I literally just finished watching this last night LMAO! I was very young when he was still on TV so I don’t remember much, but the few things I do remember(ed) about him made me realize how important seeing him was. He was the talk of a lot of speculation and controversy, people all the time wanted to know if he was gay, if he was a woman, I think I even remember people outright asking him on TV what he had “in his pants.” The Hispanic/Latin community is very conservative, very religious, and very intolerable to non heterosexual norms. He was revered and praised but also made fun of all the time. I remember younger me actually making sense of him talking about his non binary personality and how it wasn’t important to know if he was gay or straight, he didn’t find that important at all. Other people can code him as gay..... but to me.... to see someone who didn’t conform to gender roles and renounce sexuality like that...... it was like unlocking a core memory. My asexual self finds that so incredibly powerful. It also makes me so happy that he was loved all the way to the end. Tragedy will always strike, but his attitude towards life and others is so pure and beautiful and motivating, I’m glad he was still able to have a good attitude and entertain for at least a little more. You don’t need to be into Astrology to be into Walter Mercado. May he Rest In Peace.

Walter Mercado was non-binary and asexual.. And their message was pure love. We need more people like them.
@yevgeniyaleshchenko8493 жыл бұрын
Oh how cringe.... More labels. We need more good people in general, period. Whatever gender and orientation.
@arielamejeiras86773 жыл бұрын
@@yevgeniyaleshchenko849 Labels are needed, for now, to communicate that other possibilities outside ‘the norm’ exist. If the concept of visibility and representation are irrelevant to you. In a word, if you are cis and het, this might be cringey. For many of us is a source of pride.
@jacktrujillo5423 жыл бұрын
Walter was likely non-binary and asexual but it isn’t ours to say. Adding unfamiliar language and labels to our queer ancestors doesn’t do any service to them or their legacy. We can understand Walter in that way with these labels but it cannot be ignored that Walter did not use or have language like “non-binary” and “asexual”... especially as a Latino. This language is not only inaccurate to what Walter used to identify himself but also extremely American Western.
@zzzzzzz9063 жыл бұрын
These are more postmodern words, because "sexual" and "binary" derive from the Latin language... In Brazilian Portuguese it is "assexual" and "não-binário", terms that have always existed naturally in our language because there is "sexual" and "binário", we don't read as an North american thing. More like a millennial thing in concepts. We are "Latinos" because Portuguese and Spanish come from Latin. Also that all America is western, including Latin American countries, I had no idea that there are people who do not consider Latin American countries as western. "Queer" is a concept and word that we know more as an north american, but we are already including in our language and culture. In Brazil, we read Walter Mercado more as a gay man, but I really don't think he ever identified himself that way in front of the public.
