You probably know but Don Adams, AKA Maxwrll Smart, signed up at the age of 17, and served in the Pacific Campaign before being hospitalized for a year before returning to be a Marine drill instructor. Webb also signed up but didn't make it. Then, he was given a hardship waiver to support his mother and grandmother. He was always a strong supporter of the police and military from an early age.

3:15 Now there's Jack Webb's attention to detail that's on display in every Dragnet. The clock in the hotel matches the narration. They say Webb demanded the police department phones used in various scenes had to have the correct extension numbers of actual LAPD divisions on the rotary dials - Robbery & Homicide, Burglary, Auto Theft, Bunco, etc. even though the TV viewer could never actually see them. 😮
