I really love Android 16 speech in this and how it's less about "unleash your hidden power" like in the original and more about the dangers of the rigid pacifism when you need to act. Yes, violence isn't a good way to solve problems but standing on the sidelines and doing nothing to stop sth evil because "violence isn't the answer" is not what you should do, because like 16 said, you're simply letting the evil triumph. It's a lesson that Gohan needed to learn.

I mean... the one thing bothering me with #16' speech is that it kind of seems it never applied to Gohan until the last 15 minutes? Gohan never had a problem fighting when there was no other option - he didn't *like* it, but he'd do it nonetheless. He never had any problem jumping into the fray against way stronger enemies during previous arcs. But here it kind of feels the writers changed Gohan's character in order to justify the speech.

This episode right here. THIS episode is a glorious monument to why people love Team Four Star. Did they cut out some of the nonsense? Absolutely. Did they add funny jokes? Again, the answer is yes. But they also kept the emotional moments and the dramatic tension that this scene required. They KNOW when to make a joke and when to play the scene straight. And I love it.
@MindCaged2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree. I almost think they might have done it better and more epic than the original, they certainly made Gohan more badass. And that 16 speech was better too. Heck, it even made Mr.Satan better. He was rightly terrified, horrifically ridiculously outclassed, and he was still brave enough to help when he was called upon. He might be considered a joke compared to the other characters, but he's still capable of true courage.

The song at the end, over Gohan's transformation was performed by Lawrence Simpson, aka MasakoX, who voices Goku and Gohan in Abridged. Also, yes, there were Linkin Park references: Gohan says "I'm just one step closer to the edge, and I'm about to...", to which Cell interrupts "Everything you say to me... is pissing me off", both lines referencing the song One Step Closer. Soon after, Cell says "And in the end, it didn't even matter", a line from In the End, a song used many times for Anime Music Videos with footage from this fight.

The ending of part 1 is one of the most masterful I've seen in any media. The fact that they manage to bring up so much emotion in a parody is incredible, jokes are generally really bad at keeping the tone consistent enough for the emotions to build up that high (the MCU knows something about that xD). It works in part because they don't hesitate to just keep a scene of someone standing there and transforming for literally 1 minute and 40 seconds, almost 10% of the whole video just for this scene with no joke and no action. I also like how for once, the reaction shots that DBZ is famous for using as ridiculous filler actually serve the scene in this case. Of course a lot of the credit definitely goes to the original soundtrack that they remixed here, it's perfect for this scene. The animators who got the idea for the tears going upside were also genius here cause that part was not in the manga. And it's not even nostalgia for the original japanese music, I've read but not watched DBZ before watching this so I did not know the song.
@ArnoSchmidt2210 ай бұрын
I'm a 35-year-old man who doesn't cry a lot, but this brings me to tears every time I watch it. DBZA is, as far as I'm concerned, DBZ's ultimate dub, although unofficial. It came into my life at a time I was struggling with depression and it helped so much I couldn't begin to describe. Never laughed so hard at anything, especially during the "Freezer" saga. This moment is emotional to me for a lot of reasons, firstly because I was already emotionally attached to DBZA and the hiatus made the hype that even greater. Secondly, this was actually what got me into DBZ when I was 12, Goku's and then Gohan's fight against Cell was the first thing I watched, and I got instantly hooked. But then I started growing up and the low quality Brazilian dub started sounding dumber and dumber to me (I'm from Brazil), and, having the privilege of the Internet since I was a kid, I learned English and decided to watch the FUNimation Dub, which is far superior to the Brazilian one, and watched the entirety of DBZ on it. That fact made finding DBZA even better, because someone who never watched the Funimation dub would never get many of the jokes.

to be fair this was also a classic case of there being no alternative. as the saying goes (and 16 referenced this) all it takes for evil to flourish is for good people to do nothing. gohan was the good person doing nothing. is his mentality understandable? absolutely, as you said, hes 11. nobody should be put in a position like that, much less a child. but he was the only person able to stop cell, and cell was not willing to be talked down, or stopped by any other means. basically, violence is never a good solution, but sometimes all the alternatives are worse, and its simply a case of the least bad option available to you.

But on top of all of that, it has a deep respect for moments in the original that were serious, somber, or downright cool. Gohan SSJ2, Goku SSJ, Vegeta's final flash, Trunks finding Gohan dead, and so many others. The comedy always makes room for moments that deserve it. And from all the details you talked about in this scene to the way the actors tribute the dub VAs, it's so obvious that a lot of thought and care goes into it.

The music, editing, writing, voice over work and much more was done to perfection, you could tell they were real fans and wanted to do "right" as they say to DBZ and thier adbridged series, you could tell when watching it this was the ending that they wanted for thier series. And I can still say to this day, I think it's the best transformation scene ever to be done in anything Dragon Ball related, though the ultra instinct transformation was amazing as well and Gohans "new" transformation was something else in DBS Super Hero. You were not kidding about Gohan being your favorite character. You are going OFF on this man. To be fair, this is also probably my favorite version of Gohan as well. :) Edit: You're also spot on about seeing so many transformation of Gohan transforming for the first time and how GOOD this one is. I actually still get tears forming just from how amazing they did it. I also kinda like the angle they spun with Cell and 16 calling him a coward instead of kinda beating around the bush. I mean, the original has 16 basically telling Gohan that it's okay to fight and kill evil people, but this version really hammers it home: Being a pacifist in a situation where people are being slaughtered by a villain does not make you a good person, it only makes you a coward. I think that's sorta the exact speech that Gohan needed to hear to not only control his power, but also keep it going. I'd be willing to bet the reason he kept losing his incredible power was because his pacifist nature would take over. He'd snap, and then he'd think, "Oh man, what I'm doing is violent and bad," but 16 has just finished explaining to him that he needs to fight now. Really cool moment in the original, but even cooler in Abridged in my opinion.

Oh yeah, Melon, we ALL still turn into kids when Gohan goes Super Saiyan 2. :D Even in my 40s, it still hits me the same.

Same here. I cried and I'm a 31 year old.man 😂 I brought me back to when I saw it as a kid and how intense that moment was for me as a 4th grader

Honestly, Yamcha probably could join the "done literally nothing wrong" club here.

The year wait was so worth it for this episode, where it pivots from silly parody to beautiful homage.

1 thing I thought about with 16 and gohan. In the original, there were a few filler episodes after piccolo kidnapped gohan where gohan meets a little robot. They both get trapped in a cave and the robot sacrifices itself so gohan can get out and live. Not only is it filler, but I think most people either don't know about it or forgot. But I think 16 being a robot and gohan seeing his sacrifice brought back that memory on top of everything else.

Abridged is a comedy parody of Dragon Ball Z with the storyline preserved. But even in parody, this Gohan transformation gives you goosebumps. Those who watched it during the premiere had to wait a year for the 60th episode. Do you know what the pain was?

If anyone is interested, Jonathon Young has an awesome cover of Unmei no Hi (Day of Fate). You can find it on TeamFourStar's channel. I'm going to continue crying now. See you all in part 2!

There's a couple of things that absolutely deserve all the praise in the world in this episode: 1) They way Team Four Star was capable of making sense in a serious way of the way they uniquely characterized the DBZ characters in their parody version. Yes, all those little crazy things about Goku, Gohan and the rest of the gang were mostly for comedic effect and giggles at first, but with time they come to give a unique DBZA meaning to the actions of the characters. It makes DBZA more than just a parody, but in a way a real alternative take of the DBZ story. 2) The performances of Remix (the voice of 16) and MasakoX (the voice of Goku AND Gohan). Remix for the amazing 16 speech that was also wonderfully written and so well tailored on the DBZA characterization of Gohan. Masako for the transformation moment. That scream was great. He nailed it. I remember there's a video of a convention where they first showed this episode with a live crowd watching it alongside them ant they gave him a standing ovation for it. Well deserved. Maybe this is the best episode overall. But Part 2 and 3 don't disappoint either.

You have one the best reactions to the epic climax I've seen on the tubes. Loved your raw emotion and how all-in you were in the moment, and your commentary of the whole thing after. GOOD JOB!

The big reveal of this part is that Goku has been more aware of his and everyone's situation than we all think. There was a slight hint before, in the time chamber, but here he just outright admits his basically a genius -all be it a bit sociopathic- obsessed with fighting to the point that he devised an entire plan to make Gohan get absurdly strong

Fun fact: the Cell Juniors are all (except Vegeta Jr Jr) named after Cell's voice actors: Norio Wakamoto (original Japanese VA), Dameon Clarke (Funimation dub), Travis Willingham (several video games), Dale Wilson (Ocean dub), Johnathan Cook (DBGT: Final Bout), and Curtis "Takahata101" Arnott (TFS). And yeah, uh.. I tear up every single time I see Gohan transform in this episode. I genuinely agree, I think their version takes all the best aspects of the official versions and becomes the ultimate version of the scene.
