I owned a 2015 WRX, and currently own a Golf R. And while the WRX wasn't the STI, I still found it a dream to drive like its meant to be driven. The Golf R is just as fun, but far easier to live with. I first got the WRX thinking "Yup, this is a perfectly acceptable interior." After 2.5 years of ownership with a 45 minute drive to work each way, I just got tired of the noisy interior and harsh ride. I will hopefully some day be able to go back and get my self one of the older Subarus as more of a play thing, but for the time being, the Golf R makes driving fun and relaxing. In the end the Golf R is far superior then the STI, but I can't knock people who love their STI, its got such a cool (some times stupid) community behind it that makes ownership enjoyable. Plus, every time you see a WRX or STI you just know they are another car person. No non car person would buy one of those 2 cars, same can't be said about the Golf R.

I have owned both these cars. The Golf wins hands down; drag race or track timing. Subaru sounds way way better, looks simply amazing and it feels more rebel like. The golf is a refined piece of machinery. The R's are very quick. The DSG is amazing and yes it truly is a dual clutch (manual) gear box. The paddle shifting is pretty fun and there is none of that "ooops I missed 3rd". It's simply smooth and incredibly fast shifting. I love the 24 mpg in the city in the Golf. I do need some bling on this lil cutie however. I get cut off all the time now. LOL

At 1:19 the STi cluster reads 'S' (the STi ECU is set on low boost). When using the high boost map the cluster will read 'S#'.

I do agree DSG are quicker in drag races for the average drivers, however if you buying a high performance car in auto, you might as well drive it in a video game. These cars are meant for drivers who want to push their driving capabilities whilst having fun, so if you are buying auto you might as well sit at the back and hire a professional driver to drive you.

The dual clutch transmission is not your grandpa's automatic, it's and F1 inspired racing gearbox. It shifts are faster than you and I can blink our eyes, keeping the turbo pressure intact - that's why the R won.

Every review I have read says the STi is incredible car. I have an Audi S4 and purchased an 2016 STi for different reasons. Came out just like all the other Golf R vs. xxx videos. The Golf R is just an absolute beast. It destroys its competitors on a Drag and on the Track. And it does all that while maintaining the best fuel economy, the most luxurious interior and the most comfortable ride. The Design is also the most sophisticated, its a grandmas daily with just the right amount of sportyness at least in my opinion. You could argue that it is boring to drive and i myself as a Manual fan would agree to an extend but i got to admit, that well tuned DSG Box is a thing of beauty.

Chris Brown Yep - exactly. DSG can be tuned to shift gears in 20ms. For all you non literate people that is 1/50th of a second. Not even your favorite super hero can do that. Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, BMW, Audi, Ferrari, and Lamborghini - all are using DSG because it is absolutely the best gear box.

SpacemonkeySTI I had a dual clutch S4 so I get how fast they are...but the point is, if you watch the race the STi goes from being literally in front of the Golf R to behind it when they cut shots...it's just a joke. Edekit Rex As someone who edits short films for a living I can confirm this is most likely the same race. This is not two separate races edited together. If you have a look from 1:26 onwards the Golf is only slightly behind and by 1:29 it's ahead which is entirely feasible since 2 seconds is a long time when dealing with this kind of bhp. Rememeber the camera angle at the start favours the Subaru, it's not actually that far ahead :)

Those Golf R s are quick. A stage 1 tune can take them to 360 / 370 bhp easily. I went up against a few at the 1/4 last weekend and I was impressed. Especially when you can get them in the UK on finance deals so cheaply. Not a fan of the new STI looks but I'd be intrested in having a drive in one. I was a fan of the old Scooby P1.

The SI Drive in the STI was in "S" which is not in the highest setting. The highest SI Drive setting is is "S#". SI Drive controls the throttle response and turbo boost. OK, so, looking at the dash of the STI at 1:18 and how it was set up, they did not utilize the full potential of the Subaru. For starters the DCCD (Driver Controlled Center Differential) was set to auto, where the full-time AWD should have been manually set to send more torque and power to the rear-wheels for a rear-bias set up of 35:65 (front/rear). Second, the drive mode was only set to sport where it should have been set to Sport# for closer gear ratio set up for quicker shifting. And, Third, traction control was not turned off.They drove the STI like a complete novice. I am I the only one that noticed this? Funny to read these comments to see that so many are too ignorant to know anything about the WRX STI's history. This is a Rally-bred sports sedan not your typical street sports car. I loved my last VW...a 2010 two door golf TDi. I was really hoping VW would bring the GTD to us but no. I was talking to the sales manager at the Audi/Subaru dealer in Portland and he took me into the shop and he picked up this huge stack of papers the he could barley lift and told be these were all trouble tickets for the Audis and then he picked up a little folder about a quarter inch thick and said these are the trouble tickets for the Subarus. Now, just go to Portland and it will blow your mind how many Subarus are there. There is just no compairasn in reliability between Subaru and VW/Audi! After that I have been a Subaru man all the way!

putting the STI in S# mode is a completely different car, literally. Redo that race in S#; i don't care who wins, but the race will be a better measure. I drive and STI and my brother drives a Golf R; i've driven both, they are almost the same except the R is very elegant and the STI is rough. (both in every respect)

If I was buying one of these two it would definitely be the Subaru. Simply because the Subaru will last longer without costing you tons of reparation costs. The quality of a VW Is such a letdown these days. Turbocharger fail, DSG failure, huge oil consumption issues and my sympathy for the VW concern just dropped to the ground because of dieselgate....if you cheat on one subject, they might have done more. It's a mentality question, and I believe it's just plain criminal to cheat on a health issue as emission regulations. I don't do business with criminals

Much worse is that VW doesnt solve the problem's in a decent way. My college drives Audi A5 2.0 TSI with an oil consumption issue and the dealer didn't do anything. A letter from lawyer was needed to activate them. I believe they have the instruction to do nothing when people complain, till there is a serious chance that they get sued

What everyone is missing is that the race is with a handicap STi with limited boost. It's like 2 exact cheetah racing one another but one only has three legs. Go to 1:19 seconds into the video and pause it! The car is in "S" mode and not "S#". No doubt the Golf is nice and fast while having good gas mileage, I'm am just saying that it was an unfair fight/race.

you can see it in 1:19 directly over the mileage indicator, subaru is in Sport mode, not Sharp. And the driver revs it to about 6000 rpm. It's AWD but i dont think thats the optimum here either. 4000 should be right. And I bet Golf R is using his launch control

a good driver and it's even, both cars run 4.7, 13.0. I have hit 4.6, 12.9 in my 04 stock StI and 4.7, 13.0 in my 16'. Very few people know how to properly launch an STi

I see the Subaru beat the Golf off the line but it then cuts to a scene where the Golf is ahead of the STI not even a half second later? Doesn't even show how fast its second gear was for both cars. And the camera angles don't even match where the cars are the following scene??? I would rather see the race being shown from two angles at the same time than having it changed in multiple angles because this looks like it was recorded on multiple takes.
