As someone in a family with a generation gap and had a person who kept the entire family together that passed away, I think seeing Bulma's and Goku's families drifting apart is entirely believable. The instant my grandfather passed, my entire family hard fractured and drifted apart. I went from having a ton of aunts, uncles, and cousins to having my mother, and that's it.

Had something similar happen to me, after my parents split a vast majority of my fathers family have had nothing to do with me, my cousins many of whom I played with often back when we were kids don't know anything about me now, the younger ones don't know who I am at all and even on my Mom's side there's a lot of relatives I don't know because after my grandparents moved to another state back when my mom was a teenager the family members they left behind have not had much to do with my mom or uncle in the years since 😢

I never considered the idea that Goku was killed by the Power Ball, but it does make sense. I do like the idea of Goku becoming one with the Dragon Balls as some kind of guardian, particularly given that the whole life that he lived was as a result of Bulma introducing him to the concept of the Dragon Balls in the first place. They gave so much to him and now he's giving back.

When Shenron flies off with Goku, it's the only time in the entire franchise (as far as I'm aware) that we get to see what the end of Shenron's _tail_ actually looks like. We normally never see it due to the glow from the Dragonballs themselves and the fact the tail is still "inside" the balls when summoned.

Another thing I don't like is that the fact that Goku Jr and Vegeta Jr don't know what a Super Saiyan is sucks because it's sorta implied that the Saiyan history was lost to time. You would think that Vegeta would try to preverse the Saiyan history for future generations, but I guess you can blame Trunks and Bra.

While I get the complaints about the Son and Brief family drifting apart, keep in mind that even during Z, the group spent years apart already. Heavily implied if not outright confirmed nobody saw Goku again after he left with Chi Chi after the 23rd BT until he showed up again with his literal four year old son. Then you got the EOZ period where Bulma explicitly states it had been 10 years since they'd met up. With that track record the concept of the two families drifting apart after what you can arguably call the anchor between them leaves forever doesn't really seem too far fetched.

Honestly I don't think the Brief and Son family seperated while Vegeta, Goten, Gohan and Trunks lived. Assuming Goku Jr is the 4th generation, it's probably at the 3rd generation they seperated, since, Pan, the old woman remains the only anchor to the past (assuming Bulla don't make it to old age/cuts ties with Pan for some reason). Also assuming how weak Goku Jr is, it's possible Goku descendants themselves didn't accept Goku's legacy from Pan and possibly died, leaving Goku Jr the only heir she can hope to reinstill Goku's legacy in. TLDR : With our heroes gone there was no one but Pan to carry this Z warrior heritage forward, something she tries to do to Goku Jr

When Toyotaro was writing Dragon Ball AF, he had a explanation for where Goku goes/what happens to him that I thought was really interesting. Goku in a sense becomes Shenlong. He ends up some realm outside the normal Dragon Ball cosmology that Grand Kai refers to as "The Ryu'oshin Realm". It's a place where the different dragons live while they aren't summoned. He retcons the idea that Kami created Shenlong along with the dragon balls, but that Kami created the dragon balls and the stone model to call forth Shenlong from the Ryu'oshin Realm. After the Shadow Dragons are born, the model of Shenlong shatters and he loses his physical connection to our reality, so at the end of the series when Goku is in this weird dead/not dead state, it's actually Goku becoming the new physical vessel for Shenlong. In this Ryu'oshin Realm, each dragon has a palace, so Goku now presides over this palace that has all the Shadow Dragons in it. He hangs out with and trains with them, and even goofs off with some of them (which is really cute). The only other person there is Pikkon, who volunteered to go with Goku to keep him company (which I really like. Goku and Pikkon should be pals).

Which kinda plays into how Toyotaro-san wrote how Dragon Balls work in Super. They're not really mortal creations. It ALSO rather obliquely, but cleverly links with something that Koyama-san wrote into the DB MOVIES.... Earth and Namek are NOT the only places in the Universe with Dragon Balls. Dragon Balls are rare and special, but not unique to Earth or Namek. Thus, it makes sense that it's a universe-wide cosmic force. Which in Super is explicitly said to be DIVINE power being channeled. This raises sooo many questions about HOW Dragon Radar works, but also... how Many Dragon Radar devices did Bulma ever make? Is there more than one?

@@marhawkman303 It's been ages since I've watched any of the DB movies. What movie had a third set of Dragonballs? Unless you're talking about the newer ones like Res F or Super Broly. Haven't watched Super. Anyway, the manga seems to contradicts that notion. After Kid Buu blows up Earth and Vegeta chews Goku out that they've now lost the Dragon Balls and he let their friends die to save Dende and Satan, Old Kai asks why there were Dragonballs on Earth when they're only supposed to be on Namek. He clearly seems to believe that only Namekians can create and use Dragonballs. In regards to the radar, three were created. One Bulma made before the series, one was created using parts from a plane by the Norimaki family in that Dr. Slump crossover after Blue stole the original, and the third was created because Goku took it and seemed to die after challenging the one who killed Krillin, so they needed one of their own to stop Piccolo from getting all of them.

Theres a lot about GT I defend, theres a lot about GT I will criticize. I will die on the hill that GT not only has the best ending of all of dragonball, but it was the most fitting ending for a character across almost the entirety of fiction. From the second Shenlong pops out of the dragonballs without being summoned, to the finishing shot of Goku flying away with his staff, his final words to everyone being happy, cheerful and resilient. Perfect. (Yes I am 100% ignoring the implication that the son family and the briefs apparently have not stuck together). Seeing his best friend of decades feeling down on himself for aging, giving him one last boost of confidence and cheering him up in a way that only Goku would know to do was beautiful to watch. The dragonballs absorbing into Goku coming full circle with the idea that Goku IS dragonball. Trunks looking at the situation and understanding Goku's position, comforting pan in a way that makes sense to what they've just witnessed. FUCK, Vegeta telling pan to hold dearly onto those rags almost instantly makes me cry. He knows that this is the last time he's seeing his best friend. That his memory will live on in all of them. Honestly I could go on for hours just talking about each individual scene and how it plucks on my heart strings but I'm already shedding tears typing this. I fucking love dragonball y'all. I'm so glad that little Heck chose to one day sit infront of a television in 1996 and flicked channels until he saw a cartoon with a man in an orange get up and green alien looking humanoid fighting a long haired asshole who was holding a child hostage. Thank you dragonball GT. For all your faults, you gave me the ending I never knew I wanted, but that I desperately needed.

As someone pointed out, Scott is blaming GT for something that has been there throughout the series. Goku has left for three year stints before tournaments to train or go Dragonball hunting. After defeating Piccolo he went out to build a life with Chichi for five years, to the point they were shocked he had a four year old kid. Post Cell he chose to stay dead for 7 years and didn't check up to the point he didn't even know he had a second son. Heck, in the canon ending after they defeat Buu Bulma says she hadn't seen Goku in 10 years. So Goku not remaining close to his friends and just sticking by family is nothing new.

As a kid. I just thought "Oh the series is over. I enjoyed the show" But looking at it now. Despite GT not being considered Canon. I do think that "This" is how Dragon ball As a whole should end. While it has a few hiccups here and there. The fact that Goku ascends to a place above the mortal realm. While still being present. Fits. Through his journey. Goku traveled vast lands, out of earth. Made friends with people and enemies alike. Saving his friends, family, and the universe as a whole. Just like how his inspiration "Sun Wukong" had to go through his journey. He earned a place in the heavens.

I think the Son and Briefs families growing apart makes a smidge of sense. The core group just grew old and a few no doubt passed on so their kids and grandkids all had less and less connectivity beyond "yeah my great grandma knew her grandad but we lost touch".

It’s always been my theory that Goku made a deal with Shenron when he died from One Star’s attack. One final wish, but at the cost of himself. He’s always been one to accept things as they come, to never fight against the whims of fate. His philosophy has ever been that life is a series of journeys and experiences, and he’s never shied away from anything new. There’s also a bit of a narrative metaphor as well. That even if Dragon Ball ended (and for many years, it did), it’s never truly gone. It lives on in our thoughts. Be it games, specials, fan creations, or just people watching it for the first time decades later. Even though it’s over, it’s never truly gone.

I don't disagree with Kaiser often but I will have to on the drifting apart thing. It's completely understandable that they would all drift apart after some time. There was really only one person keeping these people connected and that was Bulma. Once she died, aside from Goten maybe staying in touch with trunks, the rest of the family don't have a reason to stay in contact. Vegeta sure as heck isn't going to reach out to them. Pan and Bulla didn't seem exactly close at all during GT if they ever even interacted. Pan also might stay in touch with trunks but they weren't exactly besties either. Gohan was closer to the older members but he would have stayed in touch with piccolo more than anyone else. This isn't even the first time it's implied that the Son family doesn't keep in touch with their friends often. The beginning of Z shows that they all haven't spoken in several years. Long enough for Gohan to be born. Even at the end of Z I think it was said that Goku hadn't even seen Bulma and Vegeta in almost 10 years. I think that's just a small part of japanese culture showing through.

I think the reason so many GT fans hate the concepts in Super is because of the way it ruins the GT ending. Goku essentially becomes God. Not a Kaio, but something different and special. His journey isn't over, but his journey with _us_ is... Then BOOM, you get 12 universes with their own destroyer gods, angels, the Omniking, etc, and there's SO MUCH of it that its almost like a parody of how the original Manga slowly introduced higher tiered "God" characters. This was such a great send-off for Goku, and while we knew it wasnt canon to the Manga, to see Super go literally in the most "fk that GT ending" direction it possibly could go, and make 70% of its story about just breaking new power ceilings... it just sucks. Not saying all of Super sucks, but its existence takes away that magic ending that Goku EARNED. Its like "why have him achieve Nirvana when we can just have him FIGHT like he's achieved it (UI)? And thats a bummer

The credits at the end was a special credits covering the whole show of cast and crew on the original broadcast. It was recreated for the release you were watching as the subtitles track. But the regular end credits is just for Episode 64. Also Pan is Goku Jr's GREAT GREAT Grandma so its not just 1 generation its 4 generation gap.

The moment that Goku sleeps on Shenron's back, all the dragon ball go inside his body and then, the last ball, the four star, goes inside him and Goku vanishes broke my heart. It truly felt "the end" on Dragon Ball, and i always loved the idea that Goku become the "guardian" of the Dragon Balls, transcending humanity.

Totally agree on the ending... A little big background here: I'm from Germany... And we didn't get all episodes... We did however get some weird skips... We did get ep 01-37 38 (Giant Baby Monke) is missing Then we got 39 to 45 (weird choice in Germany, but...) 46 and 47 (the fight against Super17!!!!!!) is missing 48-53 is given... After that we only got ep 58 and 64... So I watched the whole thing for the first time, when I was like 25 (3 yrs ago) and I goddamn cried after understandin and seeing everything... This ending is soooooooo f*cking good!

@KaiserNeko Could I tell you about my family for a second? My Mother's Side and my Father's side used to be pretty tight knit. They were good friends, they even dated each other on occasion. (This is where I come from.) They were all like an extended family that they all knew and hung out with and played with... But I didn't know this. In my life these two have been very separate from each other. There's maybe one or two that cross the lines but otherwise, these two families have drifted apart. And that's only within my 30 year lifetime. It's a little sad to see, I agree, but it absolutely does happen for one reason or another. I have a comparable fear whenever my grandmother dies. My Father's side of the family is very large; my grandmother had 10 children and almost all of them have had children and even grandchildren of their own. We get together for family stuff often, and we all know each other very well. But it would not surprise me that it's Grandma keeping everything as tight knit as they are. People from out of state will come to visit Grandma, or they'll try very hard to get Grandma up to their events. And I have this lingering fear that, like Goku and Vegeta's families at the end of GT... we'll all drift apart. And stop knowing each other as much, just because the main connector, in my case Grandma, and in GT's case Goku, isn't there as a metaphorical glue. Unfortunately it happens, and sometimes much sooner than 2 generations. So that's why that fact never bothered me in GT's ending.
