I choose to send him to the Grey Wardens, after Corypheus is dealt with. I don't know if that is the right decision, but I feel like he was meant to be a Warden especially when the real Blackwall conscript him in the first place.

Indeed, and it's feel good than setting him free. I feel like I just grant him a chance to atone for his sins in the past, a chance to redeem himself. I set him on a good path so he can fight for worthy cause to protect the innocents. I figure the Inquisition may not have much use for him after everything is over, and I don't know if I can explain it correctly but I think he was meant to be a Warden, and the real Blackwall must saw something in him. I'm going to choose setting him free option on my other play-through where I romance him though. :)

Very few outside of the wardens is aware the joining exists. If people knew what it was then they would have an even harder time getting recruits. Besides giving him to the wardens in essence is the same thing as he will undergo the joining to become a full fledged warden.

@@jon6car a bit late, i know, but during a conversation afterwords you can find his joining had begun, he was told to gather some dark spawn blood but before it was given to him, the original blackwall died. Not even initiates know what the joining is, let alone outsiders

I chose to send him to the Grey Wardens. I literally had never felt so betrayed by a video game character before, but I couldn't bring myself to completely hate him either. I feel like him actually becoming a Warden is the most honorable choice for all involved.

@@CoratlanAnders’ betrayal was foreshadowed quite strongly throughout the game though. The only thing that surprises us is the magnitude of his attack. With Blackwall, it’s way more sudden and unexpected.

I pardoned him. I ain't naive and I know what he had done back at that massacre. I read the World of Thedas Vol. 2. Think about this way, his worst fear is himself. When was the last time he walks the world as himself? Think about like I'm stripping him naked in front of everyone and do the walk of shame, metaphorical version. I think his conscience already did the job torturing the hell out of him. People may or may not forgive him and will continue to judge him, but that's the point. People will throw shit at him no doubt and will bemoan that he got away from his crimes that easily (but let's face it guys, almost all of DA companions are never squeaky clean in the first place and some of them did and will do worse than what Rainier did), but there are also people who will take time to understand him. In sum, whatever we were before, we are now the Inquisition. If he is the monster he claims to be, then why he is still mulling over not being good? Rainier could have continued the charade, yet he comes clean anyway. Because it is the right thing to do. It really took time for him to get there. This choice becomes more meaningful in Trespasser once the UI switches to Thom Rainier. He finally divests from the Blackwall persona and finally sees the good in himself, the Rainier who messed up so many times, realized it, and changed it even if people will never accept him. In a way, he finally makes peace with himself and conquers his fear. That's real redemption arc here. You don't forgive him, fine. But mocking his attempts to make peace of himself and finally become a better person? You're the problem, not him. On the flipside, giving him to the Wardens, in my own point of view, is a just an easy way out. He either lives in a borrowed time or dies instantly.

My Vashoth mage romanced Blackwall largely *because* she respected him so much for being a Warden, so this was really devastating for her. She ultimately forgave him, but only on the condition that he go through with becoming a Warden for real. The Trespasser stuff for a romanced Warden Rainier was so delightfully bittersweet. I know the Joining is a death sentence in the long term, but I really hope they walk back the ambiguous declaration of death in the epilogue so he can be alive in both Warden and non-Warden forms in DA4. Even if he doesn't show up, just to be someone the Inquisitor could eventually reunite with.

Lol i did the same thing. I didn't do it to spare his guilt or care if he kept being a friend though. He is a useful warrior for my Inky and his skills are needed. My Inky told him she owns him and he'll never be let free of his debt to the inquisition 😂 but i like to RP that its just my Inky being the playful sarcastic bitch she is with everyone rather than being serious about that.

You should really consider retitling a few of your videos and the chosen still as the video image. You've posted a lot of spoilers, and it's not even because someone clicks on the vid. I was lucky I was playing the game when you were uploading so much; I had to avoid my subscription feed and I almost thought about unsubscribing. There are still a lot of people who don't even own Inquisition - to have spoilers right in the title or the still might ruin the game for some people. People who play the game won't need you to explain who Thom is in the title.

I'm sorry about that. :( I corrected the thumbnail (it takes time to update though) and the title in this video, hope it helps. Near DAI release date, some people let me know that they were unsubbing for a while to avoid Inquisition spoilers and I'm fine with that. I try to avoid spoiling stuff but it's hard, and sometimes it's not that obvious what spoiler is and what isn't. Some things that weren't spoilers to me were sometimes spoilers to other people, for instance Morrigan... I mean I thought everyone knew that she was in this game since she appeared in some trailers and wallpapers.

Do you get the war table mission for if you both set him free and make him a warden? Or is it just one or the other, because despite that mission appearing after you set him free invoking the treaties feels like it's related to the warden answer. Also, were the options you chose for all the war table judgement missions the best ones available in terms of maximizing your influence gain?

I will never understand why people didn't like Blackwall but liked Sera. Sera is the single worst character in any video game I've played she is a massive hypocrite and just all around terrible. Blackwall is actually well written and in my opnion the most human character Bioware has ever written. He is the most believable no one is always honorable or always devious at all times.

My poor elf Kiki romanced this guy, and this was devistating to her. He lied, to his own lover. My girl would be holding back tears trying to control herself upon seeing him like this. Trying not to burst out yelling and screaming at him on why did he lie, why did he kill everyone? Then again my elf girl was too much in love with Thorne to let him go. So she just sent him free, to rejoin us, and make up for the errors in his way. She would run up to him, hug him tightly, slap his face, kiss him, and say "Never do this again." I am sorry this tore my poor Kiki up.

By the Maker, I can't stand him. While I thought about leaving him to face public disgrace and severe hopefully deadly punishment, I kept him as a "Warden". He made the Inquisition look weak and easy to manipulate by confessing without our approval which was brave I must admit, but he serves us now, yet he damages our image in the public eye. The Inquisition and the appearance of "The Grey Wardens' support" is more important than his oh so emotional confession or his well-deserved death. So he keeps serving us and shutting the hell up! I'm running an organisation here and not working for this dumb, rueful bastard's salvation.

Obvious spoilers: The man we knew as Blackwall is actually Thomas Rainier. He ordered an attack on a caravan that killed an innocent woman and children and was then wanted to be executed for the crime. Rainier ran away and bumped into (the real) Warden Blackwall who wanted to conscript him into the Grey Wardens. Becoming a Grey Warden kind of gives him partial diplomatic immunity but before he could go through the ritual, they were attacked and Blackwall was killed. Since Rainier didnt undergo the ritual and isnt a Grey Warden + Doesnt have Blackwall to protect him diplomatically, he was a wanted man again. So Rainier grew a beard and pretended to be Warden Blackwall to avoid the law. Hes been living with that lie for years but then they captured an innocent man who ppl thought was Rainier. "Blackwall" couldnt have another innocent person killed bc of him so he revealed himself and admitted he lied about being a warden and has been hiding behind the name of a well respected man. Short story: identity fraud of a dead man

Half the warden have killed and raped more innocents than you can count (well maybe not half but a good part of them, and certainly most of their recruits join only to avoid jail or certain inmediate death)

That is not true. The wardens aren't the Night's Watch. Recruiters go around grabbing people who can be useful for the Blight. Duncan found the most powerful fighter he could. He grabbed a Tourney winner like Ser Jory. They don't seek out the scum of the earth to join the Wardens, they take good fighters even if they have a crooked past. The only reason the Inquisitor can send him to the Wardens is because she is in charge of them. Why on earth would they recruit rapists and murderers who just want to avoid jail but turn away capable people who are blighted and will die if they don't join? I would read up on the wardens if I were you; you have a terribly wrong idea about them. :/

Cptigris125 Him becoming a warden won't bring those kids back he killed. Innocent children. I left him because I didn't need him. He's not "good" it's an act. His approval is easy to earn if you play into that act and try to uphold the ideal. I dislike him, because he deceived me and murdered children. If you think that can be atoned for that's great :) but I'd rather he be punished. I don't need him. If those were my children, I would cut off his head with a dull blade.

Courtney Hancock Neither will just letting him rot. Making him a Warden though can help save future lives however, and it's as much a prison sentence as anything else. And that's preposterous, if it was all an act he wouldn't have confessed like he did or wanted to be punished so heavily. And his being drawn to 'the ideal' actually supports the sentiment that he's genuinely remorseful because he's so drawn to and aspires to that ideal to try and make up for what he's done. It's not like he's some sick freak who WANTS to kill kids, he himself was as much a victim of politics and being used as any of his men. Hey, your choice, they're not my kids though, and they're not the Inquisitor's, I can only make the judgement from that perspective and make the one I think is the best, not great, but the best that can be done. As Cole said, the actual deceased don't care about punishing Blackwall, all they wanted was not to die. Since we can't change that and punishing Blackwall himself is pointless you might as well have him make up for it by preventing future deaths, which he can do with the Wardens as a start. It's a waste, whether you think you need him or not, nobody's gonna benefit in the end if he just sits there. If just making you feel better about it works for you then that's your choice, but I'm gonna play my Inquisitor as trying to do the absolute best that they can, and we'll leave it at that as of agreeing to disagree.

I can't watch other people's play through's without feeling the urge to say his a fake especially when they talk about him so fondly also because it seems like unless you romance him, the story never reveals that his not Blackwall. Which I think is out of order.

Complete both Here Lies the Abyss and Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts. Not to mention talking with Blackwall more often after major quests (especially the conversation about him guilty over being a bystander while a dog's being killed) so that this particular quest will be opened.
