Wow! That scam is beyond savage. You'd have to have no emotional capacity at all to even come up with an idea like that. At least give them working items god damn. That these are true stories makes it even more chilling to think that someone actually employed this scam.

Today it requires a warrant to search an apartment or hotel room but back then the landlord could usually give consent. Maybe they got a warrant here and just left that out.
