I really love how Goku was kind but not naive. He *knew* that a monster like Frieza wouldn't go down defeated, and he counterattacked with only a single hand. I think that the heat of the blast really depends on how intense it is meant to be. In other words, the more BOWER put into a ki blast, the hotter it is. And since the blasts can be touched, it is obviously a physical object. So maybe ki blasts are just explosive hot, spheres of energy.
