Father of Goku>>> Bardock wasn't a good person. Saiyans weren't good people. The special gave a breath of fresh air from the cliché "good guy protagonist" we usually get in Dragon Ball. I think that's part of the reason that Bardock is a fan favorite. Or was, at least.

Honestly the Psychic Abilities of the Kanassans were the reason Frieza wanted that planet taken over to begin with. The Kanassan who gifted Bardock with the ability to see the future wasn't doing it to bless him with foresight to prevent a cataclysm, he did it to get the last laugh and make Bardock suffer. The visions mainly serve to start a chain reaction of mild paranoia in Bardock that he tries to shrug off until what he sees is flat out starting to happen when he sees that Dodoria and his men killed Bardock's crew, forcing him to accept that his comrades aren't making up some story. The future vision gifted to Bardock gives him the drive to try and save his planet and race (Which also in the process imprints his image into the back of Frieza's mind as justification to his fears of the Super Saiyan legend and why he felt the need to wipe the Saiyans off the face of the galaxy).

Even though Bardock seeing in the future seems unnecessary at first, I still think it paid off. 1. He sees that Goku will avenge him. 2. He knows that his race will get wiped out and cant do anything about it (Like every other race they didnt spare) 3. @@rycalamo2684 That wasn't the kind of person Bardock originally was though. He was a space pirate. End of story. He fought Frieza to try to make a stand for his people sure. Bardock cared about his comrades as well. That makes him a brave man, and a morally grey man, but he was no hero. See, what made the conflict between the Saiyans and Frieza so interesting was that it wasn't Good vs. Evil. It was Gray vs. Black. Bardock never regretted blowing up planets. Ok. Bardock's Psychic Powers: These were not MEANT to be a BLESSING. They were a CURSE -- Bardock, like the people he killed, is CURSED to see the end of himself and his race, and be unable to do ANYTHING about it. And it works perfectly. So.... the Psychic powers are in fact NOT an example of bad writing but in fact of GOOD writing. This is something called tragedy. A character that can see the hand fate has dealt them, and can then struggle against that hand, but can do nothing to stop it. Were they necessary? No. Did they add something to the story? Yes. They made Bardock think he could change things, when otherwise, he may have realized he could not and instead decide to flee the planet or some such. At the very least, they made him face the realization that, much like the people he spent his life killing, his own life, his own struggle, did not matter. Vegeta NOT responding to the destruction of his planet an race is also AMAZING. Because it shows that the event is so traumatic to him that he can not process it. He can not react to it. He knows there is nothing he can do about it. The only thing he can do is BE the embodiment of the Stoic Warrior that a prince of his race SHOULD be. Also not an example of bad writing. Instead an example of good writing. Especially when we consider how moved by pride and a need to avenge his race he is during the Namek and Freeza ark, and then to prove himself, and the SSJ as the universes ultimate power in the Cell Arc. Its clear that it is NOT that Vegeta does not care for his race or his planet, but instead that his only option is to repress his need to act on this emotion, providing a psychological explanation for his other actions and his difficulties with his son in the Cell Saga as well as with emotions and emotional expressions in general, and why after achieving any measure of power, he always refuses, in the future, to accept any indication of his own powerlessness. He is haunted. Bad writing, bad writing is the good guy with the big number punches the bad guy with the bigger number, but the bag guy with the bigger number's power is too big so the good guy with the big number has to get really really really mad so his number will get big enough to be bigger than the bad guy with the big number. Rinse and repeat. Entertaining? Maybe, sometimes it is cathartic even. But good writing, no it is not.

You make an interesting point but I do have to disagree with the final part of your comment. “Good writing” isn’t the basic premise of the story boiled down to a few reductive sentences. If that were true, Sword Art Online would be the greatest story ever told. “Good writing” is how the story flows from point A to point B while fleshing out its characters and world (at least, that’s how I’d describe it). So sure, you might be able to “explain” Dragon Ball by saying good vs evil and good wins, but Star Wars is a simple good vs evil story. In fact, most fiction (especially sci-fi and fantasy) boil down to that main theme. A good example of this is Lord of the Rings. LOTR is not a complicated story when you completely strip it of all its great characters, worlds and plot lines. I’d argue that media like Dragon Ball, LOTR, Star Wars and the like are more character driven stories than they are plot driven. Nobody watches Dragon Ball and expecting, or even wanting, a deep, plot driven story like The Departed or even Pulp Fiction, where the characters, while fun and/or interesting, aren’t what most people remember. They remember the jokes, the one liners, the intersecting plot lines. People remember Dragon Ball because of the emotional moments; Vegeta sacrificing himself after letting himself be taken over by Babidi, both Gohan and Goku transforming through the rage of loss, Piccolo protecting Gohan after training him for a year; there’s a reason why Goku and all the Z Fighters are the cultural touchstones they are.

Let's not forget what drove Bardocks hate for Frieza over the edge. Frieza sends his men to kill Bardock and his team, but Bardock wasn't there, thus he survives? No. Bardock was strong enough to take on Frieza's men, and he knows this. After one of them says "We we're playing around with your team earlier, you should've been there" Bardock replies "You're right, I *should've* been there." (And let's not forget him wiping the blood of his friends on a rag and rapping it around his forehead). He proceeds to woop total ass on these dudes, and survives daduras finishing attack. With his team (his best friends basically) down for the count, he already knows Frieza (the who he already hates) was behind this betrayal, thus strating Bardocks revolution. As he goes back to Planet Vegeta, he's already been getting these visions of his son, someone who is kind and works hard. Before arriving to planet Vegeta he noticed a pod flying past him and he gets a gut feeling he ignores. When arriving the staff tell him that they just sent his son to Planet Earth, thus surprising Bardock but there is not much he can do so he continues. He arrives to tell the other sayians that Frieza is planning on destroying the planet, although no matter how much he begs them, they just laugh at him and tell him he's crazy. Bardock runs out, and now he is left with no one, his team is dead, his race doesn't want to believe him, and his Planet is going to get destroyed. But he gets another vision of his son Goku, where Goku tells him that it isn't too late to be different, and gets a terrorizing vision of Frieza. Bardock shakes his head, and with determination he decides he will have to stand up to Frieza, alone. He dashes off to Frieza's ship with anger and determination, the hundreds of Frieza's men are nothing but obstacles to him and he defeats and flies right past the whole army. After facing off his entire army Bardock gets cocky and throws his strongest blast at Frieza, which turns out pathetic to Frieza's enormous power. Frieza throws his planet buster ki ball at Bardock and Planet Vegeta thus killing the saiyan race. But before Bardock dies he gets one last vision of Goku, facing off Frieza, and Bardock smiles. What a story, and Toryama erases it and decided to make boring dragon Ball minus the cannon story. Everything Bardock was to us, that we looked up to for years, gone...

I know for sure that Toriyama didn't do it intentionally(we all know lol), but Vegeta's psychology and evolution are one of the deepest and most realistic portraits of a child soldier I've ever seen in a shonen manga. Including the complete desensitization towards murder(even of his own comrades), his own feelings and the delusional over-glorification of his race. Plus his behavior during Z, strongly suggest also some form of PTSD. @Evolve Beyond I'd posit that it was less about it being dark than it was about the dramatic/emotional impacts and the culmination of plot threads and character arcs. Stuff like Goku turning SSJ, Gohan's SSJ2 and Vegeta's final explosion were all moments that we had (intentionally or not, cause Toriyama) been building up to over the course of multiple arcs and sagas. Not to say there weren't darker elements in play but those were rarely as prevalent as they were in the specials.

So we, the audience, need something that clearly shows, that somone is stronger than the other. Physical damage or even death is the whole meaning of a fight. A fight creates a story in itself. Because every major blow or injury is progression and creates a new chapter within the fight, that shapes or shifts the narative. Without it, there is no tension and no reason to even care. But the most important thing is: We all know that Dragonball will have a happy end. So the show has to create the illusion, that something terrible might happen to our characters! A fight is always a risk of getting injured or even losing your life. Thats why its thrilling and interesting in the first place. We fear for Goku when hes horribly beaten to shit by Piccolo. We cheer for Goku when hes punching every drip of blood out of Frieza. We are blown away by Gohan defeating Cell with only one arm left. Those moments create reactions like "Oh shit, how is he going to recover from this?!" or "Damn, he really did it, after all he went through?!" Its never been about the transformations, beams or techniques. It was always about what those things could do to their opponents! And it was the key of Dragonball even working. Thats why I couldnt care less for Super. This show never gave me the feeling that ANYONE was in danger. Dragonball Super Broly has characters fighting for hours. And while being gorgeously animated, It was one of the most borring fights in DB Ive ever seen. Ive felt nothing of Brolys strenght, because it wasnt visable to me on Goku nor Vegeta. Dragonball is about people being so strong that they are punching each other through rocks, or blasting each other into space. So of f*cking course we need brutality to some degree, to make it somewhat believable. Otherwise its just as you said.. watching a kid playing with action figures.. And even kids are imagining the battle damage in their heads..

@@prettyboyg1278 yeah the og Broly was good because you could see how much effort they put into beating him. He literally broke the Z warriors to the point that they could barely stand. It made him so much more compelling in that he was the embodiment of pure power. Yeah I totally agree, the story changes for Bardock is NOT an improvement. First Gine, (yay, we finally meet Goku's mom) But she's apparently not a fighter so she's working in a Meat distribution (Saiyan soup kitchen)...um ok, kinda goes against what we were told about how their race is supposed to be built for battle. Then Bardock, instead of trying to avenge his friends and taking a stand against Frieza for his race and for himself as a proud warrior, he instead let's himself die so his son could succeed and surpass him......that's totally not a stereotypical anime father. (disappointing) All I'm saying is I'm just not a fan of these changes, the old version is clearly loved by alot of fans so I say why change a good thing? if you happen to disagree that's perfectly acceptable, there's no need to attack this comment 👍
@CrystalGreymon

In fairness, about the comment regarding Gine just not being a fighter, she's considered a special case. It doesn't stop her from being an extra pair of hands so putting her in the meat distribution keeps her doing something simple but efficient. Her being a rare case is effectively the same for humans that don't want to do something we were built to do. But for the most part I otherwise agree. A character that you're not invested in so much isn't worth watching or reading about.

I don't know why people really even like Gine; she added nothing to the dragonball story, let alone the story she was in. She was just there just so the fans can go: "huh, neat...". Also, she was the start of the concept of saiyans becoming boring. Instead of being a race of battle hungry monsters, they were a story of how goodie boys and girls fought their mean friends, prayed and ended up becoming a god for like 5 minutes just to die; and now the race has more meanie saiyans than good saiyans. Toriyama has been adding lore and changing things that had no reason to be changed since he started Dragonball again with Battle of Gods, and its been bad for the most part...

Despite Bardock being the average Saiyan, he married Gine because he cared enough about her, not so he could have a kid. Plus her design is nice. Sure she lacks a strong personality, but very few characters in Dragon Ball possess much if any depth at all.

Bardock's visions had an important purpose to his character and the story, specially at the end. 1. That alien gave him the ability to see the future as a form of revenge, because he already knew what awaits them, and the fact that Bardock won't be able to stop it. In edition, it was established that these aliens have some weird psychic abilities. so it didn't came out out of nowhere. 2. Throughout the film they made it pretty clear that Bardock doesn't care much for Goku, and even resents him somewhat for being born a low-class warrior. Which is kinda ironic considering that Bardock himself was also born as a low-class warrior. Maybe it's a self loathing thing. And so, as the film goes on, Bardock sees random visions of future Goku as a powerful warrior, fighting against Piccolo, Vegeta, and even Frieza. He doesn't know what to make out of these visions at first, because he still denied the fact that he can see the future. When he realized that Frieza really was planning to destroy their planet, everything clicked, he accepted the fact that the visions are true, and he tried to rebel against Frieza in order to change the future. 3. At the end of the film, when his attempted rebellion failed, he received one last vision before blowing up along with the planet. Now knowing that the visions a genuine, he again sees his son, as a powerful warrior facing Frieza. He smiles with pride. Knowing that Goku will avenge their race. And so Bardock is at peace at the end despite his fate. That psychic alien tried to torment Bardock, but Bardock really was the one who had the last laugh at the end. And most importantly, he went from not caring and even resenting his son to be proud of the man he'll become. That's a really cool story and I really like the future visions idea. They made the story somewhat unique imo. I also found it clever that Bardock only saw Goku's future, because Goku was the only character that actually HAD a future. He saw nothing for himself or his race beyond that explosion. Which hinted that none of them will survive. Great movie. And I agree, that one-shot is pretty bad in comparison.

One thing I loved with the Broly movie was fixing Minus, it not only showed off why Bardock came to the reasoning that Frieza was gonna destroy planet Vegeta, and saying that he's spent his entire life murdering planets, and how he wanted to do one good thing. Not to mention keeping his attack on Frieza the same, which as far as we know had a lot cut from the original 3 hour script

It didn't fix the over all problem at all, for one it still breaks continuity by having Goku being sent to live on earth( which Raditzs knows about) means he would have never gone to earth in the first place. Secondly Frieza knows and remembers who Bardock was both in the anime and manga. He explicitly remembers him in the exact same outfit as his Movie Special outfit with his Blood Bandana. Not to mention it still gives goku Superman's origin for no reason.

I never had a problem with Bardock gaining psychic powers. The way he got them was interesting, and it served a great purpose. He was allowed to see himself through the eyes of the oppressed, instead of the oppressor, and it created a conflict within him. He's a Saiyan... unless you wanna have him get bonked on the head like Goku, there is absolutely no reason he'd ever come to the conclusion that maybe being a killing machine for Frieza isn't the best thing ever. And yes, his friends DID tell him about the betrayal, but all that did was give lyrics to the music that was Bardock's visions, and allow us to see his pain materialized, before it REALLY materializes at the end. Bardock TFoG is my favorite DB movie/special of all-time, and is absolutely still my headcanon. Idc what Toriyama does to take a dump on his own legacy.

Erase the whole “Bardock sends Goku because of the danger” that’s what turns Minus from just a bad story to a malignant tumor for the franchise as a whole because it takes away from the themes of the Saiyan arc and Goku’s character as a whole-not only does it makes Goku too special (the son of the only Saiyan who could make up Freeza’s plan because of plot-convenience) but it also takes the irony that Goku, the earth greatest protector, could’ve been the greatest threat they could’ve faced, but also that Goku prove wrong the race that treated him like trash sended to do a trash job by beating the living shit outta the Saiyan ideal on his own.

Honestly, yeah, you're right. Bardock was much more entertaining as a careless bastard. It was a great contrast with his son's cheerful personality. However, there's a little detail about this video that bugged me. I like to think that there is some variety in Saiyan population. We know next to nothing about them, and I don't really like labelling them as "bad guys". Rather, just an extremely uncivilized and primitive species which was taken over by an intergalactic emperor who saw their potential in destructive behavior and took it to his advantage. They didn't question it because they were all getting something out of it, and Saiyans were still very primitive to get by on their own. There is a lot of potential to create some very interesting Saiyan characters who go beyond their limitations and start questioning the regime they're living under. They're violent by nature, but they clearly started evolving since the very first documented appearance (when they still dressed like cavemen and lived on their original planet). I like to think that they're kinda on the gray moral area, and that there's as much space for brainless tools who follow orders and ruthless lords of destruction, as there is for slightly more evolved, intellectual and individualistic guys. In fact, the lore of the Saiyans fascinates me so much and there's such potential for social commentary there, that limitating them to being the baddies seems like a waste. I understand, in canon we will never know more about Saiyans. However, maybe some fans can write truly brilliant stuff about them with this perspective. I know I want to try!

Word for Word, I've had this same reasoning for why I preferred DBZ Movie Bardock over Minus Bardock with some folks when we were discussing Minus related content and the excuse my friends had in response was, "Pfft dude it's Dragon Ball who gives a shit about the story or character development? just turn your brain off and look at the awesome battles!" Ever since then, I've grown to hate folks who only cared about the battles within a show and literally nothing else. Sure it's the selling point that is easy to make people attracted to it and of course there's always going to be really kickass fights that wind up becoming memorable years later, but there is more to an anime like this than just the battles alone. It's the journey and motivation that leads to those battles that make em all the more awesome. In the case of Bardock: The Father of Goku, his journey was a short lived one where he tried to stop the future from happening in order to protect his own planet. Not as a Heroic Protagonist, but as an Antagonistic Saiyan Warrior.

I appreciated that Goku finally got a mother and I like Gine's design, but the whole 'Goku is literally Superman' bullshit is a massive downgrade from 'he was supposed to conquer Earth but didn't because he hit his head and Grandpa Gohan nursed him into a happy loving boy.' Being a fan of tailed Saiyans in general I watched the Bardock special many times back in the day, so it holds something of a special place in my childhood and remains my favourite piece of Dragon Ball media in general. Many of the tracks from the dub score are etched into my subconscious, particularly the track accompanying the Great Apes on Kanassa and the track accompanying Vegeta being destroyed. With this in mind I must admit I had a bit of a feeling of 'WTF is this shit?' when I saw the Minus scenes in the Broly movie. I'm sincerely hoping that we get an extended version of the film as we did with Battle of Gods, with one or more of the extensions at least attempting to incorporate content from the special into it, even if just a shot or two of Bardock's crew and showing scenes leading up to and including his full stand against Freeza, speech and all.

One has Bardock not caring one fig for his kid (anime special) and the other has Bardock actively trying to save his son. This is one of many differences and most of them are character blocks that serve as a foundation for his whole purpose. One has no desire to protect anything, only to exact revenge, while the other shows compassion.

The point of him getting psychic powers is for him to still be helpless to change anything. Just like the alien he slaughtered without compassion. That alien wanted him to know what it was like to see the future and be completely helpless. Thats why he only saw certain visions. Also towards the end he got to see what goku would become and ultimately he gained comfort in his last moments. "My son lives on". Great line. And you can see that seeing the future actually changed him and made him more compassionate towards his son and his own race. This is called character development and wothout the psychic powers there would be none for bardock. Because he was a savage sayian. Bruh, how could you say that the psychic powers where for no reason. Did you even watch the movie????? Who cares if we see gokus mom that doesnt fucking matter lol. The reiteration was beyond garbage. Good vid minus the physic powers thing.

There are two glaring flaws with your video. !. The canon for Bardock is more a mix of Minus and Father of Goku as shown in the Broly movie. 2. Having love for one's family does NOT make you a good person, there many horrible people IRL that had a soft spot for their families.

1- HOW? The Bardock scenes from the movie were the same as the original chapter... no, even less, since they cut his actual introduction from the chapter, further diminishing his supposed thirst for battle. 2- True, too bad that due to the very fact that we only see him doing that for most of the chapter, 99% of it, that's the impression we are left with.

@@a.liguria2698 Sending Goku to earth itself feels like a plot hole. Realistically even as a great ape Goku had no real chance at take over earth. Multiple fighters like Roshi, Kami and Mercenary Tao would be easy to detect, And each of them alone could one shot Goku if they so choose. In Minus/Broly it makes a lot more sense for Goku to be sent off in secret, Bardock was a scumbag but he always cared, It's the reason he put on the headband, It's the reason he tried to warn the others. Overall the Minus version of events fits a lot better in-universe, It also was never meant to 'replace' father of Goku as a story, It's more of a prequel. As you said yourself Gokus departure wasn't the main focus of Bardocks story, They obvious agree as they chose to seperate the events. It's clear Toriyama is setting up a retcon of the OVA but in the same way that Broly's origin was kept mostly the same, Bardock probably won't be all that different, He still sees his comrades die and he still fights Frieza, Only this time they more closely tie him into the story, They've even foreshadowed that he'll end up tying into the Granolah arc which is cool, It's likely that the aliens of the OVA will be switched with the Cerealians.

Minus is bullshit, THANK YOU. Tbh I never really wondered about Goku's mother or any saiyan "mothers" because I had it in my head that saiyans that came after the Tsufurujin holocaust were all genetically altered test tube baby clones of their "parents"; explaining why saiyan babies are seen in incubators and hatchery environments. Like you said, they're downplaying what the saiyans were (as explained by Raditz, Nappa, Vegeta, ((Turles, Paragas, and Broly), and even Freeza), and to make Bardock be softy...kinda kills the already established mythos. At this point and with everything Super did, Toriyama is just shitting all over the older fans of the series and I hate it, but oh well, I'll give the movie a chance.

You raise several valid points, and I heavily agree. Father of Goku, while not perfect, was definitely more in line with the established canon of Dragon Ball. If Toriyama was thinking of making canon DB- because of the extra fluff, it would've made a much better and well rounded story to remaster that movie, add the scenes with Gine and Baby Raditz, and re-release it. Having said that, and taking a left turn into fan works, have you heard of or read Dragon Ball Multiverse? Because at the moment, that online comic is going through a story using Bardock, Vegeta, Broly, and the Saiyans in general that is *_much_* more in tune with Father of Goku's plot and actually gives a pretty good alternate universe where the future visions actually work to Bardock's and the Saiyans' favor.

@CrystalGreymon
@CrystalGreymon 5 ай бұрын
@@ventuswill2847 Raditz's scouter in Z had a system to ping his location back to the Freeza Force. Nappa's and Vegeta's had them too. They were also bugged with spy equipment to record the audio from their conversations. Basically Freeza prepped his forces when Vegeta got to Earth because conversations during the Saiyan Saga Battle essentially verified that (Goku turning up certainly gave the evidence considering Vegeta heard from Raditz's final transmission that Goku was dead). So with all that cross communication technology, and the ability to gauge a target's power level, scouters are busted for finding someone who is also wearing one. But you're asking about the part where the scouters are used to detect the power level to find them, right? Well, it's simple. If you have just 2-4 low level Saiyans who got away, they go unnoticed. Gine's Power level wasn't anything to write home about. Kakarot's was 2 and Bardock's was significant... but he could likely control it subconsciously. Given where Raditz was, he was fine. So the rest of them escaping to Earth or anywhere else would have solved the issue. If they left their Scouters behind.

I actually think Minus contextualized the Saiyans a little more. We never really got an idea of what Bardock was like in the original manga and I think the movie (DBS:B) had a good line of Bardock stating that all his life he was doing nothing but destroying and for once wants to protect something. For him, it’s preserving that the Saiyan blood lives on, as his hunch that Frieza is up to something starts to unfold. To me, I think Raditz was under the assumption that Goku was sent to Earth to destroy it, as that’s usually the protocol, but he never got the full context of why his parents sent Kakarot there.

For example, we could see vegeta, raditz and nappa on the planet vegeta was on at the end of the special, with raditz asking if they maybe went a little to harsh with vegeta replying "eh, they could've become a problem later, so its best to safe the sorry." and we could see bardock and gine on planet vegeta.

what is a cooler backstory : 1) Your father was a mercenary, a low-class officer leading a small band of savage warriors under the tyraniccal rule of a dictator who terorrized a good portin of the known world, the tyrant decided that your father has outlasted his usefulness and feared his entire tribe might rebel eventually so he decided to genocide them all, your father was no good man for sure, but after starting to see visions, and then seeing his band massacred by the same tyrant he worked for, he was certain of his tribe's doom, he tried to rally the troops in a final stand against their doom but nobody followed him, they were fools or cowards, he had to fend off his planet on his own, in a final stand he slew many of the tyrant's soldiers, but eventually fell to his doom as he wasn't strong enough, he sent you somewhere away to evade this massacre, and now your entire race is dead. 2) your father was a low class scientist, and a part-time mercenary, he decided to send you away all the way across the universe because he felt something is worn, and then your tribe was killed by a monster.
