That was some of the very very best horsemanship I have seen in years. Your quiet, firm and steady treatment of your team was wonderful to watch. Despite a wreck you kept calm outside and didn't worry your team. No slapping, or shouting, just asking them. I just loved it. My Dad worked horses and he would have enjoyed this very much!!!

My grandfather worked his team in the Train yard in the winter, he had the only team that could start box cars and move them alone, they had to use four horses most of the time. Gramps had big Belgian mares and they would hang in the harness and lean into it until it began to move. That team would do anything for him and he would never allow anyone else to work them.

Reminds me of my grandfather. He owned a dairy his entire working life and never owned a tractor. I remember him winning the pulling contest at the fair one year as he had the only team there was worked every day. Blacky and Bubb. Other teamsters were out there yelling and snapping crops etc to get their horses to pull hard. Grampie (as we called him)hooked up the horses to the sled and then went around in front of them. Kissed each on the nose and stepped a back about four feet in front of them. He started making kissing noises and those two tried so hard to get to him because they loved him so much they pulled the sled all the way to the end. It was one of those sleds that shifts the weight so it gets heavier to the horses as it pulls. Hands down winner for time and distance. Great memory. Jim seems to have that great gentle nature with the horses too.

I spent my summers on a farm in Nebraska where we farmed with draft horses back in the late 50's & early 60's.. I have a lot of time driving a team. Great to see these teams doing this. I knew from the beginning they would not have a problem with pulling this stone. Didn't think about one not being as trained as the others. I'm 78 & my team driving was when I was 14 or 15. Still love to watch a team doing 'their thing'!

Yep, I grew up on a small farm in East Tennessee. My dad would take a team of mules into peoples gardens that were on steep hillsides ( no rototillers) to earn a little money . I’d tag along , I loved being around my dad and the teams. My dad would plough, disk , whatever needed doing. But working a team of mules is different than working horses.

1951 we were plowing a field with a JOHN Deere, my brother Harry was driving, I sat beside him with my arm behind Harry- suddenly BANG. Plow hit a rock the plow jumped up between my hands and hit the back of the seat. NO damage but it could have chopped my hand off. We never dug the rock out. Great words you have as commands they understand so well after 10 years. Cute that Brent keeps her ladies recognized from the boys. John

There are still mule team logging outfits around. In the mountains out west, across Appalachia in the hills and hollers, Missouri, Arkansas, they're around. Mules can log out an entire woods without tearing up the land. Same goes after storms. Plenty of land owners prefer the mules to come in and drag out the downed timber to regular logging equipment. Mules can get places vehicles can't, and they don't rut up the land and destroy roads and topsoil the way log skidders, trucks, tractors, and other equipment does when the ground is soaking wet.

Great video! Besides the drama of moving the huge rock (that kept us all on the edge off our seats) I found three things very enjoyable in this video. First was the sound of the horses walking through the tall grass. What a beautiful sound. I also enjoyed listening to the horses breathing at the end of the pull. When do you get to experience the heavy breathing of gentle giants? And the third great thing I enjoyed was Jim riding the rock. When will you ever see that again. Didn't Jim look great up there looking like something out of "Ben Hur"??? Now in a few years when the "Duke of Earl Pair" get involved they can move that boulder out by the road and use that flat face for a bill board or whatever.

No bad comment here! You did a wonderful job with them. I love your videos, but never have time to watch a whole episode. I love horse pulls, so this one had me the whole time. 😄👍

My husband watched this last night and sent it over to me to see. He told me that when he worked in Mexico, as a young teen, that the farmers all used draft horses and wagons. He admired how you got your teams to work together, their good condition and pulling power. Congratulations on working through the problems of moving that large boulder, thank you for sharing it.

First and foremost, no one (meaning the horses first and for most got hurt or injured) I have no doubt in my mind that the well being of each and every one of them. Buck ,Ken ,Bill , Lady, was in the front of JIm's mind. and one other thing that I observed was the amount of determination shown. you could see that in their hind quarters when they dug in. The will of all four was there. Jim asked and they pulled great job all round to JIm for his caring of his horses first. I could see the concern for his horses on his face first. then the rock. and task at hand. All concerned, all determined, all were successful. Thanks for sharing. I'm just so glad it worked out and no one got hurt. God Speed

Mess ups help us all to learn. I’ve trained some as a pilot. I’ve been scared by what could happen. The scary moments made me more aware and vigilant to safety. Your handling talent is encouraging and I pray an art that will never leave.

Thank you. It made me appreciate the power of horses. Working for horses is good for their health. Horses aren't pets they have to work to be healthy.

That was one of the most interesting videos you have ever posted! What an example of the work you have put into knowing each of your horses. Your superb horsemanship shows not when things always go as planned but when things don’t go perfectly and you have to figure it out. I dealt you could’ve done what you did with those 4 horses if you did not have several years of experience with them.

You're in a situation like when I get my 32 HP JD Compact tractor stuck. I hate to call the neighbor with the bigger tractor but I have to. Some years ago I kept hitting a rock while mowing trails with my brush hog. I tried digging it out with my front end loader. It was at the base of a glacial drumlin. I dug down as far as I could and gave up without finding the bottom. I realized I could never pull it out with my tractor. Now I just go around it. You probably need a bulldozer. I'd sell that boulder to a horse pulling contest as long as they come and get it.

It's because of these beautiful beasts that we have any farm ground in Ohio. They didn't have big machines back then that we do today. Absolutely beautiful team!
