The "pilot" for the TV series was "The Big Human Bomb" (adapted from a 1949 radio script), previewed on December 17, 1951 on "CHESTERFIELD SOUND OFF TIME" {a short-lived Sunday night NBC variety show featuring Bob Hope, Fred Allen and Jerry Lester as rotating hosts}.

When the director says [the suspect] that on camera, he "goes to the dogs", he means that the actor (suspect) looks and gets worse on each take.
