are flatter simply because of the weight going onto them. You will also see that the front feet tend to be bigger and flatter, because 2/3rds of a horses weight is on the front feet.

I love and respect these big, magnificent animals. I only wish I could have a close relationship with owners who handle the Percheron breed. If you use bits correctly they won't hurt the horse. Just as bit-less methods can hurt a horse and break their noses when used in the wrong way. I am a bitless rider myself but because my horse is doing well with it. Some horses don't, and that's okay, if the bit is used correctly
