He didn’t even get the launch control engaged in the M8 and was only assuming that because it still launched like a rocket 😂 Stock M8 competition does 0-60 in 2.8-2.9 seconds and 1/4 mile in 10.8-10.9 consistently by numerous reputable channels. And 4WD sport mode is the mode to be in even in roll races. The GT500 also has a 160 bhp advantage.

Maybe it's not in perfect conditions or the launch control doesn't do its best in the M8. But I've seen many tests suggest that stock M8 is capable of 10.7-10.8 seconds run. Maybe 10.7 is on drag strips. But 10.8 is on normal road. Normally it can at least run 11.0. 11.2 is pretty slow for M8 already.

Road and track also preferred the GT500 over the M8 in their performance car of the year while the Germans won the straight line race they didn't win the handling and steering communication categories where unbelievably the Mustang was actually better and is more entertaining to drive as you don't have the extra weight of the all-wheel drive system over the front tires which in a turn actually fights to lose the grip they gain in a drag race

AWD vs RWD is never a fair match up when drag racing from the dig

On the street definitely. It's only at the track where the surface is very sticky that AWD starts to become a disadvantage (due to the extra weight). That's why the fastest cars at the track (over-all) are RWD with drag tires to hook up. AWD cars will even convert to RWD to run faster in drag racing (due to less weight, better weight transfer). But for the average Joe in a stock car, AWD for the win, especially if you're on the street.

given that the m8 weighs 100lb more and has 150 less horsepower, i'd say in the rolling race it was far closer than it should have been. keeps up good. Put a tune on that m8 and see what happens.... hell do the same with the gt500. I wonder which has more potential bolt on for bolt on. m8 might make like 700whp with catless exhaust, intakes, intercooler and tune. Im sure the mustang would be a better 1/4 mile car if the trans can hold, that engine could probably make 1200hp with just a bigger blower. I wonder what the gains would be for a pulley on that car?

What everyone forgets is that dealers are marking the Shelby WAY over the quoted "80" grand. So for much closer to the same price, 100-140+ for the Shelby gt500...and 170ish for the BMW...it changes things a bit if you're a penny pincher. Reminds me of when the first zl1 came out and yet they claimed the Shelby was cheaper. People were paying close to same price for both, but in my opinion having driven a maro with the track (lte) package added, it handled much more like a track car, and the brakes were nice and firm and grabby. Get it sideways around a corner exit and it would practically pull itself straight, just like a BMW, Porsche, etc. The Shelby that it was up against...did NOT grip nor handle that well. But honestly they're just different experiences, one some people consider more fun, and some not. Just different strokes. But I'd take the well composed controllable zl1 anyway when they're both the same price🤷 same thing with the BMW. If your really wanting to track these cars you'll be tuning, adjusting boost levels and playing with tires and suspension. The BMWs are excessively limited with intake, exhaust and tune from the factory. Easy gains with downpipes and tune. Same with the zl1 to a degree and the Shelby to another degree. Just prefer the platform on the zl1 and BMW better myself. The way they put the power down makes them feel better imo

But for people who are paying this kind of money for these cars, you can assure that they won't have any issue paying the tax premium for petrol. Plus, the GT500 is such a hardcore track car for nearly half the price of the upcoming S Plaid it just serves a different market and caters to it properly. If you want to buy a car that is plainly just fun and you don't mind paying a gas premium you can get in to a Hellcat for under 60k these days which has essentially the same interior quality and level of power of any electric performance car at that price point and manages to make a loud noise and burn the tires off at the same time. The electric revolution is real but petrol cars will always exist for weekends.

Drag radials will not help on that surface. Great for the drag strip, not for what they were doing. And honestly it will not help anyway. The launch control in an M8 is insane with it being AWD.

I've dead hooked a supercharged 4.6L making 460lbs/ft of torque on the street with a pair of Mickey Thompson ET street radials. Would it have been enough to combat the M8's AWD...hard to say. But they would have definitely helped.

@@alfrede.neuman8611 Absolutely not in this situation. The driver of the GT500 even said this is a poor street surface. Drag radials on a poor street surface will not perform well. That is why I said "will not help on that surface." The AWD will still be at an advantage because all four wheels are gripping on a bad surface. I am very very familiar with drag radials. And the creation of the drag radial was so that a person could go to the strip, drag the car and then drive home all without changing tires. And as far as torque, that GT500 will be laying down nearly 600 lbs/ft to the ground, a bit more than 460. But in the end, I can tell you from real world experience (my garage has a Challenger Hellcat Redeye, a Challenger 1320 and an M8), the M8 with launch control and being AWD, will out launch that car with drag radials on the street. Now at the strip, my Redeye on drag radials, well then, we are talking about a redeye pull.

Helps the GT500 go 11 seconds faster around the VIR track than the M8. The GT500 just has an average launch. It's actually faster 0-150 mph than the M8. Car and driver has the M8 at 15.5 secs and the GT500 at 15.1 secs. I mean you saw the 40 roll in the video didn't ya? They explained the GT500 has a slower 0-60 but eventually catches up. You can see the higher trap speed in the 1/4 mile. The M8 would get roasted in a highway race lol
