Dragon Age Inquisition Masterwork Crafting and Gearing Guide!

This guide is going to assume you know nothing at all about crafting, and build you up from the basics to advanced details about what is what, and how to put together a Masterwork equipment!
The most powerful armor and weapons are not going to come easy in Dragon Age Inquisition. And even some of the best pieces of gear you find for loot, still have room for improvement with upgrades to stats and looks!
That's where Masterwork crafting comes in. It gives you the power to create the perfect weapon and armor in the style you want, with the stats you want, and the badass rune effects!
If you haven't figured out by now, almost all gear is random. From the corpse on the ground, to the chest sitting at the bottom of the dungeons. The good news though is that even if RNG hates you, there's always merchants that will sell you weapons, armor, schematics, and crafting materials. It's not top of the line, but it'll help you fill in the gaps in your arsenal if you really want it.
Once you have a schematic you want, it's time to hit the blacksmith area. Four benches: Craft Armor, Craft Weapons and Modify Armor, to Modify Weapons. At the crafting stations, you'll fill in the material slots with items you've scavenged and gathered in your journeys.
Each slot in the schematic represents a type of improvement to stats like Offence and Defense. Using metals, leathers, and cloth bring a wide variety of stat improvements based on the type of armor or weapon, that can boost for example your maximum health or critical hit chance.
Want to take it a step further? Insert a Masterwork material for an added bonus effects. Once your piece is crafted, runes are also a great way to add even more damage! Even if you don't use a masterwork material or have runes to apply, you're still likely to have access to upgrade schematics for your weapons and armor. Handles for your weapons and arm guards can also be crafted at the stations for your armor sets and weapons to provide more ways to customize and add more power to your gear!
When it comes down to getting the best gear for your character, the only limitation is: "How far are you willing to go for it?" I spend hours on farming materials, studying the crafting tables, and analyzing stat combinations to learn how to make gear. This video is the short cut to getting all that info, and on your way to battlefield faster with better gear!

For anyone watching now, who's new to the game, there are a few other places to get fade-touched materials. One of the most sought after materials is Silverite, as it adds 5 Guard on every hit. If you have the Descent dlc, there's a Descent war table mission that's repeatable. It gives Silverite and it also gives fade-touched Silverite, at a ratio of about 1 fade-touched Silverite every other mission. Sometimes it gives 2! The mission can only be accessed at the war table in the 1st Deep Roads camp, not the war table in Skyhold. It can also only be done by Cullen, so make sure he's free. It also requires an area to be opened up and this area is deep within the Descent dlc, so it's not easy access. The mission itself only takes 33 minutes. Thus, after just a few hours play, you should have all you need. If you have the Trespasser dlc and activate 1 or more trials, you will start getting 'special shipments', in a chest in Skyhold. Much of the time these will be random fade-touched materials. The more trials you have active, the more often they will appear. You can also get Masterwork materials from Bonnie, the Orlesian merchant, once she's moved to Skyhold. Just check her stock regularly and she'll occasionally have a Masterwork item. Lastly, for those not averse to using an exploit... chests, loot piles etc. will replenish, as long as you don't completely empty them. Most will replenish randomly but for certain items, including fade-touched materials, they will refill with the item removed. Just remove the fade-touched material, leaving everything else, go to a completely different are/map. Upon return there will be a new piece of fade-touched material, of exactly the same type. Repeat as necessary. It's rare to find fade-touched materials in chests etc, so keep an eye out for them and don't automatically click 'take all', without first checking. You can also do this with tier 3 schematics but it's random which tier 3 schematic you get and most visits there will be either random loot, or nothing at all. Just re-visit regularly and always leave 1 item in the chest/container etc. The best place to do this is the Cradle of Sulevin, as it contains many containers which could generate a tier 3 schematic. Thereby increasing your chances of getting one each visit. Hope all this waffle helps someone. :)

Can u get special shipments without having any trials activated? I havent unlocked Skyhold yet but i keep getting a ! pop up in my house at the special shipment chest at the starting town everytime i return there. It even gets highlighted when u hit search but there havent been anything in it so far.

@@Shiftry87 The icon shows always, when you get a shipment you will see a message to the left of the screen and the icon will be yellow, like quest icon before you mouse over them, and without trials enabled you may get a couple but are scripted and have specific items, for instance I started a playthrough without any trials and after defeating the pride demon when you wake up in your room, I got a shipment with 3 avvar armors, then when I hit lvl 7 I got another shipment with schematics for those same armors, don't know if there are more shipments like that but maybe, for random items and materials tho you need trials enabled

You can farm some of the rifts in frost basin if you haven't cleared them and leave 1 item leave the area repeat if you forgot look at a rift map

Some special features of crafting is the ability to remove class restrictions on armors. Snofleur skin (Leather) and Silverite (Metal) in the primary slot will remove the class restrictions. Mages will be able to wear medium or heavy armors, rogues can go heavy, and warriors can do medium. This is especially good for two handed warriors since medium armors tend to offer more +crit%, +attack%, and +critical damage% than heavy armors.

Fade-touched metals can be picked up from nodes of that same type. Fade-touched cloth is found in loot just like other clothes, and fade-touched leather can probably be found on animals, so you get the blue mats from the same source as the whites.

Just found out I can use the master element to "add 3 guard on hit" to my rogue daggers. Now I have two aoe daggers, one with add 10 stamina and the other with add 3 guard, both are 330 DPs. Currently I activate poison, stealth into twin fangs, flanking move (activates stealth) and then deathblow. This combo generally wrecks about anything I come up against. If it doesn't the poison takes em out and I also have full guard built up. A rogue with guard and assassin spec is unstoppable right now. just my 2 cents.

Someone might have already pointed this out already, but at 10:15 of the video when you're showing the DPS of the 2 handed axe (215 - 273) the only reason why this range hasn't expanded to 289 is because you didn't have all the dragon bone pieces necessary for the weapon. Not because is goes "above and beyond the normal restrictions the weapon should have". Awesome video though man, just wanted to make sure that was pointed out.

I've found fade touched iron two times in home location at very first levels, just after waking up. First time uphill from siege weapons, second hear hut where you need to search for notes for alchemist. A small remark here. When you talk about the materials affecting DPS, you stated that Rare materials can increase the DPS of a weapon beyond what it normally should have. That is wrong. The tooltip stated your axe's damage as 215 - 273 because you do not have enough Dragon Bone to get the 289 DPS. If you do have sufficient Dragon Bane, the tooltip will say 215 - 289. Long story short: the tooltip states the DPS you can get with the materials you have in your possession, and only the materials that you have sufficient amounts of. You didn't have enough Dragon Bone, so it did not count that.

I think a few additions could be made: 1.) Ok, the way i see it DPS is a stat that confuses people. DPS is mainly what you get when you persistently hack and slash at a target with the left mouse button auto attack and it is therefore a severely overrated stat. DPS is Weapon Damage adjusted for swing speed. What you find directly below the DPS stat is the Weapon Damage stat and that stat determines how much damage your weapon will actually do per hit. Now the way I see it, what carries you throught the game are the active skills. All of them, even Whirlwind, have a huge % modifier that scales of Weapon damage. As far as I know their execution animation does not scale with swing speed, and even if that were the case, seeing as they cost the same resources and have the same cooldowns, wether it is a nimble sword or a mighty hammer you wield in your hand, so there seems no incentive to prioritize DPS over Weapon Damage. [Ok ok you got me. If you play a build that relies on executing the standart attack very fast to deal damage - like you have a pincussion fetish or Gathering Storm - you get some more out of the DPS stat. I personaly do not feel that building around those talents is either strong or a lot of fun though.] 2.) It should also be mentioned that with all items you craft, that each 1 piece of iron ore gives a certain Number of DPS in a recipe. The more of that ore the recipe uses, the more powerfull the product will be. This extends to the offense, defense and utility slots too. Provided you have the necessary quantity of an item, the more resource the recipe demands, the more powerfull the crafted item. That however doesnt mean that you should discount what SLOTS the recipe actually offers. I mean, what good would a bow with constition and stagger on hit do a build who has choosen to profit from talents created by critical strikes? Choose wisely. Also some recipes do not produce Items that you can attach Upgrades too. You might want to check into that before klicking that button. 3.) The basic stats and their roles are maybe confusing to some players, so giving a quick guide to help you out with making the right choices seems a good idea: You are a party of 4 with specialized rolles and talents, act like it and plan accordingly. Its cool to give your archer an armor with high melee defense, but he is more likely to pull aggro from a ranged enemy than to be meleed. Include this in your priorities when you chose what materials and upgrades you use. Armor simply subtracts a fixed number from the initial hit. A physical 100 Dmg hit on a 75 armor Target does 25 Dmg. This Damage is then adjusted for melee or ranged defenese. Magic bypasses Armor, thats why there are resistances in the game. Do not focus on those specific boons unless you cant absulutely beat a certain elemental dmg user. Silverite, a rare tier 3 Metal allows you to craft Armor without class restrictions. That allows your mage access to recipies that do not only provide good defenses, but previously not accessible combinations of utility/offense/defense slots. Strength 0.5% Attack (Warrior only) 1% Guard Damage Bonus Dexterity 0.5% Attack (Rogue only) 1% Crit Damage Bonus Magic 0.5% Attack (Mage only) 1% Barrier Damage Bonus Cunning 0.5% Crit Chance 0.5% Range Defense Willpower 0.5% Attack 0.5% Magic Defense Constitution 5 Health 0.5% Melee Defense If I might be so blunt: Disregard the Attributes Strength and Magic. They only provide their respective class with attack power and their 2ndary effects on guard and shield. You have powerfull tools at your disposal that allow you to remove barriers and guard in a flash (Shield Bash and Dispell / Spell Purge come to mind), these bonuses are not worth it, especially when you look at how good the other 3 basic stats are. Fortunately for us dragon age offers quite a lot of possible and creative solutions for builds and party lineup and what Ive said so far might go against what you determine good under those circumstances. But from a cookie cutter Knight Enchanter run of the mill male human inquisitor perspective, this seems like the way to go. Enjoy your epic adventures folks!

They aren’t normal restrictions on the DPS... it simply shows the range of what you can craft with what you can craft... you didn’t have enough Dragon Bone in stock which is why the range was only 215-273 and not to 283

I have many questions. For one. Does putting the "hidden blades" fade-touch material masterwork ability on my staff work when I use spirit blade? I'm running knight enchanter and trying to make the highest dps masterwork staff. I've heard it can proc when I'm using the staff but I've found nothing about it working with knight enchanters spirit blade. Remember the most slots not always best gear, two things to consider when comparing schematics is (1) type of slot compared to what you actually trying to buff and (2) will it take upgrades when completed. Masterwork chances are preset so save before crafting and use low level materials and count how many times it takes before success, then reload and use rubbish until you get to the one you know will succeed. (Can also Identify materials not to use at all) ie if it takes 3 great bear claws then two heartwood before a master work on testing you will know never to use great bear claws and use junk to craft with first heartwood and then use good materials for second heartwood. Seriously consider if masterwork 10% worth it over some of the fade touched abilities, 1-2% on a few stats and 20-30 armor on a backline character not as good as most of abilities you can slot

It's quite difficult to get Great Bear hide until you capture the Emprise Du Lion keep. Then there's a War Room mission you can send Lilliana and she will bring about a half dozen of them each time

I was looking for info on effects from the masterwork items.. Like Fade-Touched Dales Loden Wool gives you: 30% focus gain + 10% chance to drop Caltrops on a hit, doing 70% weapon damage per second .. Does the Caltrops only apply on rogue's or any class? Or only on rogue's who have that skill unlocked? Please clarify

I just crafted a Sturdy Battlemage armor that I crafted entirely out of Dragon and Fade touched materials, and the masterwork material was Fade Touched Silverite that adds 5 guard every time I get hit, I am now the Ultimate Knight Enchanter Tankquisitor!!!

some pieces of armour and weapons don't show up in their respective modifying stations. then some which do show up say that there are 'no upgrades available for this item' when i do have some in my inventory. please help!! i need some of these upgrades, since I'm playing on nightmare to get the achievement

Rogue Crafting Guide: 2 Dragon Bone Daggers with Hidden Blades masterwork on both. Armor with Chain Lightning masterwork. Done. Nothing else matters. Solo the rest of the game.

how did you get upgrade slots for your crafted armor ? I swear, whatever armors i craft, none of them have upgrade slots, so crafting is basically pointless for me..

I know this is an insanely old Post, but I've been looking everywhere to see if anyone manged to get the best heavy armor coat to also Masterwork (would be AC equivalent of 309 plus 10%, or 340). I've tried crafting this armor three times (takes dragon bone) to see if I can get a success, and no dice, even with trying to make other Masterwork armor in between. Want to make my ultimate set for Bull, and not being able to get the Superior coat to Masterwork is frustrating as heck.

I should add that obviously Essence of Perfection will do it, but I really wanted to save that for one of the weapons. I'm on a second playthrough and having the same issue with the maxed-out staff. How many teeth should I have to burn before I statistically get a success. Something's rotten with their efforts to prevent reload and retry.

Some of the masterworks you can choose from say 40% chance of masterwork. What does that mean? I have a few of them and I put one on my bow but nothing seemed to change.

Actually, some items are not random. Equipment drops from dragons are predetermined (the amount of crafting material you get is random though), the loot from the tombs in the Hissing Wastes are pre-set, etc. The loot system is a mixture of RNG in most cases with a number of predetermined drops for certain items.

KineticGTR I thought you said they were completely RNG, sorry if I heard wrong. It just made it sound like there were no predetermined loot. Some unique items or certain schematics will always be found from that certain enemy or in that certain chest. No worries, just a slight nitpick that I thought should be clarified. In most cases, it is RNG, so not much of an issue.

Miketo2000 Even if the loot is predetermined from some chests and enemies the stats on the weapon/armor may vary. even the amounts of a certain stat may vary, such as Cunning +3 or + 5.

dps is misleading sometimes it shows as higher because it takes into account speed its takes the damage and then gos by how many times the character can attack a second it you look at the damage it will always tell the truth

Ok Serious question now: i need a dragons tooth for the Iron bull. So i know i need to find a big dragon but when i find them they either never land so i can engage combat OR fly away when i get close. How can i get one to fight me? And what level should i be? I'm a lvl 13 reaver qunari male by the way.

It depends on the area. Some dragons fly and land in another place and some of them don't. And their levels vary from 12 to 20 I think

One simple correction in case nobody else has pointed it out. The DPS range doesn't include the DPS if you were using Dragon Bone because you don't have enough Dragon Bone to achieve that level of DPS. The DPS range shown represents what you can actually make based on what materials you actually have.

I'm new to DA:I I've only been playing about a month and a half now and I still have two MAJOR Masterworks crafting questions which you never even touched on in this video: 1 - WHEN in the game can I start crafting Masterworks items? 2 - WHAT is the purpose/use for the Masterworks Crafting Items like Dragon Tooth 40% and bear Claw 30% and other such similar categorized items of lesser percentages? 2a - I'm presuming that there is a Masterworks Item Crafting FAILURE possibility based on the percentages listed in Q#2; so, what happens to all of the crafting materials that were attempted to be used when a Masterworks Item Crafting attempt fails?

not expecting a answer but anyone know how to get High DPS for a mage the staffs in the game seem a little low on the dps side i hear it's do to fire mine being so strong but you can only use it every what 30 seconds AND if you don't place it right you may have wasted a turn. I guess what I'm saying is i want to max out my mages DPS what stats should i go for? + To attack% + to magic stat or would the best stat in fact be +% Crit chance if i use flashpoint? (The ability that lets you cast a spell that was on cooldown if it crits)

If you're focusing mainly on DPS, then you need to use dragon materials or the highest quality ones for ice/lightning with a successful dragon tooth masterwork upgrade which will boost the stats by 10% on success. You can then add a spirit rune of tier 1 through tier 3 to add even more DPS. Far as the other stats, that mainly a preference.

I really would like the superb longsword of the dragon schematic, it has cloth as one of its materials, and I like cloth for heal on kill stat. I have that on my mage's staff but I'd like to give my sword n shield warrior something like that and I saw that that has a cloth slot. I'm wondering when I can get the schematic for that.I like to have my warriors have heal on kill to make them even tougher to kill, so far I can only have Iron Bull heal himself with his sword (once I make that weapon again for him). I have the schematic on my mage now but I don't know when she got it, I only checked after I beat the game...and I don't want to go that far just to get it.
