There's more headspace on the V8 for upping the power, with Unichip and remap, bigger intercooler etcetera. That said, my 2013 D4-D Hilux achieved a 44% power increase with just a Unichip and DPF delete. It transformed the vehicle. Either way, if you do a Unichip + remap, put in an Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor and guage.

Well to be fair Paul, these days more people drag race and speed in utes rather than people in sports cars, so this is why it’s now common and popular to have ute drag races on many KZbin channels, you’re right these vehicles aren’t designed to be speed demons but people will still flog them off the lights and gun it down the freeway anyway.

Remember the Hilux has better aerodynamics than the 70 series. Drag coefficient of the hilux is roughly 40% greater also the downforce from the windscreen. Are these new 4 cylinder land cruisers going to tun into similar problems that the 2ltr bi turbo ranger has/had. Loaded up that little motor is going to work so much harder and on a high strung engine with weight will it lead to premature failure. Id love to see the 4 cylinder 79 with a round hay bail in the back of it over 12 months in some what hilly terrain. Is the transmission upto it will it hunt gears like the 2ltr ranger?
@shreckm6470
@shreckm6470 4 ай бұрын
The Ranger is a 10 speed that's why it chases gears you drive it in sport when under load. The 4 cylinder hilux motor has always had issues anyway but I think it will be fine in the Cruiser. It's the luck of the draw with all diesels now.

These 4 cylinders have been around for 8 years ,they are in hino 200 series trucks and coaster buses and have been in the prado since 21 . I have had two v8 cruisers from new and both have been great and both done over 350k without a problem. In 21 we bought a new prado and its great, since writing my cruiser off a couple of weeks ago I have just ordered a new 4 cylinder cruiser ute . The prado tows as well as my cruiser did so I don't see a problem with having a 4 cylinder.

V8 has a broader torque curve. The 4 cylinders have more peak power and torque. So from stand start the 4 cylinder rev out 1st and drop into its peak power band going into 2nd and so on. Plus the 4 cylinders are automatic so no time lost during shift.

The V8 is down on torque too.
@mclongkock6678
@mclongkock6678 7 ай бұрын
@d15z1sux it comes in sooner. For example the v8 has 450nm from 1200rpm to 3000rpm, The 2.8 has 500nm from 2000rpm to 3500rpm. The v8 has more torque at lower rpm and peak at 450nm for longer range. The 2.8 only has more torque only from 2000rpm on wards. The 2.8 has to rev and be in its power band to beat the v8. Peak number on power and torque is one thing the other is where it's at and how long it last. Diesel normally don't like to rev high so really that v8 will tow all day at 2000rpm all day long. It's in it peak torque at that rev. Like my 200 series, shell seat at 2000rpm towing up hill all day long sometimes 2600rpm n that's going 110km up a hill pulling a boat.

We think that the weight difference between Hilux and LC79 must be unsprung weight (the front live axle) vs IFS of the Hilux that is more lighter another question: Do you Think 50Kg unsprung weight makes the difference to the hilux get better times? Torque converter can help with up to double the torque on full slip. It would be good to see the 2.8 with the old manual that the 70 series has that would be a fair test. We all know an auto is better in drags. If they have the torque limiting removed that’s as about as fair as you can get. Not bias as I don’t have one but do drive a n80 for work and have driven the others and there’s more to it than just a drag.

Questions would be. What is the final drive and transfer high range gearing on the V8 vs the 4 pots? Also does the V8 use any kind of torque limiting in lower gears. Lots of vehicles do, in 1st/2nd it might be making 50hp less. Which would explain the poor performance off the line, but able to match speeds from a 3rd gear roll. Last question would be aimed at Toyota. What development haven't they done to the V8 to have such a poor power output compared to the 4 pot engines?

Would love to see this again with a modified v8 added to the mix given it’s so undertuned, and the 4 bangers are highly tuned. I’ve owned both so always curious.. also the v8 used less fuel for me.

Toyota manufacturers are just making a mockery with those 2.8 diesel engines those are too expensive in maintenance and they have made a vast majorities of the 2.8 - 4 cylinders to believe that they have changed the world 🌎 to buy that engines- years ago the land cruiser lc 70&79 didn't easily carry the same engines as other various models Toyota vehicles..

Can someone do a comparison on the manual Hilux sr vs a Land Cruiser 70 v8 they are more similar in torque and power. And it will be more apple to apple to see if displacement really comes into play in real world situation. As there’s a saying there’s no replacement for displacement.

if the V8 was an automatic that would have been a hell of a race.. The problem with V8 is gear conversion ratio, automatic is faster when it comes to gear conversion ratio. The Hilux is lighter in weight compared to its counter part, the 4 cylinder Landcruiser.

Given a reasonable curve/delivery, 500Nm should always be faster than 430Nm all else equal. Toyota's truly amazing achievement isn't that the 4 cylinder if faster. It is the mind bending ability to get so little power and torque out of such a large engine. Kinda reminds me of sub 200hp large capacity American pushrod V8s shortly after emission controls came in.

THE THING IS: Bless that 4.5 V8 TD with some tuned ECU software, a 76mm freeflow exhaust, heavy duty clutch and revised 2nd & 5th gear ratios - and that V8 Cruiser becomes a total monster, with 650Nm on the flywheel! (Enough to run alongside some sports cars during a rolling start) And that V8 turbodiesel just sounds soo nice with that exhaust... While a tune 2.8GD6 sounds dull and boring...
@cloudysky9991
@cloudysky9991 7 ай бұрын
Agreed- it’s a shame you have it spend the dough to make it go as it should. Mine easily makes 650nm at the wheels with a towing tune, clutch and exhaust with dpf. If it was a 6 speed auto it would absolutely hammer of the mark😎

should have done a manual hilux so you can see whether its a 4cyl or an auto making all the difference. zero surprise that when you go from 3rd the manual is a ton closer... you're testing gearboxes then talking about motors with basically identical outputs.

Diff ratios in the cruiser vs the hilux will play a huge part in how the power and torque is put to the ground. So it’s still an uneven match.

Why do you change under 4000 rpm on the V8 😂?.. while the other trucks change over 4000rpm . The V8 will be faster if you better changing ratio. The is a reason why from the rolling race the 2.8 was struggling to keep up with the V8 .. to cut the long story short if we had more room the V8 would win. Not just a short route , i hope just hope you noticed how the V8 was slowly catching up with the 2.8. Hilix
