Don't know if you figured this out yet but primary slot applies to both the "armor" slot for armor and whatever the primary slot is for weapons. It simply tells you how high the base armor or attack value will be. So when a schematic says [75-90] a component with primary slot:low will give you base armor of 75, and a high one will give you 90. Nice video btw!

Slothkins after you beat Inquisition, you really owe it to yourself to play Origins. Origins may look a little out of date, but it has a great story. It is a lot more reliant on tactical view combat than the real time action of Inquisition, but man if it isn't fantastic! It can still be beaten without entering tactical mode, but it is much harder :D

Just to point out, the primary material does seem to, in some cases, increase the armour value of a piece of gear. This seems to happen only if you use some rarer, higher quality materials though, so there's really no reason to use any specific ones of the lower tier materials other than preferred cosmetics.

I would definitely appreciate a guide to more advanced crafting. Also, it would be a treat to know where to get better schematics later on in the game. I just learned that crafting is actually pretty awesome but all my schematics are woefully underwhelming. Thanks again for doing this!

I played Inquisition when it came out and never bothered with crafting. I just got my own PC copy and now, years later, am thinking of trying it...at least once. Thanks for the helpful information!

If you read carefully in the material information box where it talks about what the material does in each slot, right at the top it will say whether the material is a low/medium/or high armor material. This is what determines your armor value when crating armor. I believe this also applies to the base damage amount for crafted weapons as well.

I can confirm that for light armor the value changes depending on the material. I think it might depend on the design you are working from.

Greetings! Thanks for posting this, it was very helpful. However, I thought I would note that while there is no "Armor Slot" as you mentioned, that falls into the category of "Defense." So whenever you place an item into the armor slot when crafting, you end up getting the perk from the Defense slot, i.e. placing Iron in the top slot for crafting a piece of mail will give you +1% Melee Defense. Just thought I would mention it! Thanks again.

Armor slot or Primary slot, is for required material to make armor PLUS color. So if you prefer a certain look you can keep using that same material.

In my opinion, DA Inquisition is an amazing game. You can play any character you feel like, for example, I play a tempest rogue, but somedays I change it up and equip a bow. And sometimes I switch my character and play as a Mage or a Warrior.

Later on when you find rarer items like dragon items, the utility goes up A LOT. That goes for weapons too. And some of them give added stats %.

Putting different materials in the armour slot can increase the armour rating. Dragon bone, for example, pushes the armour rating past the default upper limit.

I don't know if you fixed the info or not (and can't be asked to read all the comments), but the type of metal you put in the Primary Slot actually affects the amount of Armor Rating you get. You only had Tier 1 metals in your inventory so it always showed 92 Armor Rating. It would've been higher with Tier 2 metals. Hope I am not repeating someone elses post, but I thought it's a pretty useful info that you skipped (not intentionnaly of course). Good guide neverheless.

Here's a little tip for people that can't seem to be able to upgrade something, getting the red 'no upgrade available' message? Although it took me a while, if you hit that little snag, try remove an upgrade from another piece of equipment that you were intending to use and then when you go to upgrade the other item, there should be no red message and you'll be able to continue from there!...Hope it helps

6:30 The "Armor Slot" will increaase the defense based on the level of the material, on this video every ORE you have is lv 1, that's why the value didn't change.

I noticed that when you were crafting with Solas that the Ring Velvet material for the "armor" slot boosted up your armor rating pretty good but you didn't have enough of it to use. I was wondering if you noticed that since that slot didnt seem to do anything with the other characters. I'm still not quite understanding this game though haha. Nice video!

Note the different tiers of materials dictate the armor (or damage) value ... and the different materials also change the color of the final product.

not just color, if you use better crafting material to armor slot (because this is primary slot) you get more armor rating. In this video you have only tier one crafting materials. :-)

The material in main slot also determine what armor rating it will have. Sometimes you hvae item taht says 120-150, and the higher tier the bigger armor it will have. And also it determiínes elemental damage in stave

Did you notice under primary it gives you an armor rating, low, medium, and high. All your materials here are the same low armor rating. The armor goes higher when you use better materials.

The material you use dictates your armor strength, in this case they were all "low armor rating" but that can change. Just thought I'd mention that as it seems like you were confused on it :)

mate the primary slot correspond to the armor rating, the problem is that you only have "tier one" types of materials. you could have more defense with better quality material like bear hide for exemple. The same for the weapons.

u metioned that the material doesn't matter, later on it can as u get tier 2 and 3 materials. the higher grade can increase the armor rating or increase the damage the item does. it really depends on the tier of the material. in this video u had tier 1 materials

Dragonswave1 According to Bioware, all drops from enemies, chests, etc, are random. Check merchants. If no luck, you might just have to wait and get lucky.

that just seems redundant imo... if loot is random then people may not even get anything good by chance. that or what happened with me where i didnt get i single handed sword or shield and had to use swords i didnt like using.

Hey Knetic one question. At 8:30 you were able to equip the crafted component onto your armor. But when I try to do that, it says "the component can only be equipped onto heavy armor", which is exactly what I'm wearing. So I don't understand...

You mean a crafted upgrade? There are separate upgrades for each armor type. If it won't allow you to equip it, then there's some kind of requirement you're not meeting.

Hit "x" to examine that armor and you'll notice that your slots are already full. You'll only be able to upgrade the items with open slots.

I had the same problem , to attach the upgrades go to the black smiths and it should have modify armour then you can equip it from there

there r some armors that u can make, especially tier 1 armors, that have no upgrade slots. that is a mistake i have made several times myself

Question on Weapon Schematics: Why is it that if you craft "Bianca's Arms I" and equip to Bianca, it still shows up as an item to be crafted later(when Varric is the only character who has use for this item)? This would be especially confusing if your renaming the items you craft.

Btw Barrier Damage Bonus applies to Mages Barrier it doesnt mean you can kill barriers faster. Barrier is a trap mages set on the ground you cannot attack them. Otherwise good informational video

I have the quote from Bioware right in my hands saying "Barrier Damage Bonus - Increases the damage against enemies that are under the effect of Barrier". I'm aware it's casted by Mages, and it's a buff, not a trap like their elemental mines.

Barrier is the very first spell in the spirit tree. Its the mage version of guard basically.

I hear you, but in a certain sense, so is a lot of the game and so they matched the crafting system complexity to the rest of the game. Also, its a role-playing which means at least a few things will be complicated

Thats actually the part I like most about this game-it takes so long and is pretty complicated. I was able to get through games like skyrim very quickly on hard dificulties and didnt really lke that but this game is great

some pieces of armour and weapons don't show up in their respective modifying stations. then some which do show up say that there are 'no upgrades available for this item' when i do have some in my inventory. please help!! i need some of these upgrades, since I'm playing on nightmare to get the achievement

Thanks for the video. I do need some more help, though. I've created "Healing Freezing Apprentice Arms" which needs to be attached to light armor. Dorian is wearing "Enchanter Armor" which is a "common light armor" with "empty light arms" and "empty light legs". How do I attach the "Healing Freezing Apprentice Arms" to the "Enchanter Armor"? The "Inventory/Upgrades" keeps telling me "This upgrade can only be attached to light armors." What am I doing wrong?

I have a question about tier 3 armor. On my dalish elf mage i really want the keeper robes dropped by the lvl 23 dragon in EDL. My question is, how inferior is armor with no upgrade slots to armor with upgrade slots?

The part about not being able to compare current equipment with one you intend to upgrade/swap or whatever is something I picked up on fairly quickly and it's now starting to get a little annoying!!..For all the brilliance that this game has, I would have though that the developers/designers could have sorted this out but I guess not!..Love this game!, I even cancelled my World of Warcraft subscription as I hadn't even thought about going back to the game for nearly 2 months because I was pretty much playing Dragon Age Inquisition 10+ hours a day!!

I got a Balance Dagger, I cant craft it for some reason even that I got enough items. what am I missing? I tried to add the dragon bone to get 193 dps but it never worked but when I put onyx in, it worked. There something I'm missing out of all of this.

Plays good on pc with xbox one controller and on my 50 in tv 1080p 60fps p.s. its almost the year 2015 you dont have to play pc games at a desk with a mouse and key board.

So why will it let you attach the weapon upgrade into some weapons but not the others? I crafted grips for my dual wields but all of my weapons say theirs no upgrades for my weapon? It's driving me nuttttsssss
