Akira Toriyama did confirm the whole bit with #17 and #18's real names, and after watching Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, the bit with #16 was also confirmed as well as a surprise pic of #21 (whose only canon in the games after Dragon Ball FighterZ) being another of part of Gero's life. I'm not gonna spoil anything else, I'll let y'all discover all the rest yourselves by either watching this episode of seeing that movie for confirmation.

The bit about 17&18 being named Lapis and Lazulli, and 16 being based on Gero's son, is never mentioned in DBZ and comes from supplemental material, that's why Krillin asks if he's making it up. Later, Team Four Star /Animated a New Sequence!/ showcasing 16 talking to Gero as Dad back during the events of Dragonball. It's simple and brief, but keep your eyes out for it, because it's pretty cool that TFS added to continuity like that.

Fun Fact about the android vs cyborg thing: It is a joke as the english dub called them Androids. Japanese and German dubs for example do call them Cyborgs. Their names in german are also C16, C17, C18 etc instead of Nr. 16-18.

@@wakkaseta8351 Nah you're thinking of the direct meaning of the English translation, but the Japanese words aren't as cleanly defined as the words we have in English and is more of an umbrella term, and cyborgs, androids and bio androids all fit under jinzou ningen. The jinzou part can be even taken as just generally man-made or modified, and the ningen part isn't just humans, it can be read as humanoids, people or mortals too.

The androids' names were never given in the original. It was added in by TFS through an information book I believe that stated those as their names. That's why after Trunks staes that on the blueprint, Krillin asks if he made that up.

So, for some context, the reason why Cell is actively seeking out towns and drinking people is that he gains the power level of anything he absorbs. The average earthling has a power level of 5 as seen from the farmer in the beginning of the series. So considering towns have an average of 10,000 to 100,000 citizens, he can get anywhere from 50,000 to 500,000 power levels added to his base for evert town he absorbs. That is the a power level of a ginyu force member or up to half the power of freiza's first form added for every town, much less the cities that have populations of millions. Not to mention what he just absorbed from piccolo, who is currently stronger than a super saiyan. So he is constantly gaining more power to add to his already considerable strength.

I feel like the absorption has to be a spirit bomb or fusion level power up rather than just additive. You have to consider Goku and Frieza were over 150 million on namek, and have only continued to grow, so cell would need to absorb a TON of towns to reach that point and beyond.

@Eno Yaka Goku was that strong because his base form was being boosted by his super saiyan form. Cell has his own weird version of super saiyan, due to being partly saiyan, so I imagine every point of power he gets added to his base form makes his fighting one much stronger.

Knew I had to hop on this one immediately. I look forward to your reaction to the ending, as I'm typing this before watching. Yep, that was satisfying. Ken's wide-eyed stare and Bethany's look of disgust were so great. Scott Frerichs said that this is one of his favorite scenes, if for no other reason than it being so completely different from anything they've ever done before (or after, for that matter). His best has yet to come, but I will gladly state that Abridged Cell is my favorite villain of all time, across all mediums. Also, there is a shirt of Vegeta's "I Am The Hype" available on SharkRobot if you want it.

The joke about the Androids names and #16 being Gero's son being made up is because none of that was established in 1992 when these episodes aired. A couple of years ago Toriyama just decided "Oh yeah he's a robot version of Gero's son and #17 and #18 have real names. Also Gero had a hot wife who's also an android."

I was dying by the end of the episode. I figure you had to mute/lower the volume for copyright reasons, but that made the following segment more comedic to me. Hearing the "I'll be right in" line and seeing your faces shift from intrigued attentiveness to deep concern and horror was far too funny. But I also gotta give credit where it's due because seeing people get drained was horrifying enough but HEARING it after seeing what it's like is just as horrifying, if not worse. They made it sound particularly gruesome there.

The horror is very deliberate to get it home that he is in fact, the bad guy, because when arc hits the fan, Cell hits so hard he quite literally breaks the meta and 4th wall so hard that it leaked over in the official material ala Beerus. (you'll meet him much later)

So how did Gero get Frieza's DNA? That bug the he used to spy on them was destroyed in the battle with the Saiyans. And he couldn't have got it from when Trunks killed him. Trunks was very thorough with killing both him and his father. If he knew Frieza was there he'd know about the Super Saiyan transformation.

when we were kids, we kinda imagined goofy names for a higher SSJ transformation as well, so I felt targeted by Tien as well when I first heard those lines

This is also a good time to point out why the flow of DB episodes feels weird some time. DB characters move massively faster than the speed of sound, constantly. They can fight and "talk" with Ki ridiculous speed, that isnt always obvious to the viewer. Ever since the beginning of DB, when even Yammcha was fighting the Saibaman, Yammcha was moving so fast that no one could follow the fight with their eyes. Piccolo used it as a teaching moment to show Gohan how to "see" with Ki. An 30 minute episode can cannonically take place in just a couple of seconds due to this, as seen in the freiza saga where "5 minutes" was hours to the viewer as the show is from the fighters perspective. So Cell is running through towns Quicksilver style drinking people in seconds, which is why so many of the cloths are just sitting in chairs or cars in the like. Most didn't even have time to react, except for when he purposely showed himself, which is why the abandoned cities look so unnatural.

​@@kenbocole1460 Yeah it's not on purpose, in Dragonball's case. DBZ was supposed to end with the Frieza saga, but it was making a ton of money so Toriyama was forced to write two other sagas on the fly with no plan. For example, #17 and #18 exist because #19 and #20 didn't look cool enough and fans thought it was stupid the villains of the arc were a robotic old man and a porcelain doll. Point being, its fine to enjoy it, but all the plot holes and lazy storytelling isn't by design.

If you thought DBZA Cell was terrifying, you should see the original Cell. Unlike Abridged Cell, he doesn't tell any jokes/have any funny lines, he just comes off as more disturbing and horrific.
