Frieza was and is evil, but he cared for Vegeta (albeit in a twisted way) that he specifically destroyed Planet Vegeta when Vegeta was off it and at one point Zarbon had stated that Vegeta was Frieza's favorite. And of course Goku was the one that defeated Frieza.
