Actually, in regards to what happened with South Park and Chef, Chefs voice actor actually had had a stroke prior to leaving the show. And what happened was because he was a Scientologist, those around him didn’t like how South Park portrayed them, (while Chef’s voice actor actually took the humor in stride, since they had made fun of Scientology prior to when he left) and so they exploited his condition and recovery by telling Trey Parker and Matt Stone ‘on his behalf’ that he was leaving the show due to hating how they treated Scientology. And never told him they did it. And obviously that lead to the episode where they killed off Chef in one of the most cruel, over the top ways possible, and so Chefs voice actor was left hearing nothing from Trey Parker and Matt Stone as he had to see his character killed off. He unfortunately passed away only a couple years after that stroke. This was confirmed by Trey Parker and Matt Scott when Chefs voice actors son eventually told them about it. It’s actually one of their biggest regrets due to the tragedy of it all. Basically fuck Scientology and their damn cult, they deserve every ounce of mockery they receive.

The guys at TFS decided they wanted arcs for the humor of the recurring characters, where they'd develop in humor at about the same speed they develop in the actual show. Pretty smart writing.

Quick rundown on Bulma: she's Goku's oldest friend - literally the first character we meet after Goku in Dragon Ball, and a few years older than Goku himself. She's the daughter of Dr. Briefs, who is a brilliant scientist and inventor of capsule technology (anything you want, regardless of the size or weight, can be stored in a capsule that fits in the palm of your hand and carried around in your pocket), and CEO of Capsule Corp. Bulma is an accomplished scientist in her own right, having invented the dragon radar. Bulma and her family live at Capsule Corp headquarters and are the wealthiest characters in the show at this point in time. As for personality, as you might imagine for a rich kid, she's spoiled and vain. She's easily frightened and when scared, lashes out angrily at whoever is nearby (including her friends). That said, when she's not freaking out, she is generally rational, kind, and helpful.

Very good analysis by Beth. Humor is also simply a reflex. We only conditionally choose what we laugh about. And we want to laugh because something is horrible in return. That's why humor is always laughing "at something", there is no such thing as light humor. Humor is always "dark" because it is the opposite of crying. But it still belongs together. That's why "horror" and "comedy" is the first thing that was presented on stages. Ages ago.

These videos are the highlight of my weekend these days. And yes, I agree about humour. The moment you start saying "it's okay to make a joke about this, but not about this", then you are setting up someone to be BETTER than someone else. "Yeah, we can make jokes about this person, they're less than. But this person, idea, group, etc is just better. We can't mock them". It's also setting up that individual, group or ideology to have more power than they should. I think there certainly is such a thing as "good taste" and "bad taste", and there is a point where humor crosses into malice. But there's nothing that shouldn't be completely off the table. Fun fact: Although we haven't seen Nail fight, he would absolutely use Vegeta as a chimney brush if Vegeta tried to start one.

The show starts by Bulma litteraly crashing her Car into Goku and those 2 than going on an Adventure to find the Dragon Balls. In DBZ... I mean... she becomes a character again after Namek... until than... she... exists... Don't underestimate Krillin ! He is the 2. strongest Human at this point (If we count Lord Popo as Human)

During this arc and even more so in the actual show Bulma just complains the whole time they're on Namek, everybody else is out there putting their lives on the line while she just chills in the cave (which btw has a whole fully furnished house in there) and whenever they come back to her beaten and bruised all she does is complain that they aren't good enough, so Krilins bitch rant is mostly justified, but don't worry she gets much better next arc after she's given something to do .

One of the things that surprised me the most when I first found out about it as a kid was how short most of the other main cast members are - makes sense in hindsight and the old classic anime trope - main cast is scaled around the main character's height. Goku official height is actually 5ft 9 (175 cm) at his tallest none transformed state and Vegeta is under 5ft 5 (164 cm) by Dragon ball Super but was mean to be about 5ft 3' (160 cm) when he first appeared in the show.

So, let's take stock of just how angry Vegeta was. He screamed so loud, Gohan and Krillin, and probably Bulma, heard him from dozens, if not over a few hundred miles. Then Frieza heard him from probably several hundred miles away. Goku heard Vegeta in his airtight spaceship, which was probably a few hundred *thousand* miles away at the very least, not to mention space is a vacuum that pressure waves, such as those made by sound, can't travel. Next, King Yemma heard him at the Earth's check-in station, presumably located near Earth (relatively and dimensionally speaking), and in the afterlife. And finally, his son, Trunks, heard him, on Earth (light-years away through the vacuum of space I'll remind you), a bit over *twenty years into the future!* He got so angry he broke the laws of physics, time, and the very laws of life and death. RIP Lanipator's vocal cords.

Context for Bulma during this part of the show. All she did was complain about how horrible her life was while all of namek was being slaughtered. You really should watch Dragon Ball Z Kai. It's a shortened version of the original DBZ by the original creators. The seriousness of the show and the situations of the heroes and villains is lost in this fan-made version. There are scenes where many people get really emotional, myself included. It is a really good show. Also, DBZA doesn't finish the series.

Even though it doesn't seem like it, specially in the abridged series, Bulma is actually the second main character after Goku. She kick started the whole of Dragonball when she invented the "Dragon radar" as a teen and went on a quest to find the Dragon Balls, meeting kid Goku on the way (and manipulating him for defense against the wild). Even though she is not a fighter, she is always at the center of almost every plot. Figuring out solutions and inventing stuff to assist Goku. She is characterized as being a "genius", she is almost like a female Tony Stark who doesn't fight.

Bulma was arguably the most important character in original DB besides Goku. For the first story arc, she's more the main character than he is. It starts with her journey to find the dragonballs, and Goku is just the goofy, super strong, comedy relief monkey kid she meets along the way. The rant was less about her as a character and more about how she got shafted story-wise on Namek. The show didn't really establish that it was mainly following Goku until the second story arc, when it stopped being pure adventure and started being a mix of adventure and martial arts.

The Vegeta scream is one of my favorite jokes in DBZA, hilarious!!! Everything should be made fun of, though for specifically dark topics it has to be actually funny and in the right kind of place and time. I remember watching one youtuber react to horrifying vocaloid songs and he was making fun of one part in the Secrets of Wysteria (specifically him focusing on the ass word from the letter reading), it really wasn't the right time for a joke and what he said wasn't funny at all to begin with either (plus he didn't seem to be paying attention which was also aggravating). It's one of the few videos I've ever hit the dislike button on, and I actually love dark humor, like I find Ghost Stories hilarious.

To give you a measure of Bulma's bitchdom: When 11-year-old Goku met Bulma in the very first episode of the original Dragonball (not Z), she shot him in the face. She's a great character though, and generally liked by the fans. It's kinda funny because the author Akira Toriyama takes a pretty carefree approach to writing, yet somehow Bulma is more likable than the typical poorly written female characters you find in a lot of other anime.

Ooohhh.... That Vegeta's rage shout had a MASSIVE spoiler in it, wonder if you caught it or not. Kinda hope not as you're really not supposed to know that small, but significant bit just yet. Also a small nuance on the Chef and South Park incident. Apparently Isaac Hayes did not resign on his own will, but rather it was the church of Scientology that forced him to, which is more than plausible considering how that group functions.

I agree the bitch rant was a bit over the top because we haven't seen that from her as much in abridged as the actual anime, I like how Kenny thought of it as Krillin being able to lash out at someone weaker than him for once lol. Dragon Ball has had issues giving women much to do in the show, I still love Bulma she's an amazing scientist I just wish he had more technology from her or that Akira didn't forget Launch lol.

Honestly, I can see why Krillin snapped. In context of the show when they got to Namek Bulma couldn't really do much but every time she's on screen during this season all she did was complaint which this arc is over 25 episodes long. It got really annoying when she's complaining how bored and scared she is every time they cut to her when the 5 year old is in a life and death struggle vs Dodoria or someone. That and Bulma really does bitch a lot. That's something constant throughout the original Dragon Ball. She's pretty self centered and bratty although that slowly changes as she grows up.

To be fair to Kirllin over his rant at Bulma, Bulma was kind of an annoyance(both in the anime proper and the abridged); she was obviously scared and in over her head, but she was very ungrateful and spiteful to Krillin and to a lesser extent Gohan. I will grant that she did not know they'd be contending with someone even King Kai was crapping his pants over, but still, they needed to get the Dragon Balls to revive their dead friends. Vegeta was 100% hellbent on MURDERING Gohan in the Ocean dub. He was SOOOO PIISSED XD I love how the over exaggerate his intense anger by making it reach the afterlife and the future. I am loving these reactions both because I get to revisit the abridged series, but also because these reactions are fantastic. XD Happy early Spoopyween!

Glad you are enjoying the reactions! We just haven’t seen much of Bulma so the joke felt out of place since we don’t know the original 🤗 only thing we’ve really seen her do is get left constantly and then get grossed out from Krillin, um, “decorating” the cave 😂🤢

Two of the original team four star members are currently going through the series doing a commentary, and they’ve already mentioned turning Krillin into an asshole as kind of a crutch during these early episodes a couple of times. It gets turned down pretty soon, as they continued to grow as creators.

I feel like Krillin ranting towards Bulma was mainly because she was blaming him for losing their dragon ball to Vegeta when in reality, both of them could do nothing to stop Vegeta from taking it. So Krillin, who was already terrified from the Vegeta encounter, hit his limit from Bulma blaming him when she too did nothing so he began his insult rant. I don’t blame him but I do think he went on way too long with insulting her. One insult would have been enough honestly. This is only in abridged though

thank you for those statements on comedy. modern society takes everything too seriously and acts like sensitive topics or certain people aren't allowed because those jokes seem "mean" or "bullying" as if the world hasn't been making fun of everything for decades. how is comedy supposed to evole and become larger if people are just gonna complain and try to push their agenda of what they find funny or not funny onto other people just because they might end up apart of a joke at some point.

I wasn't a fan of Krillin's rant either, it's one of those in-jokes on the original. Bulma in the original series was surprisingly useless on Namek when she was super helpful in almost every other arc. She didn't contribute much and mainly moaned, but that applies to the original series, in the abridged they cut a lot of the fat, but now it seems like Krillin goes crazy for no reason.

She still has done a fair bit of bitching and moaning though. Like complaining about "being abandoned" whenever Krillin and Gohan would leave to do something important for the mission (the reason they're there), and in general just gives Krillin a lot of crap (especially in the abridged), even before going to Namek (like "If anything happens to me, I am kicking Krillin's ass." and stuff like that). So, that's where the rant is coming from. Out of all the characters, she seems the most in a bad mood/attitude. Even moreso than Vegeta, which is saying something. But having seen the original, DBZA is exaggerating the bitchiness, even if they did trim a lot of the fat. Bulma wasn't _that_ mean in the original.

A lot of the jokes they did with Bulma in this season aged very poorly. The issue is both the early internet context that these creators grew their humor out of and the fact that Bulma actually does VERY little in this arc; they have one more off-joke around her next episode, and then after that they ignore her for most of the arc. Next arc she gets a lot better.
