Baby Alive came out in the 1970s, when I was a kid, and it ate and pooped real food, which was fine, except that kids were really bad about cleaning out the insides, and often the food would just rot inside there.

Kinda. It wasn't real food. It was a powder, likely corn starch based, that was mixed with water. The baby had batteries, because there was a digestion thing happening. Mouth moved, some action inside, sending the goo food to the downstairs depository. As long as as the batteries were good, it didn't hang out in the baby long.
